Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Elton John
Answer: "Simple Life"
The 90s was the decade in which Elton finally achieved his first solo UK number one with "Sacrifice". He had the biggest selling single of all time with the Princess Diana tribute "Candle In The Wind 1997" and released this track from "The One" album which peaked at number 44.
Other singles from the album were the title track as well as "The Last Song" and a duet with Eric Clapton, "Runaway Train".
2. Wet Wet Wet
Answer: "Make It Tonight"
The Wets released this as the first single from the "High On The Happy Side" album and it only reached number 37, which was better than the follow up, "Put The Light On" which only got to number 56. Order was resumed with the third release from the album though, when "Goodnight Girl" hit number one and remained there for four weeks.
3. Aqua
Answer: "Good Morning Sunshine"
Danish/Norwegian band Aqua managed three UK number one singles between 1997 and 1998 ("Barbie Girl", "Doctor Jones" and "Turn Back Time") but by the turn of the decade their star was waning and this song, their last UK hit of the 90s, only reached number 18. Their last UK hit was in 2000 although they continue to be popular in Scandinavia.
4. Cher
Answer: "Not Enough Love In The World"
Cher had two UK solo number ones in the 90s with "The Shoop Shoop Song" and "Believe" as well as a number one with the song "Love Can Build A Bridge", recorded with Chrissie Hynde, Neneh Cherry and Eric Clapton, but this track from her 1996 album "It's a Man's World" didn't fare so well, peaking at number 31.
The song is a cover of a Don Henley song, which he allegedly wrote about his relationship with Stevie Nicks.
5. Whitney Houston
Answer: "My Name Is Not Susan"
Released in 1991, just a year before mega smash "I Will Always Love You", this track from the "I'm Your Baby Tonight" album only reached number 29 in UK. The video for the song highlighted Houston's admiration for Alfred Hitchcock with similarities to the movie "Vertigo".
6. Celine Dion
Answer: "Misled"
Dion's cover of the Jennifer Rush track "The Power Of Love" sold over 150,000 units in UK, and reached number four in the charts, so by comparison, this follow up track, also from the "The Colour of My Love" album was a flop, only getting to number 15. Of course, just three years later she would break all of her sales records with the theme song to "Titanic", "My Heart Will Go On".
7. Babylon Zoo
Answer: "Animal Army"
"Spaceman" was the band's first single and it reached number one, spending five weeks there, partly due to it being used in a TV commercial for Levi jeans. This was the follow up single and probably due to the lack of heavy airplay associated with "Spaceman", it didn't fare as well, only reaching number 17. The band released four more singles before calling it quits in 2000.
8. East 17
Answer: "Gold"
East 17 managed an amazing 12 top ten hits between 1992 and 1998, including the platinum selling Christmas number one "Stay Another Day", but this 1992 release only got to number 28, although it did hit the number one spot in Israel.
9. No Doubt
Answer: "Sunday Morning"
"Sunday Morning" became the band's first record to chart in the UK after their number one single, "Don't Speak" and although it fared better than the two releases after that track, it still only got to number 50. The song is about the relationship breakup of band members Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal and was written by them with Stefani's brother Eric.
10. Simply Red
Answer: "Remembering The First Time"
"Stars" was by a long way, Simply Red's most successful album, but never yielded a UK number one single, whereas the follow up, "Life" was nowhere near as successful but gave them a number one with "Fairground". It also gave them this minor hit which reached number 22 in UK although it did go top ten in Netherlands and Iceland.
