Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The song "Sugar On Sunday" was a Top 40 hit for The Clique in 1969, reaching number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It was a remake of a tune off a very successful album from the prior year by a very successful group. What group did the original?

Answer: Tommy James and The Shondells

Tommy James' "Crimson and Clover" album in 1968 yielded the title cut which was a number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, as well as the single "Crystal Blue Persuasion", which was a number two hit. The album itself reached as high as number eight on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart.

The song mentioned in this question was not released as a single but was picked up by a pop band from Houston, Texas called The Clique in 1969 (not to be confused with the British group of the same name), and they took the song to number 22 on the Billboard charts.
2. The controversial song "Sugar Walls" was a hit in 1984 for this lady from Scotland. Who was she?

Answer: Sheena Easton

The song came of her 1984 album "Private Heaven" and made it to number nine on the U.S Billboard Hot 100 charts as well as number one on the U.S. Dance charts. It didn't meet with as much success in the U.K., only reaching number 95. It reached the Top 20 in Canada.

The song was written by rock icon Prince, under the pseudonym "Alexander Nevermind". The controversy was over the very lyrics which suggested sexual intercourse and the entering of a vagina. No graphic examples are necessary here. Suffice it to say that many stations would not play the song, and it was graphic enough to catch the attention of evangelist Jimmy Swaggart, who made specific mention of the song on a number of his broadcasts at the time.
3. This singer, with a famous father, had a hit with the song "Sugar Town" in 1966. Who was he/she?

Answer: Nancy Sinatra

The daughter of Frank Sinatra had just come off her mega hit "These Boots Are Made For Walking" which hit number one earlier in 1966. She released a couple of other singles during that year which didn't do as well, but then she came up with this hit and scored a number five Billboard Hot 100 placing. Of course, the next year, she had her biggest hit, a duet with her father called "Something Stupid".
4. Back in 1963, this group from the U.K. scored with "Sugar and Spice" and a couple of months later became part of the U.S. British Invasion. Who were they?

Answer: The Searchers

The Searchers scored with this hit in 1963 which had a number two placing in the U.K. during that year. It could only muster a number 44 placing in the U.S., being released before the U.S. "British Invasion" of 1964. Once that took place, The Searchers had a number of big hits both in the U.S. and the U.K. as well, most notably a remake of "Love Potion No. 9", and "Needles and Pins".
5. This song, called "Sugar Daddy" was a moderate hit, lost in a plethora of number one hits for this midwestern group which began in the early 1970s and had a famous lead singer. What group?

Answer: The Jackson Five

This was a 1971 release from the Jackson 5 featuring Michael Jackson on lead vocals. The song came off the Jackson's first "Greatest Hits" album which was released late in the year. It peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 charts at number ten, but was overshadowed by their prior hit "Never Can Say Goodbye" which had been a number two Billboard hit a couple of months before.

The song did better on the R & B charts where it peaked at number three. Nevertheless, it was still a million seller in the U.S.
6. "Sugar Shack" was a top of the charts recording in 1963 for this group who were cut short by the following year's U.S. British Invasion. Who were they?

Answer: Jimmy Gilmer and The Fireballs

The Fireballs were a group that had been around since the late 1950s and when some defections occurred, Jimmy Gilmer joined the group. Their greatest success was with "Sugar Shack" which became a number one Billboard Hot 100 hit, and was the number one song for the year 1963.

They did have another Top 20 hit in 1964 called "Daisy Pickin'" which reached number 15 on the charts, but they were basically squeezed out by the British groups after that. They did, however, hit the charts one more time in 1968, when they just called themselves The Fireballs again, and had a number nine hit with "Bottle Of Wine".
7. This super group scored one of their many hits in 1971 with the release of "Brown Sugar". Who were they?

Answer: The Rolling Stones

The song was credited to Jagger/Richards although it is said that is was mostly Jagger. The song came of the album called "Sticky Fingers", and it was a number one Billboard Hit in the U.S. and number two in the U.K. The song dealt with the taboo subjects of interracial sex, various sexual acts, and drug use. By 1971, these types of subjects actually made it through the censors, and although controversial, were accepted in certain rock songs.

The song is also listed at number 490 on Rolling Stone Magazine's "500 Greatest Rock and Roll Songs".
8. This group, having recorded since 1977, scored their biggest hit ten years later with the song "Pour Some Sugar On Me". Who were these rockers?

Answer: Def Leppard

Def Leppard formed in Sheffield, England, in 1977. They had some prior success with the release of their album "Pyromania" which yielded the minor hits "Photograph", "Rock Of Ages", and "Foolin". When the album called "Hysteria" was released "Pour Some Sugar On Me" zoomed toward the top of the charts and became a number two hit in the U.S.

Other cuts on the album included "Armegeddon" and "Love Bites", both of which became Top Five hits in the U.S. Whatever success these other songs had, "Pour Some Sugar" remains their most identifiable hit.
9. This group of guys had a number of hits before going on to other ventures. One of the hits was called "No Sugar Tonight". Who were these guys?

Answer: The Guess Who

The sixth of eight straight Top 40 hits in the late 1960s and early 1970s, "No Sugar Tonight" was the B-side of "American Woman". While that song went all the way to number one, "Sugar" peaked at number 39, and while that doesn't sound so good, it actually is a pretty good indicator of how popular the group was at the time.

The album cut was recorded as a medley with another song called "New Mother Nature". Of course, the group disbanded a few years later. Burton Cummings, the co-writer of the song, went on to a solo career, and Randy Bachman, the other co-writer went on to form "Bachman-Turner Overdrive".
10. The last song in this group was a number one song in 1969. In fact it was THE number one song in 1969. Who did "Sugar Sugar"?

Answer: The Archies

The number one song of the year in 1969, this song, written by the legendary Jeff Barry, along with Andy Kim, was the brainchild of Ron Dante, a studio musician who did most of the voice work on this song,(along with singer Toni Wine), as well as some of the other Archies hits.

He also did recordings under other names and released them, such as "Tracy" released under the name, The Cufflinks. "Sugar Sugar" was, at the time, the only song by a fictional group to become a number one hit of any year.
