In 1964 Allen Collins and Gary Rossington formed a group called My Backyard. After a few months the band added Leon Wilkeson and Billy Powell and changed their name to Lynyrd Skynyrd.
2. What year did the tragic plane crash occur in?

Answer: 1977

Carrying the band between shows from Greenville, SC to LSU in Baton Rouge, LA, the chartered plane crashed near a forest in McComb, Mississippi.

Answer: Ronnie Van Zant, Cassie Gaines and Steve Gaines

The crash killed Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, vocalist Cassie Gaines and the pilot and copilot of the plane. Other band members were also injured. Artimus Pyle crawled out of the plane with several broken ribs, and then he ran nearly a mile to a farmhouse to try to get help.

The farmer "on first seeing the wild-haired blood- and mud-encrusted drummer babbling incoherently" greeted him with a shotgun blast to his shoulder. The blast was not fatal.
