Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Formed in New Jersey and named after its lead singer, which heavy metal hair band from the early 80s can be considered "Wanted: Dead or Alive"?

Answer: Bon Jovi

Consisting of Jon Bongiovi (aka "Jon Bon Jovi"), Tico Torres, David Bryan, Phil X, Hugh McDonald, and formerly Richie Sambora, Bon Jovi has been screaming through the speakers since 1983. "Slippery When Wet" (1986) was the album that launched them into the stratosphere, followed by "New Jersey" in 1988. Solo albums from members came about in early 90s before the boys re-formed (with new haircuts!) and re-launched to a newer, younger audience. Whilst their sound and feel has softened since the 2000s, Bon Jovi were still touring and remained popular more than 30 years after their first release.

Question by lones78
2. Which heavy metal hair band had an "Appetite for Destruction" in the mid-late 1980s?

Answer: Guns N' Roses

Guns N' Roses was the result of an amalgamation between LA Guns and Hollywood Rose in the mid 1980s. Going from strength to strength in their first few years, Guns N' Roses cemented their place in heavy metal history with one of the best selling debut albums of all time - "Appetite for Destruction". Four years later "Use your Illusion" (I and II) debuted at number one and two on the Billboard 200 and "Chinese Democracy" (2008) was considered one of the most expensive rock albums to be produced at the time.
Guns N' Roses was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the first year they were eligible for the honour, 2012.

Question by lones78
3. Which heavy metal hair band got "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich" in the late 1980s early 1990s?

Answer: Warrant

Warrant debuted well with "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich" and continued their success in the mid 1990s. Warrant had a tough time when grunge came on the scene but they managed to survive tours, spats, a change of sound and members, as well as the changing face of music through the late 90s and into the 2000s. Despite having over 20 members in the band (not at the one time), Warrant were still releasing music 30 years after forming in 1984.

Question by lones78
4. "Look What the Cat Dragged In" was their debut album. Which heavy metal hair band has sold over 50 million albums world wide?

Answer: Poison

Bret Michaels, Rikki Rockett, Bobby Dall and CC DeVille are Poison. Forming in the early 1980s Poison's debut album "Look What the Cat Dragged In" was such a success that the one intended single was not enough for the appetite of listeners. Poison's motto "work hard, play hard" saw them become involved in lawsuits, addictions, brawling and infighting. Whilst still in the spotlight in the 2010s, Poison never managed to re-create their success of the 80s and 90s.

Question by lones78
5. Another heavy metal hair band from New Jersey, who suffered "Big Hits and Nasty Cuts"?

Answer: Twisted Sister

Although forming in the early 1970s, Twisted Sister didn't achieve mainstream popularity until the mid 1980s and were supported in their tours around this time by a recently-formed Metallica. The band worked with other big names such as Alice Cooper, Brian Setzer and Billy Joel before their separation in the 90s.
Twisted Sister were active from the early 1970s with a decade break in the 1990s and reuniting in 1997, 2001 and 2002. They announced their final tour in 2016 after the deaths of band members in 2012 and 2015.
"Big Hits and Nasty Cuts" was their first compilation album. Studio albums include "Under the Blade" and "Stay Hungry".

Question by lones78
6. "Tales from the Strip" would probably tell us that Tracii Guns first formed which heavy metal hair band in the early 1980s?

Answer: LA Guns

Although Tracii Guns ended up as the "Guns" part of Guns N' Roses, he first formed LA Guns with Michael Jagosz, Ole Beich and Rob Gardner in 1983. By 1985 Tracii Guns had left Guns N' Roses and reformed LA Guns with a new bunch of musicians not from the original list. Plenty of lineup changes over the next few years and the introduction of grunge onto the music scene saw the wasting away of LA Guns from the heavy metal scene. Two versions of the band spent the 2000s competing against each other with a reunion between the two in 2016. For the full story of who, what, where and when, and to make sense of the entire story, we suggest you visit the LA Guns Wikipedia page or of course their official website.

Question by lones78
7. Mach 1 and Little Women were the original names for this heavy metal hair band in the early 1970s during their formative years. It is unclear if they were "Terrified", their "Metal Health" was affected or their "Condition Critical"....

Answer: Quiet Riot

Quiet Riot's album "Metal Health" (1983) is known as the first heavy metal album to to the Billboard album chart. Another band to suffer from multiple members, breakdowns and reunions, Quiet Riot opened several shows for Van Halen throughout the 1970s, helping to secure them a record deal. Their first two albums were only released in Japan and their first breakup resulted in founding member Randy Rhoads joining Ozzy Osborne before his death in 1982. More lawsuits, fights and reformations followed in subsequent years yet there was still a steady stream of albums and music released to ensure this band were still going strong more than 40 years after they first formed.

Question by lones78
8. "Breaking the Chains", "Tooth and Nail", and "Under Lock and Key" were early albums from which heavy metal hair band?

Answer: Dokken

One would wonder if the metal bands of the 70s, 80s and 90s had run out of material and/or money at some stage because the amount of reunions, breakups and reformations is astounding within this genre. Dokken are no exception with a split in the early 90s, reformation in the late 90s and reunion in the late 2010s and again in 2016. Band members have appeared on various tribute albums, in video clips, commercials and their music has appeared in movies. Dokken were first known as Airborn and played in clubs around the Los Angeles area.

Question by lones78
9. It's possible that New Jersey is a "Slave to the Grind". Can you name yet another heavy metal hair band hailing from this area of the US?

Answer: Skid Row

Rather late into the heavy metal hair scene, Skid Row formed in 1986 securing their first record deal in 1988, with the help of Bon Jovi's Jon Bongiovi. "Skid Row" was the self-titled debut album and did well with two top-ten singles and the band supporting Bon Jovi's The Jersey Syndicate tour. They also appeared with Motley Crue, White Lion and Aerosmith in the late 1980s before creating controversy with behaviour that would not be tolerated today. Of course a change of lineup and reformation happened in the 1990s with the band plodding on and still touring in the mid 2010s.

Question by lones78
10. Ian Fraser Kilmister, better known under his alias Lemmy, was the frontman of which Metal group?

Answer: Motörhead

Lemmy Kilmister (1945-2015) started his career in the sixties with various rock bands, including Hawkwind. In 1975 Lemmy founded Motörhead with Larry Wallis on electric guitar and Lucas Fox as the drummer.
Motörhead scored big hits in the Eighties with albums such as "Ace of Spades", "Overkill" and "No Sleep 'til Hammersmith".
Lucas Fox left the band in 1975, and the drums were then banged by (among others) Phil Taylor and Mikkey Dee.
Larry Wallis (guitar) left the group in 1976, and some of the replacing guitarists were "Fast" Eddie Clarke and Phil Campbell.
Lemmy Kilmister was the only member who played for Motörhead during the full 40 years the band performed. A few days after Lemmy's death, Mikkey Dee and Phil Campbell announced Motörhead will never again appear on stage nor make any new records.
