Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When she was twelve, Olivia entered a look-alike contest for which child star?

Answer: Hayley Mills

Mills' most well-known film, "The Parent Trap", was released in 1961 before Olivia's 13th birthday. She won the contest.
2. Olivia has recorded songs written by three of these artists. Which one did not write a song she sang?

Answer: Laura Nyro

Nyro created hits for many artists, but not Olivia. Too bad. Bob Dylan wrote Olivia's very first American Top 40 hit, "If Not For You," in 1970. She recorded it in 1971. Olivia covered Dolly Parton's "Jolene" on her 1976 "Come On Over" album. And Elton John (with Bernie Taupin) wrote "The Rumour" for Olivia in 1988.
3. In 1985, Olivia recorded a duet with a member of which group?

Answer: The Beach Boys

The Beach Boy was Carl Wilson. The song appeard on Olivia's "Soul Kiss" album, and it was called "You were Great, How Was I?" (Racy!) It was not released as a single. Sadly, Carl Wilson died of cancer in 1998.
4. Which quirky independent film features a character who is crazy about Olivia?

Answer: Gas Food Lodging

This bittersweet movie starred Brooke Adams as a single mother with two almost grown daughters, Ione Skye and Fairuza Balk, working at a New Mexico truck stop. Skye tries to help Balk capture a boy's interest by asking, "What's his type?" to which Balk replies "This!" and holds up an Olivia album. "GFL" was adapted for the screen and directed by Allison Anders.
5. We all know Olivia held the #1 spot for ten weeks in the U.S. with "Physical." Which poor act patiently waited their turn at #2, only to get leapfrogged by another song?

Answer: Foreigner

Foreigner's "Waiting for a Girl Like You" must have been written with Olivia in mind. Hall and Oates are to blame for taking the spot with "I Can't Go For That" after "Physical" dropped to #3. The greedy duo had also held the spot with "Private Eyes" just before "Physical" as well. Foreigner holds the "Longest #2" record.
6. To which of these charity singles did Olivia lend her vocals?

Answer: none of these

She did, however, lead a group of famous rockers in a 1989 environmental song called "The Spirit of the Forest." It was later on a 1994 British album, "Earthrise." Why Olivia was not on any of the other three charity singles is a mystery.
7. Everyone knows Olivia's Koala Blue clothing/gift stores went bust in the early 'nineties. In 2002, Olivia resurrected the Koala Blue name. Now if you buy a Koala Blue product, what are you buying?

Answer: wine

She was pitched the idea by a friend, toured the vineyards in her native Australia, and set up a winery in the southeastern region. It has been a success there, and has been exported in smaller quantities. You might also soon be buying bottled spring water, chocolates, and cocktails, they're expanding.
8. Olivia reunited with her "Grease" director Randal Kleiser for his very personal 1996 feature film, "It's My Party" What moving Olivia song plays over the closing credits?

Answer: "Don't Cut Me Down"

It was first recorded for her GAIA album, the one she released just after her cancer treatments. The song is actually about trees, but it seemed appropriate in the context of a movie about life and death issues. There was not a dry eye in the theatre. The incorrect answers are all from GAIA as well, all written by Olivia.
9. In the U.S., there were two "Greatest Hits" compilation albums, with a total of twenty-two songs. Just one was written by Olivia; which was it?

Answer: "Changes"

"Changes," written in the second person, was a somber tune about a wife saying goodbye to her soon-to-be ex-husband. Olivia, whose own parents divorced, wanted to convey the emotional effect on a child. At the end of the song we find out the contrite husband already has a new gal picking him up.

The song did not hit the U.S. charts and may not have even been released as a single, but there it is. It has held up well over time, much better than the grating country tune, D-I-V-O-R-C-E.
10. In the U.S., all of these songs were released only as "B" sides (remember those?) to Olivia singles, except one. Which song was actually on an Olivia album (in the U.S.)?

Answer: "I'll Bet You a Kangaroo"

It was on the Don't Stop Believin' album and was also the B-side of "Sam." However, when MCA later packaged the Don't Stop Believin' and Totally Hot albums on a single CD, they had to omit one selection to save space; that selection was "Kangaroo"! (I bought it, it was not missed.)
11. Olivia was appointed United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for the Environment during whose U.S. presidency?

