"King of the Nighttime World" was written by Hollywood Stars manager Kim Fowley and guitarist Mark Anthony. They recorded the song in 1974. With their permission, KISS lead singer Paul Stanley and Destroyer producer Bob Ezrin reworked the arrangement of the song with the songwriters' permission and recorded it on their 1976 album Destroyer, which went triple-platinum and became KISS's first successful studio album.

Kai Whiting and his orchestra recorded the first version of the song in 1963. Irma Thomas covered the song later that year. Then the Rolling Stones released their version of the song. The Stones version of the song became a top 5 hit in four different countries.

Irma Thomas's version of the song is my favorite version.

Prince wrote quite a few songs that became hits for other artists. He recorded "Manic Monday" with singer Appolonia, but then decided to give the song to The Bangles. The Prince/Appolonia version surprisingly wasn't a hit, but the Bangles version of the song was a top 5 hit in 9 different countries.

Dolly Parton wrote the song in 1972. Whitney Houston covered the song for the musical "The Bodyguard." Houston's version spent 14 weeks at the top of the Billboard chart and is one of the most successful singles of all time.
