Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which song does the name of Neil Young appear in the lyrics?

Answer: Sweet Home Alabama

In the Lynyrd Skynyrd song "Sweet Home Alabama", they sang, in reply to lyrics contained within Neil Young's "Southern Man":

"Well, I heard Mister Young sing about her,
Well I heard ol' Neil put her down,
Well I hope Neil Young will remember,
A southern man don't need him around anyhow"

They seemed...less than happy with him!
2. Which song features the name of Marilyn Manson in the lyrics?

Answer: You Get What You Give

The New Radicals song "You Get What You Give" says (rather unforgivingly):

"Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson,
Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson,
You're all fakes run to your mansions..."
3. In which song does the name of Steve McQueen appear in the lyrics?

Answer: Moviestar

A little-known hitmaker in the mid-70's, Harpo's song "Moviestar" contained the lyrics:

"You feel like Steve McQueen when you're driving in your car,
And you look like James Bond when you're smoking your cigar,
It's so bizarre, You think you are a new kind of James Dean,
But the only thing I've ever seen of you,
Was a commercial spot on the screen".
4. Which song features the name of James Dean in the lyrics?

Answer: Rock On

David Essex sung:

"Still looking for that blue jean baby queen,
Prettiest girl I've ever seen,
See her shake on the movie screen,
Jimmy Dean, James Dean rock on"

It was used as a McDonald's commercial in the country where I live...sigh!
5. In which song does the name of Aretha Franklin appear in the lyrics?

Answer: Hey Nineteen

One of a string of hits for Steely Dan, "Hey Nineteen" contains:

"Hey Nineteen, That's 'Retha Franklin,
She don't remember the Queen of Soul,
It's hard times befallen, The sole survivors,
She thinks I'm crazy, But I'm just growing old".
6. Which song features the name of Lauren Bacall in the lyrics?

Answer: Key Largo

Bertie Higgins had a hit with "Key Largo" in the 70's. In part, it said:

"We had it all,
Just like Bogie and Bacall,
Starring in our old late late show,
Sailing away to Key Largo".
7. This is a question with a difference. Which one of the following songs does not mention The Beatles?

Answer: Garden Party

"Garden Party" was Ricky Nelson's last hit and contains the lyric "Yoko brought her walrus". However, it does not mention The Beatles per se. Three Dog Night's "Never Been to Spain" contains the lyrics "I've never been to England but I kind of like the Beatles". Mott The Hoople's "All the Young Dudes" has the lyrics "and my brother's back at home with his Beatles and his Stones, never got enough of that revolution stuff". "London Calling" by The Clash has the line "Don't look to us, phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust".
8. Which of the following artists does not get mentioned in "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A."?

Answer: Elvis Presley

In John Mellencamp's tribute to 60's American Rock, the following eight artists or groups get mentioned:

"There was Frankie Lyman-Bobby Fuller-Mitch Ryder (They were Rockin'),
Jackie Wilson-Shangra-las-Young Rascals (They were Rockin'),
Spotlight on Martha Reeves, Let's don't forget James Brown".

Elvis did not get a look in.
9. Another question with a difference. Which of the following Nazis did not get a mention in Mel Brooks' spoof "To Be Or Not To Be (The Hitler Rap)"?

Answer: Albert Speer

Albert Speer, the Third Reich Architect, does not get mentioned. As for the others:

"So I said to Martin Bohrmann,
I said Hey Marty, why don't we throw a little Nazi Party?"

and

"Let's not forget ol' Himmler and Hesse,
You better believe we made a hell of a mess".
10. I enjoyed doing The Beatles at Question 7 so much I am featuring them again! Which of the following songs do not mention The Beatles?

Answer: Ballrooms of Mars

"Ballrooms of Mars" by T Rex contains the line "John Lennon knows your name and I've seen his", but makes no specific mention of The Beatles as such. "The Seeker" by The Who states: "I asked Bobby Dylan, I asked the Beatles". The Bad Company song "Shooting Star" says "Johnny was a schoolboy when he heard his first Beatles song". "Life in A Northern Town" by Dream Academy has lyrics that say "In winter 1963, it felt like the world would freeze, with John F. Kennedy and the Beatles".
