Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Number ten: The song's title is "Hold Me Now". These British kids were definitely not from a multiple birth. Name the group at number ten.

Answer: Thompson Twins

There were no twins in the group. In fact, none of them were actually related. The group was made up by Alannah Currie, Tom Baily, and Joe Leeway. The name came from a comic strip with two bumbling detectives called "Thompson and Thompson". Eventually Baily and Currie had a child together, but no twins!

The song was the first single from the groups album "Into the Gap". The single reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA, and it peaked at number four on the UK Singles chart.
2. Number nine: "The Killing Moon" was done by a group from the UK. There were no carrots or cotton-tails in this group despite the name. Who is this group?

Answer: Echo and the Bunnymen

The song is from the album "Ocean Rain". It reached number nine on the UK singles, though it wasn't played on mainstream radio here in the US. Thanks to KROQ and college radio, the song could be heard across the "pond".
3. Number eight: The song's title is "Rebel Yell". The singer of the number eight song is from the UK, not Alabama. Who is this singer with a rebel yell?

Answer: Billy Idol

The song is off the album of the same name. Interestingly, the song was released in the UK in 1983, and officially in the US in 1985. KROQ was playing it often in 1984, probably off an import record as they often did.

Billy Idol was also in the British punk band Generation X.
4. Number seven: The song "Ladykiller" was done by a band whose name sounds like they would throw rocks through your window or "egg" your house. Which group did the number seven song on KROQ's list?

Answer: The Vandals

The song is off the album "When in Rome Do as the Vandals". They were from Huntington Beach, California. The song has some strange lyrics featuring characters "Mr. Playboy, "Sir Weasel", "Poppin' Snake", and "Mr. Cool".
5. Number six: "Two Tribes" is a song by a British group, not one from California. Who did the number six song?

Answer: Frankie Goes to Hollywood

The song was released as a single on ZTT records in the UK and later put on the album "Welcome to the Pleasuredome". The song was inspired by a line from the movie "Mad Max 2": "when two great warrior tribes go to war".
6. Number five: the song in this position is called "Erotic City" by a Minneapolis based artist with a royal name. Name this "purple" artist.

Answer: Prince

The song was the B-side of "Let's Go Crazy". It was typical of KROQ to play a flip side of a record over the top 40 hit, as is the case here. When Prince gave the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction speech for Parliament-Funkadelic, he mentioned that a concert he saw of theirs inspired the song "Erotic City".

The Kings of Leon are from Tennessee, not Minneapolis. Queen Latifah was not recording in 1984. George Duke was an American Jazz pop artist.
7. Number four: The song is titled "Why?". What British group whose name has tempo did the song at number four?

Answer: Bronski Beat

The song was featured on the album "Age of Consent". The group were one of the first groups to openly embrace the gay culture and the issue of "gay bashing", as in this song. The song reached number six on the UK singles chart, though it did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA.
8. Number three: "Pride(In the Name of Love)" was recorded by an Irish group with an edge. Which group did this song?

Answer: U2

The song was on the album "The Unforgettable Fire". U2 recorded this song as a tribute to the late American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. It was rated number 388 in 2004 on Rolling Stone magazine's Top 500 Songs of All-time list.
9. Number two: The runner-up on KROQ's list is "Tenderness". What group, fronted by former English Beat members, performed this song?

Answer: General Public

Dave Wakeling and Rankin' Roger were the lead vocalists for both the English Beat and General Public. It was on the album "All the Rage". While it is number two on KROQ's list, it peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and only number 95 on the UK Singles chart.
10. Number one: the song that topped the list is "Relax", the second song on the 1984 KROQ list by this group. Which group that spawned a t-shirt craze did the number one song?

Answer: Frankie Goes to Hollywood

"Relax", from the album "Welcome to the Pleasuredome", lead to a huge t-shirt craze in the USA and UK in particular. Young fans were seen at their concerts wearing t-shirts that read "Frankie Says Relax" or just "Relax" en masse. The controversial nature of the song - band member Mark O'Toole was quoted on the album liner notes as saying "... we used to pretend it was about motivation, but really it was about shagging" - led to it initially being banned by the BBC. All this did was help it eventually reach number one on the UK Singles chart.

It eventually peaked at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 early 1985.
