Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who performed this song with the following lyrics? "That keeps me searchin' for a heart of gold....(and I'm gettin' old)"?

Answer: Neil Young

This is from his fourth solo album released in February of 1972. Yes, all three - Crosby, Stills, and Nash - contributed vocal back up on the recording, but not on that particular track. That album, "Harvest", reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and eventually became the best-selling album of 1972 in America. The song, indeed, was titled "Heart of Gold".
2. Who had a hit with a song that includes the line "Owner of a lonely heart..."?

Answer: Yes

After an unusual hiatus in their recordings, it was released on their album "90125" in November 1983. Yes was always a very progressive band expanding, The line is the title of the song. This was a different sound from previous recordings. You might consider this a Yes or no question. (groan)
3. Who recorded the track with the words "Don't go breakin' my heart...."?

Answer: Kiki Dee and Elton John

I realize that listing the credits in reverse order might have thrown a few of you off the trail, or at least gave you pause to consider. Heartless, aren't I? Yet again, those lyrics were the title of the song. This was a 1976 hit single written by Bernie Taupin and Elton John under the pseudonyms "Ann Orson" and "Carte Blanche" with an admitted nod to the Motown style.

It did wind up as number two on the Billboard Hot 100 charts for the year.
4. What band released a mostly instrumental with the most of the vocals intoning "Set the controls for the heart of the sun..."?

Answer: Pink Floyd

I had a bit of fun with this one as all the wrong answers have a "fruity" theme. This music first appeared on the band's second album "A Saucer Full Of Secrets" in 1968 and had a sound as eerie as the title of that album, in my own humble opinion. Again, those words are the title of the song as well.
5. What solo artist had a hit with a song with the following line "My heart will go on..."?

Answer: Celine Dion

Known as the love theme from the movie "Titanic", the composition is credited to James Horner, while its lyrics were written by Will Jennings. It was on Dion's fifth English-language studio album, "Let's Talk About Love" (1997), and became one of the best selling singles of all time. Obviously, the song's title is recognizable to most folks.
6. What crooner is instantly recognizable for singing the lyrics "I left my heart in San Francisco..."?

Answer: Tony Bennett

Written in the fall of 1953 in Brooklyn, NY by the team of George Cory and Douglass Cross, this is the signature song of Mr. Bennett. Again, those words are
also the title of the song.
7. What very popular group had an early cut which features the lyrics "But she'll never break, never break, never break, never break...This heart of stone..."?

Answer: The Rolling Stones

Originally issued only as a single in 1964, the song shows up in compilation albums "The Rolling Stones, Now!" and "Out Of Our Heads" (both early and late 1965). It peaked on the U.S. Billboard Top 100 chart at position 19. "Heart Of Stone" is the name of the tune.
8. What R&B/Soul group had a hit with a song that contained these lyrics: "This old heart of mine been broke a thousand times..."?

Answer: The Isley Brothers

Although covered many, many times, the Isley Brothers created this well-beloved song. Released on the relatively short-lived Motown subsidiary label, Tamla (one of Stevie Wonder's contracted recording labels), in 1966, The tune made it to number 12 on the Billboard Top 100 chart for that year. The title is shortened to "This Old Heart Of Mine".
9. Who performed the album cut with the line "Go on...Take it! Take another little piece of my Heart..."?

Answer: Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin

Originally written by Jerry Ragovoy and Bert Berns, and originally recorded by Erma Franklin (Aretha's sister) in 1967, Janis and her bandmates had a much bigger hit with it the following year, releasing it on their album "Cheap Thrills", well known for the distinctive cover provided by underground comic artist R. Crumb. Title of the song, "Piece Of My Heart".
10. Now, down to the core. Which recording artist(s) scored a winner with a song using the following line: "I've been trying to get down to the heart of the matter..."?

Answer: Don Henley

Released in 1989 on his third solo effort "The End of Innocence", it peaked at number 21 on the U.S. Billboard Top 100 chart. "Heart Of The Matter" is the title.
