It is no secret that the song was written in response to two tunes by Neil Young, "Southern Man" and "Alabama", both of which dealt with racism and slavery in the U.S. South. Many of the lyrics to the song directly refer to racial incidents which took place during the early 1960s, specifically in Birmingham, Alabama.

Although the song only peaked at number 36 it started a string of charting hits in a career that has lasted over 40 years.

15. A song that was considered a joke by the group who wrote and performed it ended up being a number one hit for them. Who were the guys that judged so badly when they put together "Sweet Child o' Mine" in 1988?

Answer: Guns N' Roses

The clue should have helped. Guns 'n Roses put together "Sweet Child o' Mine" in 1988 and when the group was recording their "Appetite for Destruction" album. They were fooling around in the studio and Slash started to play what he called a circus riff.

The others joined in and the song came together in a very short period of time. They all thought that it was not a terrific tune, but could be used as filler on the album. Some filler! The song became Guns N' Roses only number one charting tune during their careers. One more example of why musicians should stick to music.
