Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I know this missing word in the Three Dog Night hit "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)" is a fermented beverage, but I'm just not sure which one. Could I please get a little help here? "Want some ____ in your water? Sugar in your tea? What's all these crazy questions they're askin' me?"

Answer: Whiskey

The song describes the events at a crazy party and the plight of the party-goer who should have probably listened to his mother. The tune which was written by Randy Newman, was originally recorded by Eric Burdon & the Animals and first appeared on the band's 1967 LP "Eric Is Here". Three Dog Night's version was a smash hit for the group, spending two weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in July of 1970. "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)" has been covered a number of times, including a version by Tom Jones and the Stereophonics, which reached number four on the UK Singles Chart in 2000.
2. "You're So Vain" by Carly Simon, was one of the biggest hits from 1973, but I still get stuck on one particular line. What's missing from the following lyrics? "You walked into the party Like you were walking onto a yacht Your hat strategically dipped below one eye Your scarf it was ____"

Answer: Apricot

Ever since the release of "You're So Vain" there has been speculation as to who the song is about. Names that have been mentioned include, Mick Jagger, James Taylor, Cat Stevens and Warren Beatty. Simon has stated that the song is not about one man, but three separate individuals.

In an interview with People magazine in November of 2015, she did confirm that the second verse was about Beatty, but she would not say who the other two men were. "You're So Vain" was Simon's most successful single and her only chart topper on the Billboard Hot 100, spending the first three weeks of 1973 at number one.
3. In the second verse of the 1974 Golden Earring hit "Radar Love", they mention the name of a pop and country music powerhouse, who had a string of top ten hits in the late '50s and early '60s. Her name escapes me, but I do remember she was a "dynamite" performer. Who is missing from the following lyrics? "Radio's playing some forgotten song ____ ____ is comin' on strong The road has got me hypnotized I'm spinnin' into a new sunrise"

Answer: Brenda Lee

Formed in 1961 in South Holland, Golden Earring was extremely popular in their homeland, placing 18 singles inside the top 20 on the Dutch Top 40 charts between 1965 and 1972. "Radar Love" would become the group's breakout hit, reaching number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number seven on the UK Singles Chart. Brenda Lee released her first single in 1956 when she was only 12 years old.

The following year she recorded and released the song "Dynamite", which due to her young age and the fact that she only stood 4 feet 9 inches tall, earned her the nickname of Little Miss Dynamite.
4. Who are the Bee Gees conversing with in these lines from their 1971 hit "Lonely Days"? "Good morning ____ ____ You brighten up my day Come sit beside me in your way"

Answer: Mister Sunshine

After achieving international success during the latter part of the 1960s, group member Robin Gibb left the band in mid 1969 to embark on a solo career. Neither the Bee Gees nor Robin had much success during his absence, so they decided to reunite in August of 1970. Among the first songs that they wrote after getting back together was "Lonely Days", which went on to become the groups highest charting single up to that point, peaking at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in January of 1971.
5. Queen's 1975 hit "Killer Queen" is a wonderful song, but it does contain some rather odd lyrics. That's probably one of the reasons why I'm having a little trouble with the following lines. What's missing here? "She keeps Moet et Chandon In her pretty cabinet 'Let them ____ ____', she says Just like Marie Antoinette"

Answer: Eat Cake

"Killer Queen" was recorded for Queen's third studio album "Sheer Heart Attack", and was given a singles release in October of 1974, as part of a double A-side along with another track from the LP "Flick of the Wrist". The song went on to become the band's breakthrough hit, reaching number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May of 1975.

It was also an international hit, peaking at number two on the UK Singles Chart, while also reaching the top ten in several other countries. Written entirely by lead singer and pianist Freddie Mercury, "Killer Queen" was one of the first songs to feature the amazing harmonies that would become the group's trademark.
6. There are so many different locations mentioned in the Steve Miller Band's 1976 hit "Rock'n Me", it's hard to keep them straight. What American city is missing from these lines? "I went from Phoenix, Arizona All the way to Tacoma Philadelphia, ____, L.A."

Answer: Atlanta

"Rock'n Me" was the second single released from the Steve Miller Band's extremely successful 1976 LP "Fly Like an Eagle". The song went on to become the band's second number one on the Billboard Hot 100, topping the chart for one week in November of 1976. If the opening guitar riff from the song sounds a bit familiar, there's a good reason. Miller has admitted that he based it on the guitar part that was prominently featured in the 1970 hit "All Right Now" by the British rock band Free.
7. "Night Moves" by Bob Seger is one of my favorite songs from the '70s, but there is one line that I always seem to have trouble with. What year is missing from the following lyrics? "I woke last night to the sound of thunder How far off I sat and wondered Started humming a song from ____ Ain't it funny how the night moves"

Answer: 1962

"Night Moves" was based on a romantic relationship Seger had with a young lady he met in the early 1960s in his hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Although the relationship didn't last, the experience was the basis for his most successful song to date. Released in December of 1976, "Night Moves" climbed the Billboard Hot 100, eventually peaking at number four in the Spring of 1977. Seger has stated in numerous interviews that the 1962 song he was humming was a reference to "Be My Baby" by The Ronnettes, even though that song wasn't released until the Summer of 1963.
8. The 1978 film "Grease" is full of great songs, but my personal favorite is "You're the One That I Want". With that being said, I'm still having a small problem with one particular line from the song. What word am I missing here? "I got chills, they're multiplying And I'm losing control 'Cause the power you're supplying It's ____!"

Answer: Electrifying

"You're the One That I Want" is performed as a duet by Danny (John Travolta) and Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) in the film's finale. It was one of a handful of songs that were not in the original 1971 play, but were instead written specifically for the film.

The single became a massive hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in June of 1978, while also spending nine weeks atop the UK Singles Chart. It also topped the charts in several other countries, and has sold more than 15 million copies worldwide.
9. By any chance do you remember the three words that are missing in this verse from the Paul Simon hit "Mother and Child Reunion"? I'll bet Paul McCartney would know. "Oh, little darling of mine I can't for the life of me Remember a sadder day I know they say '____ ____ ____' "

Answer: Let it Be

Simon had always been a fan of reggae music and in particular Jimmy Cliff, so he decided to write a song in that musical style. He went to Kingston, Jamaica, where he recorded the song using members of members of Cliff's backing band. "Mother and Child Reunion" was Simon's first single release following his break-up with Art Garfunkel and it went on to become an international hit, peaking at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1972, while also reaching number five on the UK Singles Chart.

An interesting side note on how Simon came up with the title of the song was revealed in an interview he did with Rolling Stone magazine in 1972. When asked about it Simon said: "I was eating in a Chinese restaurant and there was a dish called Mother and Child Reunion. It's chicken and eggs. And I said, oh I love that title. I gotta use that one."
10. In the following lyrics from the Billy Preston hit "Nothing from Nothing" I know he's fighting for something, but I'm not sure what it is. Could you please help me figure it out? "Nothin' from nothin' leaves nothin' And I'm not stuffin', believe you me Don't you remember I told ya I'm a soldier in the war on ____, yeah Yes I am"

Answer: Poverty

Preston began his career playing keyboards for some of the biggest names in the music business, such as Little Richard, Sam Cooke and Ray Charles. He hooked up with The Beatles in the late 1960s, and was a major contributor on the band's final two albums "Abbey Road" and "Let it Be". "Nothing from Nothing" was Preston's second number one as a solo artist, spending one week atop the Billboard Hot 100 in October of 1974.
