Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 91st position on the chart, what is the 1972 rock song with these lyrics: "Well we can't salute ya, can't find a flag if that don't suit ya that's a drag"?

Answer: School's Out

"School's Out" by Alice Cooper takes me right back to my childhood. This was THE summer hit of 1972 and I can remember us school kids chanting along with glee. This was in the days, of course, when summer (and school holidays) seemed to go on forever...
2. In 92nd place is "The Sun Always Shines on T.V." This a-ha song was issued in 1985. What nationality were a-ha?

Answer: Norwegian

"The Sun Always Shines On T.V." was the second successful single from the album "Hunting High And Low". The single reached number one in the UK but only managed number 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
3. Coming in at 93 on the chart this song was number 1 in the UK, US and Canada. Which disco hit begins "Listen to the ground: there is movement all around. There is something going down and I can feel it"?

Answer: Night Fever

Written and performed by The Bee Gees, "Night Fever" appeared on the soundtrack album for "Saturday Night Fever". This two record album is the biggest selling soundtrack of all time and has gone platinum 15 times.

All of the songs in the question are tracks on the album performed by the Bee Gees.
4. At 94 in the chart is another disco classic. Recorded by Gloria Gaynor, which song has been adopted as both a female and a gay anthem and is a regular on the karaoke circuit?

Answer: I Will Survive

"I Will Survive" could possibly be the musical version of marmite. Chances are you either love it or hate it.

It is commonly regarded as one of the greatest dance songs of all time and is easily Gloria Gaynor's best selling single.

Hard to imagine now as it has become such an iconic record but it was originally the B side to a song called "Substitute". DJs began playing the other side and the record was re-pressed with "I Will Survive" on the A side.

The original version was number one in 1979. A remixed version got to number five in the UK in 1993.
5. At joint 95th position in the chart is a 1969 record which was a number one hit in both the UK and the US. Which Rolling Stones single begins "I met a gin soaked bar-room queen in Memphis"?

Answer: Honky Tonk Women

The Stones recorded two versions of "Honky Tonk Women". The album "Let It Bleed" has a country version and the rockier electric version most of us are more familiar with was issued as the single. The lyrics of the two versions are slightly different.

The intro to the single is played on a cow bell.
6. Sharing 95th place this Hollies song from 1969 reached number one when it was re-released in the '80s. Which song recorded by them was used in a commercial for Miller Lite in 1988?

Answer: He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother

The Hollies made "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" a hit, but it has been covered by many other people including Neil Diamond and Bill Medley. The Osmonds often sing this in concert (no surprise there then).
7. In 97th position, which Beatles song includes the lyrics "You say yes, I say no. You say stop and I say go, go, go"?

Answer: Hello Goodbye

"Hello Goodbye" is the lowest placed of the 14 Beatles singles in the Top 100.

It topped the charts in both the UK and the United States. In the UK it was number one for seven weeks and was the Christmas record of 1967.

Of the two songs considered for the single, "Hello Goodbye" was considered the more commercial and "I Am The Walrus" was relegated to the B side.
8. At number 98 in the chart is the Motown classic hit "The Tears Of A Clown". Who took this song to number one in 1970?

Answer: Smokey Robinson and The Miracles

"The Tears Of A Clown" was a number one on both sides of the Atlantic.

The music for the song was written by Stevie Wonder and Hank Cosby. Smokey wrote the lyrics.

The Miracles (without Smokey) had a hit several years later with "Love Machine", a funky little number that I remember with fondness from my teenage years.

In the '80s Sheffield band ABC paid homage to Smokey Robinson with the song "When Smokey Sings". Another song which forms part of the soundtrack to my life.
9. In joint 99th place is this 1979 number one. What song includes these lyrics? "A year has passed since I wrote my note, but I should have known this right from the start. Only hope can keep me together. Love can mend your life but love can break your heart."

Answer: Message In A Bottle

"Message In A Bottle" by The Police was released in 1979 from their second album "Regatta de Blanc".

Although it was their first UK number one it was only a minor hit in the United States.

The other answers are all Police singles. "Can't Stand Losing You" was a hit for them earlier that same year.
10. Sharing 99th position, this song was top of the UK charts for five weeks in 1983. The video featured the singer/songwriter as an auto mechanic and his then girlfriend played the title character. What is the song?

Answer: Uptown Girl

"Uptown Girl" was written about Billy's relationship with supermodel Christie Brinkley, who he married in 1985. They divorced in 1994.

A cover version of "Uptown Girl" was released by Westlife as a Comic Relief charity single. Not surprisingly it got to the number one spot again and was the sixth best selling single of 2001 in the UK.
