Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What song from "The Soft Parade" harkens back to an earlier Doors sound, largely forgoing the orchestra and symphony that largely characterized that album?

Answer: Shaman's Blues

"Shaman's Blues" does not feature all the additional instrumentation that made "The Soft Parade" such a departure from The Doors's other studio work. According to the book "No One Gets Out Alive", Morrison wanted "Easy Ride" to be pulled as an A-Side single, although this did not happen.
2. Although Morrison was the primary lyricist for The Doors, Robbie Krieger also wrote some lyrics, including the lyrics to what 1967 track that peaked at Number 25 on the Billboard Top 100 in the US?

Answer: Love Me Two Times

Krieger wrote "Love Me Two Times" from the perspective of a solider or sailor going to war, possibly Vietnam. In 1990, Aerosmith covered the song, dedicating their version to Jim Morrison. In 2001, Aerosmith released their cover on a greatest hits compilation. During the 1972 tour after Morrison's death, Manzarek sang lead vocals on this song.
3. Jim Morrison wrote the "L.A. Woman" track "L'America" for which movie?

Answer: Zabriskie Point

Michelangelo Antonioni directed the 1970 picture "Zabriskie Point". Morrison wrote "L'America" specifically for the film, but for unknown reasons Antonioni rejected the song.

The soundtrack is notable for having several otherwise unreleased Pink Floyd song as well as Jerry Garcia tracks.

The other three possible answers are all soundtracks that Pink Floyd contributed too. "More" and "Obscured by Clouds" are full albums by Pink Floyd.
4. In 1968, the band began recording a song but ultimately abandoned the track because they were unsatisfied. Two years later, they resurrected the song to appear on the 1970 album "Morrison Hotel". Name the song.

Answer: Waiting for the Sun

The Doors faced a large problem with the 1968 album "Waiting on the Sun". They had primarily used the majority of their material for "The Doors" and "Strange Days". The central epic track for "Waiting for the Sun" was to be "Celebration of the Lizard".

However, the band could not get what they felt to be a definitive recording of that song, so they used only a portion of the track for the final album and had to write several more tracks. Strangely enough, they did not include "Waiting for the Sun", which in light of the "Celebration of the Lizard" does appear to be rather puzzling. Both "Queen of the Highway" and "Indian Summer" are older tracks as well.
5. "Who Scared You" was the B-side to what single from "The Soft Parade"?

Answer: Wishful Sinful

"Who Scared You" was one of only three Doors B-sides that did not appear on the original configuration of their studio albums. The other two are "You Need Meat (Don't Go No Further)", re-released on the 40th Anniversary Remaster of "L. A. Woman", and the still unreleased on CD B-side "Tree Trunk", from their last album "Full Circle".
6. What track from the 40th Anniversary Mix releases of all six Morrison studio albums actually has an a longer rendition of a previously released song due to the band including a previously deleted verse back into the song?

Answer: Cars Hiss By My Window

The original edit of "Cars Hiss By My Window" is around the 4:12 mark. In 2007, the band included a previously excised verse which bumped the running time to 4:58, almost five minutes long. The band also included previously unheard Morrison dialogue at the intro to "The Soft Parade", although there was no additional instrumental sections with this addition.
7. With "Hello, I Love You", Ray Davies of The Kinks sued The Doors because of a similiarity in the music of that track and The Kinks' song "All Day and All Night". According to Robby Krieger, "Hello, I Love You" was not based The Kings at all but on "Sunshine of Your Love". What artist originally wrote and recorded "Sunshine of Your Love"?

Answer: Cream

"Hello I Love You" was one of The Doors' older songs, and was one of six songs recorded for a demo in 1965 before Robbie Krieger joined the band. The band resurrected both "Hello I Love You" and "Summer's Almost Gone" for the 1968 album "Waiting for the Sun" after they had to abandon "Celebration of the Lizard". "Hello I Love You" proved to be The Doors' big break in the UK, peaking at Number 15 on the UK chart.

"Sunshine of Your Love" is from Cream's album "Disraeli Gears". It was Cream's first substantial American hit.
8. The Doors' song "End of Night" features lines from what poem by William Blake?

Answer: Auguries of Innocence

These lines from "End of the Night" are taken directly from Blake's poem: "some are borne to sweet delight, some are borne to sweet delight, some are borne to the endless night". Contemporary scholarship dates the from from 1803, but the text was not published until 1863. The text is from "The Pickering Manuscript", a collection of ten poems. These are the poems making up the manuscript:

"The Smile"
"The Golden Net"
"The Mental Traveller"
"The Land of Dreams"
"The Crystal Cabinet"
"The Grey Monk"
"Auguries of Innocence"
"Long John Brown and Little Mary Bell"
"William Bond"
9. How many songs from the 1967 debut album did Elektra, the band's label, censor?

Answer: Two

Elektra imposed censorship on two different recordings from their debut album: "Break On Through (To the Other Side)" and "The End". On "Break On Through" they edited out the phrase "She get high". On "The End", Jim Morrison says profanities over and over toward the end of the track. Rather than remove these profanities completely, they buried them in the mix. Unlike the profanity in The Beatles' "Hey Jude", The Doors' profanities are hard to distinguish what Morrison is saying.

In the 1978 mix commissioned for Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece "Apocalypse Now", the profane section is fully audible
10. What is the only studio Doors album to include work by outside bassists on every single track?

Answer: Full Circle

The Doors were rather famous for not having a bassist in the band. Manzark primarly played bass on his keyboard during live concerts. While some outside bassists were employed on previous albums, the last album by the band, "Full Circle", features bassists playing on every single song, which had never happened on a Doors album before.
