Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What sort of building completes this well-known 60s classic?: "Stopped into a ______ I passed along the way"

Answer: Church

From the Mamas and Papas' hit song "California Dreaming":

"Stopped into a church
I passed along the way
Well, I got down on my knees
And I pretend to pray"
2. The missing word here is something undesirable, what would that be?: "Little old lady got ______ late last night"

Answer: Mutilated

From the late Warren Zevon, his most well-known song, but by no means his best:

"If you hear him howling around your kitchen door
Better not let him in
Little old lady got mutilated late last night
Werewolves of London again"
3. This missing word here is a location, can you guess what type?: "When you're standing at the ______ And don't know which path to choose"

Answer: Crossroads

From the beautiful love song "I'll Stand By You" by Ohioan band, the Pretenders:

"When you're standing at the crossroads
And don't know which path to choose
Let me come along
Cause even if you're wrong
I'll stand by you"
4. What completes this well known 80s song?: "Walked out this morning, don't believe what I saw ______ bottles washed up on the shore"

Answer: Hundred billion

The Police sang "Message In A Bottle":

"Walked out this morning, don't believe what I saw
Hundred billion bottles washed up on the shore
Seems I'm not alone at being alone
Hundred billion castaways, looking for a home"

And as you can see, they were not at all prone to over-exaggeration!
5. What fauna completes this duet song?: "Everybody have you heard He's gonna buy me a ______"

Answer: Mockingbird

Carly Simon and James Taylor sang duet on "Mockingbird":

"Everybody have you heard
He's gonna buy me a mockingbird
And if that mockingbird don't sing
He's gonna buy me a diamond ring"
6. The missing word from this 70s tune needs your input, but what is it?: "No ______, no sleep, no light, no sound"

Answer: Cigarettes

By the early-70s brand of Hollies, "The Air That I Breathe" was somewhat of a departure from their lighter 60s pop sound:

"If I could make a wish I think I'd pass
Can't think of anything I need
No cigarettes, no sleep, no light, no sound
Nothing to eat, no books to read"
7. Which profession is needed to complete this lyric?: "The ______ spoke up She said leave this one alone She could tell right away That I was bad to the bone"

Answer: Head nurse

George Thorogood tells the truth in "Bad To The Bone":

"On the day I was born
The nurses all gathered 'round
And they gazed in wide wonder
At the joy they had found
The head nurse spoke up
She said leave this one alone
She could tell right away
That I was bad to the bone"

Hmmm! Send it back from whence it came then. Easy!
8. A year in the future is required to complete this Zager and Evans tune. What year would that be?: "In the year ______ Your arms are hanging limp at your sides"

Answer: 5555

Zager and Evans sang the cheery, yet in the same breath, depressing ditty "In The Year 2525":

"In the year 5555
Your arms are hanging limp at your sides
Your legs got nothing to do
Some machine's doing that for you"

Please note the answer is correct. Although the song is entitled "In the year 2525" this line is only used in the opening and closing verses. The second and subsequent verses, progress through 3535 to 6565. Instead, however, of 7575, the duo sing 7510, and that pattern continues with 8510 and 9510.

One can only assume this was for two reasons. Firstly, to break the song up a bit and stop it from sounding too repetitive. I suspect the real reason is that they ran out of things to rhyme with 'five'!
9. What colour completes the following lyric?: "We got a lotta little Teenage ______ eyed groupies Who'll do anything we say"

Answer: Blue

From "Cover Of The Rolling Stone" by Dr Hook & The Medicine Show:

"We got a lotta little
Teenage blue eyed groupies
Who'll do anything we say"

Oooh! Lucky Dr Hook!
10. What is the missing word from this early 80s duet?: "So you've had a little trouble in town Now you're keeping some ______ down"

Answer: Demon

Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty teamed up in the 80s to release "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around":

"So you've had a little trouble in town
Now you're keeping some demon down
Stop draggin' my
Stop draggin' my
Stop draggin' my heart around"
11. Can you identify the city that completes this Right Said Fred tune?: "And I'm too sexy for Milan Too sexy for Milan ______ and Japan"

Answer: New York

According to Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy":

"I'm too sexy for my shirt
Too sexy for my shirt
So sexy it hurts
And I'm too sexy for Milan
Too sexy for Milan
New York and Japan"

Hmmm, the jury is still out on that one, fellas!
12. The missing word from this lyric is also the name of a group, can you deduce which one?: "You are the dancing queen Young and ______, only seventeen"

Answer: Sweet

A little bit of Abba:

"You are the dancing queen
Young and sweet, only seventeen"

The only part of these lyrics that ever applied to me was that I was once seventeen!
13. What word completes this 70s lyric?: "Well, all my friends are getting _____ Yes, they're all growing old"

Answer: Married

Skyhooks made this observation in the 70s about growing up, in "All My Friends Are Getting Married":

"Well, all my friends are getting _____
Yes, they're all growing gold
They're all staying home on the weekend
They're all doing what they're told"

The wrinkles, age and divorce may well follow!
14. Can you pick the cold lyrics that are missing?: "I want to live in an igloo And fish from an ______"

Answer: Ice hole

By Cat Stevens, it is intriguing, given the lyrics below, that song is in fact called "I Want To Live In A Wigwam"!

"I want to live in an igloo
I want to live in an igloo
I want to live in an igloo
And fish from an ice hole"
15. The Beatles are missing a word here, can you complete it for them?: "A ______ impression of his wife which he ate And donated to the National Trust"

Answer: Soap

To end off, a bit of classic psychedelia from the Beatles, in "Happiness Is A Warm Gun":

"The man in the crowd with the multicoloured mirrors
On his hobnail boots
Lying with his eyes while his hands are busy working overtime
A soap impression of his wife which he ate
And donated to the National Trust"