Answer: George Bush in 1989

She was the first person to ever hold this position. She focused her efforts on protecting the Brazilian Rainforest. However, shortly after that she was the target of some angry American Koala Blue franchisees who felt she didn't do enough to protect their investments!
12. What was Olivia's first album recorded in the USA?

Answer: Don't Stop Believin'

Many people think she didn't start recording here until after 'Grease', but she had already been here over a year before that fateful meeting with 'Grease' producer Allan Carr.
13. Who is Andy Kim?

Answer: A singer Olivia knocked out of the #1 spot on the pop charts.

Kim was a Canadian bubblegum pop singer from the late 'sixties who had decided to reinvent himself with a more rock oriented sound on his own newly-formed record label, Ice. His first song on that label, "Rock Me Gently," went to #1 in 1974, but was only there a week when Olivia's "I Honestly Love You" came along. He would never reach that position again.
14. Which was the sports-themed film to which Olivia sang the Oscar-nominated theme song?

Answer: The Other Side of the Mountain

The short song was called "Richard's Window." The film told the story of Olympic skiing hopeful Jill Kinmont's paralyzing fall off a mountain in 1955. The movie was made 20 years later, and starred Marilyn Hassett--who in real life had been paralyzed while filming a commercial.

The music was written by Charles Fox, who composed the "Wonder Woman" TV theme song. Fox would be Oscar-nominated again three years later for "Ready to Take a Chance Again" the theme from "Foul Play" (comical mystery starring Goldie Hawn).

Richard's Window" lost the Best Original Song Oscar to Keith Carradine's "I'm Easy", from the movie "Nashville". Neither song is remembered as well as another nominee from 1975, "Do You Know Where You're Going To?", the theme from "Mahogany", sung by that film's star, Diana Ross, which probably should have won.
15. All though she can do a lot of things, which one of these goals is unattainable for Olivia?

Answer: President of the United States

It has easily been 25 years since Olivia started recording, which is the only requirement for Rock's Hall of Fame induction. And although she is Australian, she was born in England, and eligible for damehood, just like recently-Damed American Elizabeth Taylor. However, only natural-born U.S. citizens can be president.
16. Olivia must have enjoyed working with director Del Shores on the film, 'Sordid Lives', because they ended up making a 2001 movie for cable TV together called 'The Wilde Girls'. What was interesting about it?

Answer: Olivia co-starred with her daughter.

Olivia plays a overworked single mom (and ex-singer) whose daughter wants to break into the music biz. Olivia's daughter, Chloe, was 15 when this aired. She is billed as "Chloe Rose". Chloe, who signed a recording contract in 2003, has also performed in stage musicals in Australia. They grow up so fast.
17. Which fellow singer and movie star got married the same weekend as Olivia in 1984?

Answer: Bette Midler

Olivia and Bette were married in December 1984. However, Bette and her husband, Martin Von Hasselberg, are still married. When People magazine covered Olivia's wedding, they had a photo of her big dog Jackson, who attended the wedding. I then remembered there's a photo of Jackson inside her 1975 "Clearly Love" album from when he was a pup. Sally Field also got married that same weekend.
18. Which former ONJ costar later became her brother-in-law?

Answer: Jeff Conaway (Grease)

Jeff married Olivia's sister, Rona, in 1980. They got divorced later in the 1980s.
19. Before "The Grease Megamix" was released, what was the last original song by Olivia to hit the American Top 40?

Answer: "Soul Kiss"

Soul Kiss peaked at #20 in late 1985 and was backed the song Electric, which was not included on the U.S. album of the same name. The other U.S. singles also hit the Hot 100, but they didn't quite make it to the Top 40 either.
20. For die-hard fans only: In which Shelley Long movie can you spot a picture of Olivia on the wall?

Answer: The Money Pit

When Shelley wakes up in the house of her ex-husband (Alexander Godunov), he lets her believe that something happened between them. If you look behind him, one of the pictures is of Olivia with some net-like thing over her face holding her hair up--looking like a widow. It was the picture on the back of her "Soul Kiss" single. Thanks for playing!
