Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Judas Priest members played together in a band called Freight prior to becoming Judas Priest?

Answer: Ian Hill & K.K. Downing

Freight was with drummer John Ellis. Al Atkins then joined and brought with him the name Judas Priest, taken from the Bob Dylan song "The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest". Drummer Alan Moore joined in 1971, Rob Halford in 1973 and Glenn Tipton 1974.
2. Which band, named after a Judas Priest song, released the album "Heavy Metal Maniac" in 1983?

Answer: Exciter

Canadian three-piece Exciter are still delivering pounding metal. Pirate-mad Germans Running Wild took the name in 1979, being called Granite Hearts beforehand. Fellow Germans Sinner are still going, despite having got through over twenty members since forming in 1980. Amongst the numerous Tyrants, California's (1978-present) have released three albums of unabashed heavy metal, the best being 1987's "Too Late To Pray".
3. Which Judas Priest song did thrash band Slayer cover in 1988?

Answer: Dissident Aggressor

One of Priest's greatest lyrics, and one of Slayer's best cover versions, the track featured on 1988's "South Of Heaven". A Halford/King Diamond wail contest was evident when Mercyful Fate did "The Ripper" on a Priest tribute album. Brilliant speed metal band Liege Lord started life as a Priest cover band called Deceiver. Don't think anyone has done "Caviar And Meths", or even remembers it.
4. Who does ex-Judas Priest vocalist Tim "Ripper" Owens now sing for (in 2011)?

Answer: Yngwie J. Malmsteen

Rage (named after Priest song?) have been fronted by Peter Peavy since their inception. K.K. Downing has retired and just plays golf. Owens did join Iced Earth in 2003, but got the boot when the original vocalist came back... He's been singing for Yngwie since 2008, he is also in Dio's Disciples, and a cover band called HAIL! with Andreas Kisser, Paul Bostaph, David Ellefson.
5. Which country's flag is Rob Halford kissing on the cover of Halford's "Live Insurrection"?

Answer: Chile

Halford guitarist, Metal Mike Chlasciak, is Polish. Priest got quite patriotic on
"Red, White & Blue", recorded at the "Turbo" sessions but on the rerelease of their other patriotic moment, "British Steel". However, that is an ode to the British flag, not the English one. Halford has lived in the USA for years but has never been caught kissing the stars and stripes.
6. Who was married to Rob Halford's sister?

Answer: Ian Hill (Judas Priest)

Iommi has been married a few times, and was rumoured to have had a fling with Lita Ford. Noddy, like Halford, was born in Walsall, and has been married a couple of times. Glover produced Priest's album "Sin After Sin" when he got kicked out of Deep Purple, but later mocked the band and their style. He is Welsh.
7. Which Judas Priest song made the P.M.R.C.'s "Filthy Fifteen" list of songs they found particularly upsetting?

Answer: Eat Me Alive

Not sure what they took offense to, maybe rhyming "hip" with "rip", or maybe the "force you at gun point, to eat me alive" motif. "Better Than You, Better Than Me" from "Stained Class" got Priest in much more serious trouble when some lads decided it was telling them to blow their faces off by saying "do it". Lord knows what they made of "Ram It Down".
8. What song did Glenn Tipton cover for his debut solo single?

Answer: "Paint It Black" Rolling Stones

Tipton's first album, "Baptizm of Fire" (1997), had guest appearances from Robert Trujillo, Billy Sheehan, Don Airey, and Neil Murray. The second one was released as Tipton, Entwhistle and (Cozy) Powell! Tipton hasn't done much guesting, although he did play with Samantha Fox in 1991. K.K. is a Hendrix devotee. Priest got the name from a Dylan song (albeit inherited). Tim "Ripper" Owens did a great version of "Hey Jude" on "Butchering The Beatles" tribute album.
9. Which NWOBHM band did ex-Judas Priest drummer, Les Binks, play drums for on their debut album?

Answer: Tytan

Formed by ex- Angel Witch members Kevin Riddles(bass) and drummer Dave Dufort (Girlschool's Denise's brother), Tytan released just one album in 1985, even though they split up in 1983. Even more confusingly, founder member, Dufort, didn't play on the album and drumming duties were split between Binks and Simon Wright (AC/DC, Dio, UFO). Jody Turner (Rock Goddess) also helps out with some singing.
10. Who didn't share the lead vocals with Rob Halford on 1985's Hear N' Aid "Stars" benefit for famine in Africa?

Answer: Dee Snider (Twisted Sister)

Halford had the great line in his second verse, "We are shadow, we are light", which he delivered in fine style. He also led the first chorus. Twisted Sister were represented by guitarist Eddie Ojeda, who came out with a cracking solo. The modestly titled "(We're) Stars" was the brainchild of Mr. Modesty himself, Ronnie James Dio, R.I.P.
11. Which of these songs did Judas Priest perform on BBC TV show "The Old Grey Whistle Test"?

Answer: Rocka Rolla

They also did "Dreamer Deceiver". They did the legendary British show in 1975, when they still had a hippy look, K.K. in a particularly embarrassing hat and Rob Halford in flowing, curly locks. The show featured very few heavy bands, the hosts being either smug, arty types or pipe-smoking folkies.
12. How many drummers have Judas Priest had (as of 2011)?

Answer: Nine

In (almost)chronological order they are John Partidge, John Ellis, Alan Moore(1971-1973,1975-1977), Chris Campbell, John Hinch, Les Binks, Simon Phillips, Dave Holland and Scott Travis. Holland is thought of as the "classic" Priest beatmaster. He is currently serving a prison sentence for sexual offences. Although Travis is Priest's longest serving drummer, he has only appeared on five studio albums, compared to Holland's six. Hinch was the first on album with the band.
13. What label was Priest's debut album "Rocka Rolla" originally released on?

Answer: Gull

Now-defunct Gull released the first two Judas Priest albums. Priest were undoubtedly the biggest band on the label, although Gull did release Thor's "Keep The Dogs Out" in the UK. When Halford left Priest he formed Fight and signed with Epic, releasing two albums.
14. Which of these artists haven't Judas Priest covered as of 2011?

Answer: The Yardbirds

Priest were apparently influenced by The Yardbirds, but they never covered their songs. Controversial "Better By You, Better Than Me" was originally by English hard rock band, Spooky Tooth. Priest did "Johhny B. Goode" on 1988's "Ram It Down". The Gun had a hit with "Race With The Devil" in 1968, and Priest covered it during the "Stained Class" sessions, only releasing it with the rerelease of "Sin After Sin".
15. Which Priest album was the first to be recorded outside the U.K.?

Answer: Point Of Entry

Already on "Sad Wings Of Destiny" the Priest ventured out of England, to Wales. "Point of Entry" was the first of three recorded in Ibizia, Spain. "Angel Of Retribution" is the only album to be (partly) recorded in the USA, although they have recorded in Holland, France, Denmark, and the Bahamas. "British Steel" was, obviously, recorded in England.
