Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fittingly, the song that is considered the start of the "Rock and Roll Era" on the Billboard charts was sung by a Bill. What was this 1955 hit by Bill Haley and the Comets that appeared on the soundtrack of "The Blackboard Jungle"?

Answer: Rock Around the Clock

"Rock Around the Clock" originally charted in 1954 as the B-side to "Thirteen Women (And Only One Man in Town)." It returned the following year when it appeared in "The Blackboard Jungle," and the rest was history.
2. "Bill, I love you so, I always will" is the opening line of this song that topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks in 1969. What was this pleading tune written by Laura Nyro and recorded by the 5th Dimension?

Answer: Wedding Bell Blues

Nyro missed out on making the Hot 100 with her original recording of the song in 1966. It ended up being one of two number one hits by the 5th Dimension, the other being "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In."
3. Two members of the 5th Dimension, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr., ended up marrying in real life and recording a duet that topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977. What was its somewhat wordy title?

Answer: You Don't Have to Be a Star (To Be in My Show)

Marilyn and Billy celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary in 2012.
4. Which of the following songs was not a Billboard Hot 100 top five hit for Bill Withers?

Answer: Let's Stay Together

"Let's Stay Together" was a number one hit for Al Green. Bill Withers made a return to the top spot of sorts in 1996 when his song "Grandma's Hands" was sampled in the Blackstreet smash "No Diggity."
5. Steely Dan reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," but another artist matched that peak in 1985 with a different song directing the command "Don't Lose My Number" to someone named Billy. Who was this singer who also recorded several hits with Genesis?

Answer: Phil Collins

"Don't Lose My Number" was one of four songs off Phil Collins' "No Jacket Required" album to reach the top ten on the Hot 100.
6. Bobbie Gentry topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks with "Ode to Billie Joe," in which the title character commits suicide by jumping off the Tallahatchie Bridge. He is also seen throwing something off the bridge before he dies. What is it?

Answer: We never find out

Gentry never reveals what was thrown in the song, and it ended up being the subject of much speculation when the song became a hit. Gentry herself said that the people who were so curious about it were missing the point of the song, but the 1976 movie "Ode to Billy Joe" (starring Robby Benson) did provide an answer to the question. The actual Tallahatchie Bridge collapsed in 1972.
7. Billie Joe is the name of the lead singer for Green Day, which reached the number two spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2005 with "Boulevard of Broken Dreams." What is his last name, shared with a famous astronaut?

Answer: Armstrong

Billie Joe Armstrong made the news more recently in 2012 when he went on a rant while performing at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas.
8. Bill Medley topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1987 with "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," a duet with Jennifer Warnes. He was also half of a duo that had multiple hits in the 1960s and 1970s. What was this team with smashes like "Just Once in My Life" and "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration"?

Answer: The Righteous Brothers

Perhaps most famous for "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," the Righteous Brothers made a return to the Hot 100 in 1990 when two competing versions of their song "Unchained Melody" charted in the wake of the success of the movie "Ghost." The other Righteous Brother, Bobby Hatfield, died in 2003 from a cocaine overdose.
9. Sadly, this artist's last song to debut on the Billboard Hot 100, "Million Dollar Bill," only managed to reach number 100. Who was this singer who recorded multiple number one hits, including "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)," before her 2012 death?

Answer: Whitney Houston

Although it was her last song to debut, "Million Dollar Bill" wasn't Whitney Houston's last visit to the charts. Former number one hits "I Will Always Love You," "How Will I Know," and "Greatest Love of All" all re-entered the Hot 100 after her death.
10. With whom did Billy Paul have "a thing going on" in a 1972 Billboard Hot 100 chart topper?

Answer: Mrs. Jones

There was something happening there, but apparently Mr. Jones didn't know what it was. Billy Paul never returned to the top of the Hot 100 after "Me and Mrs. Jones" struck platinum.
