Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On this album cover seven goats are attacking five guys. The goats are clearly winning, as the guys are looking scared and retreating. What classic sounds are hidden beneath these shocking scenes?

Answer: "Pet Sounds" - The Beach Boys

As per usual Beach Boy Mike Love lets the others do all the work. While the Wilson brothers and Al Jardine are keeping the goats at bay, the best they can, he's hiding behind them. What a wuss.
2. On this cover the singer is walking towards the left, with strange spots on his face. There appears to be an old lady growing out of his back. What album is it?

Answer: "After the Goldrush" - Neil Young

On the inside of the gatefold sleeve you can see Neil Young lying depressed on a sofa, because his guitars are bent out of shape.
3. Inside a black frame three band members are looking straight at you. Only the lead guitarist/singer didn't hear the photographer say: "Look at the birdie", and kind of looks up, gazing into the distance. What classic album cover is this?

Answer: "Marquee Moon" - Television

Television was one of the key bands of the New York punk scene, that formed around the legendary CBGB's club. At first the band had featured Richard Hell, but he and lead guitarist/singer Tom Verlaine stopped seeing eye to eye. So Hell formed The Heartbreakers with former New York Dolls guitar player Johnny Thunders. And then they fell out.

Then he formed his own band, where he could be the leader: Richard Hell & the Voidoids. His looks - ripped t-shirts, safety pins - also inspired London based entrepreneur Malcolm McLaren.

But that's another story.
4. On this sleeve there's a black and white picture of the singer doing a sort of cramped hand-jive. Then again, he could also be auditioning for a remake of the classic vampire flick "Nosferatu - Eine Symphonie des Grauens". What is it?

Answer: "The Idiot" - Iggy Pop

It is generally assumed that David Bowie saved Iggy Pop from the gutter three times. The first time was when he produced the Stooges album "Raw Power" (1973). The second time he co-wrote and -produced Iggy Pop's comeback albums "The Idiot" and "Lust for Life" (both 1977). And a third time when he made "Blah Blah Blah" (1986) with Pop.

Another way of looking at it though, is that Bowie co-opted Pop's cred and cool for his own benefit. Anyway, it's been a fruitful partnership. Except for "Blah Blah Blah" which is overproduced in a horrible 80s kinda way, making it virtually unlistenable.
5. On this sleeve there's a picture of the singer taking a picture of us. He seems to be signalling for us to move a little to the left. Or is it the right? What is it?

Answer: "This Year's Model" - Elvis Costello and the Attractions

In July 1980 Melody Maker writer Allan Jones was in Montreux, covering the festival where bands like The Specials, Rockpile and Costello and his Attractions are performing. After the concerts the bands are all hanging out in a hotel room doing cocaine, and so is Jones of course as he's a ligger of worldwide renown. Costello is in a bad mood.

He doesn't like the press much anyway, so he's constantly getting on Jones' case, asking him if he's taking notes of everything. At one point he asks him to leave, in a slightly unpolite way.

Then a photographer reaches into his bag. "If you get a camera out of that bag," Costello says, "I'll break your fingers." The photographer holds up a pack of cigarettes and smiles weakly. At 6am manager Jake Riviera is standing at the window.

The sun's coming up over the lake. "The lake looks lovely this morning," he says. "Yeah," says Elvis Costello, standing next to him, "I think I might go for a walk on it later."
6. There's a picture of the head of the lead singer on this sleeve. One of the band members seems to be his eye. Two other band members are looking a bit confused on the right side of the sleeve. One of them seems to be a dwarf. What classic sleeve is this?

Answer: "The Doors" - The Doors

I think former stand up comedian Denis Leary said it best when he said: "We need a two and a half hour movie about the Doors? Folks, no we don't. I can sum it up for you in five seconds, ok. I'm drunk. I'm nobody. I'm drunk. I'm famous. I'm drunk. I'm dead. There's the whole movie, ok! Big fat dead guy in a bath tub, there's your title for you."
7. A girl with a big afro hairdo is buried in the sand. Only her head remains free. She doesn't seem very pleased with this state of affairs. What record sleeve is this?

Answer: "Maggot Brain" - Funkadelic

In 2003 "Maggot Brain" was ranked number 486 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Which shows how much they know, cos it's actually the second best album ever.
8. There's a picture on this sleeve of a man who's just been to the hairdresser's. He's obviously not very happy with the result, cos he's looking in a mirror and smashing it to pieces. What record sleeve is this?

Answer: "Damaged" - Black Flag

Most of Black Flags record sleeves - apart from this one - and concert posters were designed by Raymond Pettibon. His real name is Raymond Ginn. He's the brother of Greg Ginn, guitar player and leader of Black Flag and owner of the SST record label. Pettibon also designed record sleeves for Minutemen, Sonic Youth and Dim Stars.
9. On a black background there's a drawing of a razor blade. The blade is red and white. What classic record sleeve is this?

Answer: "Haunted Dancehall" - Sabres of Paradise

Andrew Weatherall is an English DJ who worked with DJ Paul Oakenfold on the infamous Happy Mondays remix for the track "Hallelujah" (1988), which kickstarted the 'Madchester Rave On' movement. On his own he created Primal Scream's first hit "Loaded" (1990), a remix of their track "I'm Losing More Than I'll Ever Have".

In 1992 he formed Sabres of Paradise, with Jagz Kooner and Gary Burns. The classic album "Haunted Dancehall" was released in 1994.
10. This sleeve has two versions. On one there's a sculpture with some puppets with their sexual organs on display. On the censored version there's just the text of the 'First Amendment' printed. What sleeve is this?

Answer: "Ritual de lo Habitual" - Jane's Addiction

The sculpture was made by singer Perry Farrell. The puppets weren't even doing any lewd things, but still some retail chains refused to sell the album. Thus the sleeve with the First Amendment, guaranteeing free speech.
