Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the original drummer's name?

Answer: Bob Burns

Yes, Burns was drummer beginning in 1964 until he quit and was replaced by Artimus Pyle in 1974. He was there when the band started up, left the group and was replaced by Rickey Medlocke for a short period of time, then re-joined just to make it for the first album.
2. Featuring Ed King on bass instead of guitar to cover for Leon Wilkeson, what was Lynyrd Skynyrd's first album titled?

Answer: (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd)

As Bob Burns had just re-joined the band, Leon Wilkeson quit--right before the first album '(Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd)' was released. The album featured key songs, such as 'Simple Man', 'Gimme Three Steps', and the most famous song of all, 'Free Bird'.
3. What odd connection did Steve Gaines have to Ed King?

Answer: They were born on the same exact day.

On September 14, 1949, both Steven Earl Gaines and Edward C. King were born. Both of these men helped write signature songs for Lynyrd Skynyrd, including 'Sweet Home Alabama', 'Saturday Night Special', 'Whiskey Rock-a-Roller', 'Workin' for MCA (All King's Helpings)', 'I Know a Little' (written by Steve), and 'You Got That Right' (actually featuring him singing with Ronnie Van Zant).
4. What terrible incident happened to Lynyrd Skynyrd on October 20, 1977?

Answer: Their plane crash en route to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

I could drone on for hours accounting the events of the crash, but rather I'll shorten it. The plane crashed in Gilsburg, Mississippi. Ronnie (lead singer), Steve (one of their really good guitarists), Cassie (backup), the manager, and a few more were on the airplane. The pilots both died in the crash.
5. On January 28, 2009, which original band member died?

Answer: Billy Powell

Looking fatter and older than ever, Billy Powell called 911 after midnight because of a heart attack. He was 56 years old. Powell, in my opinion, was the best pianist in the entire world.
6. What did Allen Collins, arguably the best guitarist in the world, die from?

Answer: Chronic pneumonia- a complication of the paralysis due to a car crash

Possibly the most terrible day in history (in my opinion anyway) was January 23, 1990. Allen died that day from chronic pneumonia. I wish I could have seen him in concert, but he was just a bit before my time. He had a great life, but slowly lost everything he used to be able to do easily.
7. Where did the name 'Lynyrd Skynyrd' come from?

Answer: The name was a mocking dedication to a high-school gym teacher.

The name was dedicated to a high-school gym teacher--in a ridiculing way. Mr. Leonard Skinner disapproved of the long hair the band wore, so he had them whipped. After all of that, the band named themselves after him, but changed Leonard to Lynyrd, and Skinner to Skynyrd. The odd Ys are tribute to the Byrds.
8. Ronnie Van Zant's brothers are well-known musicians. What are their names?

Answer: Johnny and Donnie

The brothers were named Ronnie, Johnny, and Donnie. It seems impossible, but it's not. Ask one of them--they'll tell you the same thing that I did. Ronnie's dead, Johnny's famous, and who knows where Donnie went. Yeah, just stick with my answer--it's true.

Actually, Donnie started the band 38 Special, while Johnny became the lead singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd.
9. What was Gary Rossington's main guitar, and what was the guitar that he only used on 'Free Bird'?

Answer: Bernice Gibson Les Paul and a red Gibson SG

Rossington changed from an SG without a vibrato arm (whammy bar) to, you guessed it, an SG with a vibrato arm. The Berniece is a yellow-ee, orange-ee Gibson Les Paul, which actually became famous.
10. What is the favored and the most well-known solo in 'Free Bird'?

Answer: Allen Collins' guitar solo

Wha' 'chu wanna hear?

'Free Bird'! The song was released in November 1974. It went to number nineteen on the Billboard Hot 100 chart the next year.

If you own an electric guitar, plug it in 'cause here's how you play the opening lick of the solo:

(/ = slide from neck)

Sorry for all of you non-guitarists out there, but I had to give that out to the people that request it.
