Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who wrote "Hey Jude"?

Answer: Paul McCartney

Keith Richards is in the Rolling Stones. Paul McCartney wrote this song for Julian Lennon when John Lennon was getting his first divorce from Cynthia Powell. "Hey Jude" was released as an A-side single in 1968, it sold over 8 million copies worldwide and it topped the charts in 11 countries.
2. Which Beatles' son was "Hey Jude" written for?

Answer: John Lennon

It was written for Julian Lennon. Julian said that him and Paul McCartney were a lot closer than Julian and John Lennon were. Julian only discovered "Hey Jude" was written for him in a discussion with Paul McCartney in a hotel room almost twenty years after the song was written.
3. In which studio was the master track of "Hey Jude" recorded?

Answer: Trident Studios

It was recorded at Trident studios to utilize their eight-track recorder. At the moment, Abbey Road Studio only had a four-track recorder. "Hey Jude" was recorded while the Beatles were recording the White Album.
4. How large was the orchestra in the final "Hey Jude" take?

Answer: 36-piece

The orchestra included 10 violins, 3 violas, 3 cellos, 2 flutes, 1 contra bassoon, 1 bassoon, 2 clarinets, 1 contra bass clarinet, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 2 horns, percussion and 2 string bases. Paul McCartney told them to drop their instruments and clap in the final part of the song, and one of the members refused. Of course, the Beatles played instruments as well, Paul played piano, John played acoustic guitar, George did guitar and Ringo did drums.
5. When Paul McCartney started the master take, Ringo Starr left his drumming booth unnoticed by the other Beatles, what was the reason for this?

Answer: He had to go to the bathroom.

He left to go to the bathroom. When he came back, it was just before he needed to drum. He started drumming just in the nick of time.
6. Which track appeared on the 'B' Side of the Hey Jude single?

Answer: Revolution

It was released August 26 1968 in the United States and August 30 1968 in the United Kingdom. Revolution was placed on the 'B' side, a decision that John Lennon was not too happy about. Lennon had orginally intended for Revolution to appear on the 'A' side.
7. How many times is the "Na na na na na na naaa...Hey Jude..." sequence repeated during the entire song(from the first 'na' to 'Jude') in the master recording?

Answer: 18

If you count, it should be 18. Over top of all of the na na naa's, you can hear Paul McCartney shouting different lyrics from the song. The entire sequence is 'na na na na na na naa, na na na naaa, Hey Jude', and Paul begins shouting around the fourth sequence.
8. At about 2:53 minutes into the final track, John Lennon yelled something, what was it?

Answer: "Wrong chord ...!"

Yep this is what he yelled, and if you listen closely, you can still hear it. "Alright, sing it!" was made up. "Don't make it bad Jude! is a lyric in the song. "From the heart of the black country!" was from an intro that can be heard in the Beatles' Anthology 3.

The entire intro was 'From the heart of the black country, When I was a robber in Boston place, You gathered round me with your fine embrace'
9. What was the original title of "Hey Jude"?

Answer: Hey Jules

It was changed to Jude because Paul thought it was a stronger name. Jules is short for Julian. John Lennon thought the song was written for him, so he thought 'John' was a replacement for 'Jude'.
10. "Hey Jude" set a record as the longest single written to hit number one in the United States' charts, how long did the single stay at number one?

Answer: 9 weeks

It entered the charts on September 14 1968, and it stayed there for the next 19 weeks. After a couple of weeks, Hey Jude was escalated to number one, where it stayed for the next 9 weeks. It also holds the record for the longest time spent by a Beatles' single to hit number one.
