Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which former member of the Stone Roses released the single 'F.E.A.R.' in 2003?

Answer: Ian Brown

'F.E.A.R.' was the first single from former Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown's third album, 'Music of the Spheres'. Brown cleverly incorporated an acrostic spelling the word 'fear' into each line of the song, with lines such as 'for everyman a religion', 'free expression as revolution' and 'forget everything and remember'.

He was inspired to write the song by Malcolm X's autobiography, which discussed etymology and using language to control people. Manchester United fans in the Stretford End of Old Trafford created a banner based on the song with 'For Everymanc A Religion' on it (Brown is a United fan himself).
2. Which British band released the album 'Hopes and Fears' in 2004?

Answer: Keane

The name of Keane's debut album came from a poem called 'Snowed In', which was used as a B-side on 'Somewhere Only We Know' (later covered by Lily Allen for a Christmas advert for the John Lewis retail chain). Five singles were released from the album in the UK: 'Somewhere Only We Know', 'Everybody's Changing', 'Bedshaped', 'This Is the Last Time' and 'Bend and Break'.

It won a Brit Award for Best Album in 2005.
3. Which two British newspapers does Lily Allen mention in 'The Fear'?

Answer: The 'Sun' and the 'Daily Mirror'

It's a play on words. Allen sings 'I look at the Sun and I look in the Mirror', and is referring to both the literal objects and the papers, both of which are tabloids that thrive on celebrity gossip. Allen is the daughter of actor Keith Allen and the older sister of another actor, Alfie Allen, who 'Game of Thrones' might recognise as Theon Greyjoy. 'The Fear' was the first single from Allen's second album 'It's Not Me, It's You'.

It won Best Track at the Q Awards in 2009, and two Ivor Novello Awards the following year.
4. The Australian singer Sia released the album '1000 Forms of Fear' in 2014. Which of these was NOT a single from '1000 Forms of Fear'?

Answer: Distractions

Sia Furler first found fame singing with British electronica duo Zero 7, before branching out on her own as a solo singer-songwriter; 'Distractions' is one of the songs she sang with them. She also collaborated with Rihanna on 'Diamonds' and David Guetta on 'Titanium', for which she provided vocals. 'Chandelier' was notably Sia's first song to enter the chart where she was the lead artist, rather than featuring on someone else's work. 'Elastic Heart', which also featured producer Diplo and The Weeknd, appeared on the soundtrack to 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire'; Sia later released a solo version of the song. 'Big Girls Cry' was only released in Australia and Europe.
5. 'Fear of the Dark' is the title track of Iron Maiden's ninth album. Which member of the band wrote it?

Answer: Steve Harris

Steve Harris is Iron Maiden's bassist and one of the founding members of the band, along with guitarist Dave Murray. He also produced the album 'Fear of the Dark'. A live version of the song, from the 1992 live album 'A Real Live One', was released as a single in 1993. Fightstar, the band fronted by former Busted singer Charlie Simpson, covered 'Fear of the Dark' for 'Maiden Heaven', a tribute album given away with rock/metal magazine 'Kerrang!' in 2008. 'Fear of the Dark' was also the final album to feature Bruce Dickinson on vocals; he was subsequently replaced by Blaze Bayley, though he rejoined in 1999.
6. Marina Diamandis released the album 'Love + Fear' in 2019 under the name of Marina. By which stage name was she formerly known?

Answer: Marina and the Diamonds

Marina Diamandis is a Welsh singer-songwriter who performed under the name of Marina and the Diamonds ('Diamonds' being a play on her surname). 'Love + Fear' was the first album she recorded as Marina, and is actually a double album; 'Love', the first half, was initially released on its own on 4th April 2019, and the full album was released a few weeks later. 'Love + Fear' is also a concept album of sorts, in that it explores Swiss-American psychologist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross' theory that humans are essentially only capable of experiencing love and fear.
7. Which riot grrrl band, who came from Florida and had a dreadlocked lead singer named Jessicka, sang 'Fear of Dying'?

Answer: Jack Off Jill

Jack Off Jill were formed in Florida in the early '90s by Jessicka and multi-instrumentalist Robin Moulder, and got their big break supporting Marilyn Manson. Their name was inspired by some graffiti Jessicka saw in a police station, saying 'Jack and Jill went up a hill and Jack shot a cop'. One of Manson's bandmates, Scott Michael Putesky aka Daisy Berkowitz, briefly played guitar with JOJ in 1997 and 1998. 'Fear of Dying' was from Jack Off Jill's second full album, 'Clear Hearts Grey Flowers', released in 2000.

They split up later that year. The band reunited in 2015 with original drummer Tenni Ah-Cha-Cha and Michelle Inhell, plus Helen Storer - formerly of British rock band Fluffy - on bass.
8. Taylor Swift released her second album, 'Fearless', in 2008. For which single from the album - much to Kanye West's disapproval - did she win the MTV Award for Best Female Music Video in 2009?

Answer: You Belong with Me

'You Belong with Me' was the third single to be released from 'Fearless' and is one of Swift's best-selling singles of all time. She was inspired to write the song after hearing a male friend arguing with his girlfriend over the phone. During the MTV Awards ceremony, as Swift was accepting her award, Kanye West interrupted and stated that Beyonce's 'Single Ladies' was 'one of the best videos of all time'. Knowles, who herself had won the award for Video of the Year, responded by inviting Swift onstage to finish her acceptance speech. 'Weird Al' Yankovic parodied 'You Belong with Me' with 'TMZ' in 2011.
9. '(Don't Fear) The Reaper' is Blue Öyster Cult's signature song, and was also featured in a 'Saturday Night Live' sketch featuring Will Ferrell adding a little extra to the song. Which un-rock 'n' roll instrument did his character play?

Answer: Cowbell

"I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell!" says Bruce Dickinson, Christopher Walken's character in the 'Saturday Night Live' sketch, which features a fictionalised take on the recording of the song. Will Ferrell plays Gene Frenkle, a session cowbell player who Dickinson encourages to 'really explore the space', to the annoyance of the rest of the band. Guitarist Buck Dharma, who wrote and sang the original, enjoyed the sketch but disliked that being associated with the sketch made the song less creepy. '(Don't Fear) The Reaper' was also the inspiration for Stephen King's novel 'The Stand', and fellow author Terry Pratchett had it translated into Latin ('Noli Timere Messorem') for his personal coat of arms, Death being a major character in the 'Discworld' books.
10. Which singer, who also featured on a cover of 'Lady Marmalade' for the 'Moulin Rouge' soundtrack, released the album 'Fear of Flying'?

Answer: Mya

'Fear of Flying' was Mya's second album, released in 2000, and the title was inspired by the Erica Jong book of the same name. She also saw it as a metaphor for 'the ups and downs of life'. Three singles, 'The Best of Me' (which featured rapper Jadakiss), 'Case of the Ex' and 'Free', were released from the album. Beenie Man and Lisa 'Left-Eye' Lopes of TLC also guested, on 'Lie Detector' and 'Takin' Me Over' respectively. Rodney Jerkins, Robin Thicke, Kandi Burruss and Wyclef Jean were among the co-writers.
