Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Deborah Harry and Chris Stein started a rock band in the mid-1970s and named it Angel and the Snake. Fortunately, they later changed the name. What did they rename their band?

Answer: Blondie

New Wave and punk music were the favored sounds of the mid-1970s and early 1980s. These musical influences helped shape the sound of Blondie. The group's hit single "Call Me" was nominated for a Grammy. It became the theme song for the 1980 film "American Gigolo." Blondie was also very good at infusing its own music with other musical styles such as reggae and rap.
2. The members of this band really were from California. First formed in 1961, their music reflected the carefree, sun-and-surf lifestyle of the Golden State. The original band members consisted of brothers Brian, Carl, and Mike, cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. At first they called themselves Carl and the Passions. We know them by what name?

Answer: The Beach Boys

Anyone old enough to remember or just fans of the Beach Boys music will recall the hit songs "Good Vibrations" and "Surfin' USA." The Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. Interestingly, country crooner Glen Campbell at one time sang with the Beach Boys.
3. Believe it or not, this singing duo originally called themselves Tom and Jerry. They became known by a different name. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was a monster hit for them. Who were they?

Answer: Simon & Garfunkel

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were one of the most popular singing duos of the 1960s. Their music was featured in the movie "The Graduate." For me the poetic lyrics to many of their songs are as meaningful as the music itself. Due to creative differences, the duo officially broke up in 1970 but have occasionally reunited over the years to inspire other generations with their music.

In 1990, Simon & Garfunkel were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
4. From Detroit, Michigan, Motown Records produced this successful female singing group who got their start way back in 1959. In those days they were known as the Primettes. By what name do we remember them today?

Answer: The Supremes

Diana Ross, Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, and Betty McGlown were the original Primettes. Over the years, as members of the group left and were replaced, the Primettes underwent name changes as well. Berry Gordy, the president of Motown Records, renamed the group Diana Ross and the Supremes in 1967.

When Diana Ross herself left to pursue a solo career in 1970, the group became known as the Supremes. They officially disbanded in 1977.
5. It's hard to believe that this rock band, popular during the late 1960s and early 1970s, first called themselves the Blue Velvets. They were also briefly known as the Golliwogs. With songs like "Bad Moon Rising" and "Proud Mary," the band later changed its name to what?

Answer: Creedence Clearwater Revival

Like the Beach Boys, the founding members were also from California. The band consisted of brothers John and Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook, and Doug Clifford. When the band broke up in 1972,the Fogerty brothers both went on to pursue solo careers while Stu and Doug joined other bands. CCR was one of the many bands that performed at Woodstock.
6. This British heavy metal band, one of the most successful in rock music history, went through several name changes before they settled on the name for which they become famous. Do the names Polka Tulk or Earth ring any bells? How about the songs "Paranoid" and "Iron Man?" Name this band.

Answer: Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath formed in 1969 and enjoyed an amazingly successful career during the 1970s. Lead singer, Ozzy Osbourne, left the band in 1979 and went on to pursue a solo career. The remaining band members continued on as Black Sabbath, having replaced Ozzy with a member from the band Rainbow. Besides Osbourne, band members have included Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi, and Ronnie James Dio.
7. Before singer/songwriter John Phillips added his wife and another female vocalist to his newly formed band, he and his partner, Denny, were part of a group called the New Journeymen. Later, after adding the two female vocalists, the group renamed themselves. By what name were they later known?

Answer: The Mamas & The Papas

Though The Mamas & The Papas were popular for only a few years, they produced numerous number one hits. The wife that John added to the band, Michelle Phillips, went on to become an actress. Cass Elliot, the other female vocalist, died of a heart attack at age 32. Denny Doherty, the second "Papa," went on to do voice-overs.
8. They were the Quarrymen and sometimes Johnny and the Moondogs. By the time these four lads from Liverpool came to the U.S. their name had changed. Who did they become?

Answer: The Beatles

The Beatles originally included John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best. Stuart Sutcliffe left the group in 1961 and drummer Pete Best was replaced by Ringo Starr in 1962. When the Beatles came to the U.S. in early 1964, they unwittingly set off that phenomenon known as the British Invasion.
9. They were first known as the Elgins until Berry Gordy changed their name. If you know my girl and you ain't too proud to beg, then perhaps you'll know the name by which the Elgins became more famously known.

Answer: The Temptations

Like the Supremes, another Motown group, the Temptations came from Detroit. What set the Temptations apart was the capability of each vocalist in the group to sing lead. Dressing in flashy clothes didn't hurt either. The group started out in the early 1960s with Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Eddie Kendricks, Elbridge Bryant, and Paul Williams. In 1968, the Temptations joined Diana Ross and the Supremes to sing the hit song "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me."
10. If I were to mention the names Caesar and Cleo, you might think I was talking about someone's pets. It's actually the name of a married vocal duo popular in the 1960s and 1970s. Of course they didn't stay Caesar and Cleo. The duo changed their name to what?

Answer: Sonny & Cher

Cher met Sonny when she was only sixteen. Their attraction was immediate. Sonny was already working for a record producer and, through her relationship with Sonny, Cher became a back-up singer. When the duo recorded their first hit, "Baby Don't Go," they were on their way to success.

In 1971 the "Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour" debuted. Their acrimonious divorce in 1975 put an end to all things Sonny and Cher.
