Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Angie"
Answer: The Rolling Stones
"Angie" was on the 1973 album "Goats Head Soup". Kieth Richards is given most of the credit for writing this hit, though Mick Jagger had some input. It reached #1 on the charts in Australia, Canada, the U.S. and several European charts. It reached number one in the UK.
2. "Beth"
Answer: Kiss
Co-written and sung by Kiss drummer Peter Criss, "Beth" first appeared on Kiss' 1976 album "Destroyer". It was the only song released by Kiss with none of the band on instruments. Studio musicians were on piano and acoustic guitar and the New York Philharmonic provided the orchestra. Criss wrote the song with Chelsea band mate Stan Penridge before Kiss formed in 1973. Beth only made the top ten in the US and Canada.
3. "Roxanne"
Answer: The Police
From the 1978 album "Outlandos d'Amour", "Roxanne" has lyrics with the perspective of a man falling in love with a prostitute. Lead singer and bassist Sting wrote the song. "Roxanne" made the Top 40 on most of the major charts worldwide, and is in the Grammy Hall of Fame.
4. "Maggie May"
Answer: Rod Stewart
From the 1971 album "Every Picture Tells a Story", "Maggie May" was for the most part Stewart's autobiographical account of his sexual encounter with an older woman. It reached number one in Australia, Canada, the UK and the US.
5. "Layla"
Answer: Derek and the Dominos/Eric Clapton
"Layla" was written by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon. The single was on the 1970 album "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs", the only studio album by Derek and the Dominos. This single reached the top ten in all the major English speaking nation's charts.
In 1992, Clapton released an acoustic version of "Layla", found on the album "Unplugged". This single had success similar to the original version.
6. "Rhiannon"
Answer: Fleetwood Mac
Stevie Nicks wrote and sang lead vocals on this song, found on Fleetwood Mac's second eponymous album, released in 1975. Nicks found the name in a novel and liked the name enough to write a song featuring it. Only later did she discover the "Otherworld" Rhiannon, found in "Mabinogion", Welsh stories compiled in the 13th-14th centuries.
The song made the top 20 on several charts worldwide, but only peaked at 46 in the UK.
7. "Athena"
Answer: The Who
"Athena" was the first track and first single from the 1982 album "It's Hard". This was the last Who studio album with original bassist John Entwistle and drummer Kenny Jones. Lead guitarist Pete Townshend wrote the song, but it was originally titled "Theresa". Pete took a liking to actress Theresa Russell, and penned a song rather revealing about his feelings.
The title was changed as well as some of the lyrics. "Athena" was the last Who song to crack the Top 40 in both the UK and US.

Answer: The Kinks
Lola made the top ten throughout the major English speaking countries' charts. The single is from the long titled 1970 album "Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One".
