Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Foo Fighters started as a one man project by the previous drummer of the very famous Seattle based grunge band, Nirvana. Who is this man?

Answer: Dave Grohl

Dave Grohl was the drummer with Nirvana and wrote songs while he was with them but didn't share them with the rest of the band. After the death of Kurt Cobain, Nirvana disbanded and Grohl had some options to consider musically. He was invited to join other bands and almost became a drummer with Tom Petty's band.

Instead he decided to release an album of his own songs using the name Foo Fighters. On that first album, he wrote every song, he sang and he played every instrument. When the album became a success, he needed to gather up musicians for a tour to support the album.

The band initially consisted of Nate Mendel on bass, Pat Smear on guitar, Dave Grohl on guitar and vocals, and William Goldsmith on drums. This first lineup of Foo Fighters debuted publicly at a show in California in February 1995.
2. What's the name of the debut album by the band?

Answer: Foo Fighters

The debut album, eponymously called "Foo Fighters", was released in July 1995. The album was recorded solely by Dave Grohl during one week in October 1994, with Grohl singing all the vocals and playing every instrument. There were some big hits from the album, including "This is a Call" and "Big Me". Grohl has said that he recorded the songs as a way to try to get over the suicide of Kurt Cobain. Since he was previously a drummer, he was insecure about his vocals and is quoted as saying ""You know how people double their vocals to make them stronger? That album the vocals are quadrupled."
3. The original drummer for the band, William Goldsmith, was replaced by which man who tragically passed away in 2022?

Answer: Taylor Hawkins

William Goldsmith was the original drummer with the band. Goldsmith lasted from 1995 to 1997 and left after the drums he recorded for the second album were re-recorded by singer Dave Grohl because he wasn't happy with them. Goldsmith understandably felt pretty bad about the experience and left the band. Taylor Hawkins was the touring drummer with Canadian singers Alanis Morissette and Sass Jordan and the drummer for the band Sylvia before joining Foo Fighters.

He joined them in 1997, in time for the tour to support their second album.

In 2005 he was named "Best Rock Drummer" by the magazine "Rhythm." He was the drummer for the band until he died in March 2022 in Colombia while the band were touring.
4. Widely regarded as one of the best songs by the band, which song contains these lyrics? "If everything could ever be this real forever If anything could ever be this good again"

Answer: Everlong

The song "Everlong" was released in 1997 as the second single from the second album by the band. It reached top ten on the Canada Rock/Alternative chart, the UK Rock chart and the US Alternative Airplay and Mainstream Rock charts. In a "Rolling Stone" readers poll in 2013, the song was listed as the best Foo Fighters song and the Australian radio network Triple M listed it as the top modern rock song in 2014.

A young You Tube drumming sensation named Nandi Bushell was invited to play the song live with the band at a concert in Los Angeles in 2021.

At the time she was eleven years old and performed the song incredibly.
5. Foo Fighters don't shy away from a fight. They have a long standing feud with what controversial church?

Answer: Westboro Baptist Church

The two groups have been in a feud since about 2011 when members of the Westboro Baptist Church showed up to picket a Foo Fighters concert because of the lyrics to one of their songs. Foo Fighters decided to rent a flatbed truck and protest the protest group, playing the offending song live. The feud hasn't stopped there as the church has picketed several shows by the band. In 2021 the band decided once again to protest the church protest, this time playing a cover of a Bee Gees song and proclaiming to the members of the church "You should be dancing."
6. In June 2015 the band were performing live in Sweden when what unfortunate incident happened?

Answer: Lead singer Grohl broke his leg

Dave Grohl is a total legend and this story just confirms it! While performing at a concert in Sweden, Grohl fell off the stage and broke his leg, but the show must go on! While he was being tended to, the band performed "Under Pressure" as Grohl was brought back on stage on a stretcher.

He was then situated on a chair with his leg propped up and medics tending to it. Grohl joined the band and finished the song and concert. He was flown to London after the show and had surgery on his leg. He needed six metal pins to stabilize the break.
7. The band's ninth studio album has some pretty famous guests on it including a very well known Liverpudlian who plays drums on the song "Sunday Rain." Who do you think that might be?

Answer: Paul McCartney

The ninth studio album by the band is called "Concrete and Gold" and was released in September 2015. The album was recorded at a rather busy studio where musicians just bumped into each other and decided to collaborate. As a result, there are a number of famous musicians who participated in the recording of the album. Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men fame provided background vocals on the song "Concrete and Gold". Justin Timberlake sang background vocals on the song "Make It Right". Jess Greene, formerly of The Jayhawks, contributed to three of the songs.

And probably the most famous collaborator of all on this album was Sir Paul McCartney himself. He recorded the drums for the song "Sunday Rain." Apparently McCartney recorded the drum tracks without even hearing the song first, he listened to singer Dave Grohl acoustically play the track, and took it from there!
8. In 2021 the band released a pretty decent album of disco covers. The album is called "Hail Satin" but what is the name the band released the album under?

Answer: Dee Gees

Foo Fighters released an album of disco covers on July 17th, 2021, for Record Store Day. They released the album under the name Dee Gees. The album includes a number of Bee Gees covers, including an excellent cover of the song "Tragedy." The name Dee Gees was chosen as it is a play on the name Bee Gees and uses the initials of Foo Fighters singer Dave Grohl.

The name of the album "Hail Satin" is a play on Satan and a nod to satin material, popular during the disco era.
9. The band has won numerous awards. 2021 in particular was a big year for them. They received the first ever "global icon" award from which video music award channel?

Answer: MTV

In 2021 Foo Fighters were the first ever recipients of the MTV "global icon" award. The band performed at the award show and were introduced by singer Billie Eilish who called them "legends." In the same year, they were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in the first year they became eligible to be included.

They've also won numerous Grammy Awards. In 2012 they won five of the six they were nominated for. Between 1996 and 2018, Foo Fighters were nominated six times for awards by "Kerrang!" magazine and won every single time.
10. The band released a not very well received comedy horror movie in 2022. What is it called?

Answer: Studio 666

The movie "Studio 666" was released in February 2022. The movie is directed by BJ McDonnell and is based on a story by singer Dave Grohl. In the movie, the band move into a mansion to record an album and learn that the mansion is haunted. Grohl becomes possessed by a demon and the remaining band members die. Reviews were mixed.

Some reviewers found some good horror moments in it while some panned it, stating that it didn't quite hit the mark of good horror or good comedy.
