Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Put the bark in the dog..." (Pavement)

Answer: "...and you've got a guardian"

From the song "Blue Hawaiian" on "Brighten the Corners". Pavement broke up after a tour to support their last album, "Terror Twilight". Singer Stephen Malkmus now fronts Steve Malkmus & the Jicks, guitarist Spiral Stairs focuses on his project Preston School of Industry.
2. "Love is just a joyride..." (Built to Spill)

Answer: "...drink a lot of beer and climb inside"

From the song "Joyride" on "The Normal Years". Fronted by indie rock guitar hero, Doug Martsch, Built to Spill have been known to throw classic rock covers into their original setlists; including Cheap Trick's "Dream Police" and Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird."
3. "We can't make love together..." (Vandals)

Answer: "...because you're 14"

From the song "14" on "Look What I Almost Stepped In". Vandals drummer, Josh Freese has sat in behind the kit with the likes of No Doubt and Perfect Circle.
4. "The universe is shaped exactly like the earth..." (Modest Mouse)

Answer: "...if you go straight long enough, you'll end up where you were"

From "3rd Planet" from "The Moon & Antarctica". Indie rock underdogs, Modest Mouse, inked a deal with Epic Records, which released "The Moon & Antarctica".
5. "You didn't leave much space at the bottom of the page..." (Superchunk)

Answer: "...there's room for four words, maybe three"

From "Small Definition" on the "Laughter Guns" EP. This might be a tough one, as I've heard only a limited number of this EP was released. The end of the "Laughter Guns" EP includes something like a 30 minute analogy of the Chunk song, "Hyper Enough," conducted by what sounds like 2 college radio DJs.
6. "Beauty sat bathing by a spring..." (Violent Femmes)

Answer: "...where fairest shades did hide her"

From "Hey Nonny Nonny" on "Why Do Birds Sing?" I know the Violent Femmes might not be considered "indie." To tell you the truth, I don't really know what "indie" is supposed to be. But they're one of my favorite bands, so I had to include them. Despite their first album containing all of the band's hits, they have consistently toured and recorded for the last two decades.
7. "Blurry eyes have bent..." (Crooked Fingers)

Answer: "...and I can't take you sober"

From "The Rotting Strip." Crooked Fingers is fronted by Eric Bachman, who used to play with Arches of Loaf. Check them out, if you haven't. They're good.
8. "Memory will rust and erode into lists of all that you gave me..." (The Weakerthans)

Answer: "...a blanket, some matches, this pain in my chest...the best parts of lonely"

From "Left & Leaving" on the album "Left & Leaving". John K. Samson hails from political punk band, Propagandhi. The Weakerthans, however, are a lyrically brilliant pop/rock/folk act out of Winnipeg, Canada.
9. "I wish I had a way to make things better..." (Sebadoh)

Answer: "...to rearrange the world and make you smile"

From "Ocean" on "Harmacy." Sebadoh frontman, Lou Barlow also occasionally lends his talents to the more loop-inspired Folk Implosion; who had a modest hit with "Natural One," from the "Kids" soundtrack.
10. "She said I've really come to hate my body..." (Sparklehorse)

Answer: "..and all the things that it requires in this world"

From "Maria's Little Elbows" on "Good Morning Spider." Sparklehorse frontman, Mark Linkous has recorded a version of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" with Thom Yorke of Radiohead fame. The song has shown up on a released compilation as well as various mp3 sites.
11. "Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch..." (They Might Be Giants)

Answer: "...who watches over you"

From "Birdhouse in Your Soul" from "Flood." Kind of a hit for They Might Be Giants, who have also found success providing music for television shows ("Malcolm in the Middle") and films ("Austin Powers 2").
12. "I just want a bit part in your life..." (The Lemonheads)

Answer: "...a walk-on would be fine"

From "Bit Part" on "It's a Shame About Ray." Oddly enough, this album's more memorable single was the cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson."
13. "I'm quite happy..." (Looper)

Answer: "...burning flies"

From "Burning Flies" on "Up a Tree." A spin off of Scottish band, Belle & Sebastian, Looper mixes loops, warm vocal melodies, and occasional Scottish-accent spoken word.
14. "Tell everybody waiting for Superman..." (Flaming Lips)

Answer: "...that they should try to hold on as best they can"

From "Waiting on Superman" from "The Soft Bulletin." The Flaming Lips are currently working on a movie that includes a performance from the old "Blues Clues" host.
15. "That's great it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes..." (R.E.M.)

Answer: "...an airplane, Lenny Bruce is not afraid"

From "It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine)" on "Document". Everybody knows the song, few people know the words. Or that the part of the song that says, "Lester Bangs, birthday party, cheesecake..." was inspired by a dream Michael Stipe had where he was at a party surrounded by people like Lester Bangs and Leonard Bernstein; who's initials were all L.B.
