Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What song is this taken from? "Some things are better left unsaid I'm gonna spend my days in bed"

Answer: Love Is Like Oxygen

The Sweet sang:

"Some things are better left unsaid
I'm gonna spend my days in bed
I'll walk the streets at night
To be hidden by the city lights tonight

Love is like oxygen
You get too much, you get too high
Not enough and you're gonna die
Love gets you high"

There is something very deep in that chorus, it is so true...

"Love Is All Around" was a 60s hit for The Troggs, which was covered in the 90s by Wet Wet Wet. "Love Is A Battlefield" was an 80s release for Pat Benetar and Roxy Music had a 70s hit with "Love Is The Drug".
2. What song are these words from? "Take a black cat and sit it on your shoulder"

Answer: Ride A White Swan

From the wonderfully addled minds of Marc Bolan and T-Rex:

"Catch a bright star and a place it on your fore-head
Say a few spells and baby, there you go
Take a black cat and sit it on your shoulder
And in the morning you'll know all you know, oh

Wear a tall hat like a druid in the old days
Wear a tall hat and a tatooed gown
Ride a white swan like the people of the Beltane
Wear your hair long, babe you can't go wrong"

Donovan sang "Jennifer Juniper", a 60s song. "Lay Down" is perhaps Melanie's best known song, along with "Brand New Key" and Abracadabra was an 80s release for the Steve Miller Band.
3. What song do these lyrics belong to? "Like a queen in days of old"

Answer: She's A Rainbow

"She's A Rainbow" was recorded by the Rolling Stones:

"Have you seen her all in gold?
Like a queen in days of old
She shoots her colors all around
Like a sunset going down
Have you seen a lady fairer?

She comes in colors everywhere
She combs her hair
She's like a rainbow"

According to www.songfacts.com: "John, Paul, George and Ringo sing the "la-la-la" background vocal on this song. Additionally, the tune was used by Apple in commercials for their colorful IMac computers".

"She's A Woman" was the B-side to the Beatles' "I Feel Fine". "She's A Fool" was a 60s release for Leslie Gore and "She's A Lady" was a 70s smash for Tom Jones.
4. Where can we find this prose? "The sight of you leaves me weak"

Answer: Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You

The Four Seasons sung:

"Pardon the way that I stare
There's nothing else to compare
The sight of you leaves me weak
There are no words left to speak
But if you feel like I feel
Please let me know that it's real
You're just too good to be true
Can't take my eyes off of you"

Frankie Valli also appears in this song list as the solo artist on the 70s release of "My Eyes Adored You". Ultravox released the apocalyptic "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes" in the 80s and "I Only Have Eyes For You" was put out by the Flamingos in the 60s.
5. What song is this from? "Their tears left me cold as a stone"

Answer: Fooled Around And Fell In Love

The opening lines to Elvin Bishop's hit 70s tune:

"I must have been through about a million girls
I'd love 'em and I'd leave 'em alone
I didn't care how much they cried, no sir
Their tears left me cold as a stone

But then I fooled around and fell in love
I fooled around and fell in love
Since I met you baby
I fooled around and fell in love
I fooled around and fell in love"

That'll teach him! The Rolling Stones sung the slow-moving "Fool To Cry" in the late 70s and "Fool In The Rain" was a 70s album track by Led Zeppelin. "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)" was a big hit for Styx, also in the 70s.
6. And where would we find this? "We've got to get together sooner or later because the revolution's here"

Answer: Something In The Air

Thunderclap Newman (a group, not a person) sang the following:

"Call out the instigator because there's something in the air
We've got to get together sooner or later because the revolution's here"

According to www.songfacts.com: "Thunderclap Newman were a UK rock group formed by Jazz pianist Andy "Thunderclap" Newman, singer/drummer John "Speedy" Keen and 16-year-old guitarist Jimmy McCulloch. Pete Townshend (of the Who) discovered them". Jimmy McCulloch went onto becaome a member of Wings.

"Something Is Happening" is a track by Herman's Hermits. "Something Stupid" was a lovely father and daughter duet between Frank and Nancy Sinatra and "Something So Strong" was an 80s release for Crowded House.
7. What song contains this? "Now you always say That you want to be free"

Answer: Time Is On My Side

The Rolling Stones sang, in the 60s:

"Now you always say
That you want to be free
But you'll come running back (said you would baby)
You'll come running back (I said so many times before)
You'll come running back to me

Oh, time is on my side, yes it is
Time is on my side, yes it is"

"Time Warp" is performed by the members of the cast of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and "Time In A Bottle" is a 70s Jim Croce song. "Time Of The Season" was released by the Zombies in the 60s and was revived in the first Austin Powers movie.
8. In which song do the following two numbers appear: 13 and 31?

Answer: Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)

The Offspring sing:

"Now he's getting a tattoo yeah, he's getting ink done
He asked for a 13, but they drew a 31
Friends say he's trying too hard and he's not quite hip
But in his own mind he's the, he's the dopest trick"

The 13 and 31 line still makes me laugh. "Pretty Flamingo" is a memorable 60s tune from Manfred Mann, and "Pretty Vacant" is perhaps one of the songs for which the Sex Pistols are best known. "Pretty Woman" is a Roy Orbison release and was used in the movie of the same name starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere.
9. In what song do the words "Cardboard Box" appear?

Answer: Run Like Hell

In a line that makes me glad I am not dating any more, Pink Floyd warn:

"And if you're taking your girlfriend out tonight
You better park the car well out of sight
Cos' if they catch you in the back seat
Trying to pick her locks
They're gonna send you back to mother
In a cardboard box
You better run"

Speaking of locks, the car doors sound like a good place to start! "Run Run Away" was one of Slade's latter musical contributions in the 80s, whilst "Run Joey Run" was what David Geddes was singing in the decade previous. "Runaway Boys" was a 70s hit for the Stray Cats.
10. How about this, where would you find it? "You should have departed before he got started"

Answer: Dear Eloise

The Hollies sung, way back in the 60s:

"You rushed in blindly, he treated you kindly
Until he found out what he could get from you
You should have departed before he got started
Now you've been burned just like I said you would"

Poor Eloise! As for the other tracks, "Dear Prudence" was a Beatles track from the White Album. John Prine sings (or talks, depending on one's point of view!) "Dear Abby", and Eminem raps his way through "Dear Mama".
