Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the band Styx formerly known as?

Answer: TW4

This band was formed in Chicago in the 1960's and never recorded an l.p. They were an excellent cover band and performed all over the Chicago area in church basements, etc. Personnel were John Curulewski on guitar, Dennis DeYoung on vocals and accordion, Tom Nardini on guitar, Chuck Panozzo on bass, John Panozzo on drums and, later, James Young on guitar.
2. What was the band Black Oak Arkansas formerly known as?

Answer: Knowbody Else

This band was formed in 1963 out of Black Oak, Arkansas. They put out one self titled l.p. in 1969 which is quite rare. Personnel consisted of Harvey Jett ( Burley ) on guitar, organ and vocals, Pat Daugherty on bass and vocals, Rick Reynolds on twelve string guitar and vocals, Artis Brewer ( J.R. ) on guitar and vocals, Sam Schattenberg on drums and James ( Jim Dandy ) Mangrum on lead vocals.
3. What was the band Cheap Trick formerly known as?

Answer: Fuse

This l.p. is smoking hard rock and was released in 1970. It was self titled. They were from the Chicago area. They were originally known as Grim Reaper. Personnel consisted of Chip Greenman on drums, Craig Meyers on lead guitar, Rick Nielsen on keys and guitar, Tom Peterson on bass and Joe Sundberg on vocals.
4. Deep Purple evolved out of which band?

Answer: Roundabout

To my knowledge, this band never put out an l.p. They were formed in the U.K. in 1967. Personnel consisted of Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Bobby Clark on drums, Chris Curtis on vocals, Dave Curtis on vocals, Jon Lord on keys, Ian Pace on drums, Rod Evans on vocals and Nick Simper on bass. Chris Curtis came from Searchers, Jon Lord from The Artwoods, Ritchie Blackmore from The Outlaws, Ian Pace from The Maze, Rod Evans from the Maze ( He later went on to Captain Beyond. ) Nick Simper came from Johnny Kidd And The Pirates and Screaming Lord Sutch.
5. Glen Frey of the Eagles was formerly with which band?

Answer: Longbranch Pennywhistle

This band was formed in L.A. in 1969 and put out one self titled l.p. that same year. They were a duo consisting of Glenn Frey on guitar, vocals and keys and John David Souther on guitar and vocals. Ry Cooder played guitar on one track.
6. Don Henley of the Eagles was formerly with which band?

Answer: Shiloh

This band put out one self titled l.p. in 1969, which is the year they formed in L.A., I believe. Personnel consisted of Don Henley on drums and vocals, Michael Bowden on bass, Richard Bowden on guitar, Jim Ed Norman on guitar and keys and Al Perkins on steel guitar.
7. What was the band Black Sabbath formerly known as?

Answer: Earth

They never recorded as this band but I have a video of them with Ozzy singing Blue Suede Shoes! They started out in Birmingham, England in 1967 as a blues band called Polka Tulk but soon changed their name to Earth. By then they were playing a sort of jazz - blues fusion and toured the U.K. and Europe. Personnel consisted of former schoolmates Geezer ( Terry ) Butler on bass, Tony Iommi on guitar, Ozzy Osbourne on vocals and Bill Ward on drums.
8. Billy Joel was once a hard rocker with which two man band?

Answer: Attila

These guys were a two man band out of the U.S. and put out one hard rockin' l.p. in 1970, self titled. Billy Joel does so well with his keyboard that at first it's hard to notice there is no guitar! The other band member was Jon Small who played drums.
9. Phil Collins of Genesis was formerly with which band?

Answer: Flaming Youth

This band was formed in 1969 out of the U.K. and had only one l.p. which unfortunately was not very good. Personnel consisted of Ronnie Caryl on bass, Brian Chatten on keys, Phil Collins on drums and Gordon Smith on guitar. They were originally known as Hickory.
10. Lemmy, formerly of Hawkwind and Motorhead, was once with which band?

Answer: Sam Gopal

In my opinion, this is the best l.p. Lemmy ever performed on. It was titled "Escalator" and released in 1969 in the U.K. where the band originated. Personnel consisted of Roger D'Elia on guitars, Phil Duke on bass, Sam Gopal on tablas and percussion and Ian ( Lemmy ) Willis on vocals and guitars.
