Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What song at number 70 in the chart includes the lyrics: "I got flowers in the spring. I got you to wear my ring"?

Answer: I Got You Babe

"I Got You Babe" by Sonny and Cher reached number one in the UK and the US in 1965.

A cover by UB40 & Chrissie Hynde topped the UK charts 20 years later in 1985.

Of the other possible answers provided, "Baby Don't Go" and "But You're Mine" were other singles released by Sonny and Cher. "It Ain't Me Babe" is a Bob Dylan song.
2. At 69 in the chart, what is the most popular homegrown Christmas record in the UK and includes the lead singer screaming a long drawn out "It's Christmas"?

Answer: Merry Xmas Everybody

"Merry Xmas Everybody" by Slade was the UK Christmas record of 1973 and has been re-released a number of times since.

Glam rock and Christmas songs went together well.

I suspect that it is almost impossible to avoid hearing it in the UK at least once every year. It is played on the radio, on the TV, in the shops, and even in lifts. Although I love it, by November my fondness is wearing thin.
3. In 68th position in the chart, a glam rock classic. What 1971 T Rex song contains the lyrics: "Well you're dirty and sweet, clad in black don't look back and I love you. You're dirty and sweet, oh yeah"?

Answer: Get It On

Known as "Bang A Gong (Get It On)" in the States, "Get It On" spent four weeks at number one in the UK in 1971. It reached number ten on the US Billboard Hot 100.

In 1985 The Power Station issued a cover version. This did not do so well in the UK but reached number nine in the US.
4. At 67 in the chart, who took "Going Underground" straight to the number one spot in March 1980?

Answer: The Jam

The Jam were riding high in the UK in the late 1970s/ early 1980s and "Going Underground" was the first of three singles to go straight to number one for them.

Surprisingly, given the esteem Paul Weller is held in these days as "The Modfather", this is the only Jam song to make it into the top 100.

The Clash and The Boomtown Rats were contempories of The Jam. Marmalade were a 60s band.
5. In 66th position on the chart and, coincidentally, released in 1966 what Beatles song begins: "Dear Sir or Madam, will you read my book? It took me years to write, will you take a look"?

Answer: Paperback Writer

"Paperback Writer" was number one in both the UK and US. In the US it reached number one but was then knocked off the top spot by Frank Sinatra's "Strangers In The Night". It reclaimed the number one spot after a week.
6. In 65th position in this chart of UK number ones is the first rock and roll record to top the charts. I thought the artists who recorded this were known as Bill Haley and The Comets, but who according to the record label sang "Rock Around The Clock"?

Answer: Bill Haley & His Comets

Originally released by Bill Hailey & His Comets in 1954, it did not reach the top of the UK charts until the following year, having by then been used behind the opening credits for the film "Blackboard Jungle".

It was used as the theme song for the first two series of the TV show "Happy Days".
7. At 64 in the chart, which 1960 song was Roy Orbison's first major hit in the UK?

Answer: Only The Lonely

"Only The Lonely" was released in May 1960 and spent over six months in the UK charts, with two weeks at number one.

His sound was unique and Roy Orbison influenced many other artists including The Beatles. When Lennon and McCartney first wrote "Please Please Me" they had in mind a slow heavy Orbison type feel. George Martin suggested they speed it up and make it less mournful - which they did.
8. At number 63, which Human League song was the top selling UK single of 1981?

Answer: Don't You Want Me

All the songs given as possible answers were singles from the Human League album "Dare". "Don't You Want Me" was the fourth single taken from it and no-one expected it to be the success that it was.

As well as being the top selling single of 1981, "Don't You Want Me" was the Christmas number one. Rather better, in my opinion, than the ones immediately preceding and succeeding it ("There's No-One Quite Like Grandma" in 1980 and "Save Your Love" in 1982).
9. In 62nd place, which Beatles tune became the title song for their animated full length film and includes the lyrics: "In the town where I was born lived a man who sailed to sea"?

Answer: Yellow Submarine

Amongst all the sound effects on "Yellow Submarine" there is a cash register. This was discovered in the store room at Abbey Road studios. Pink Floyd also recorded at Abbey Road and the same cash register is used on the track "Money" from "Dark Side Of The Moon".
10. At 61 on the chart, which British female singer had a number one hit with "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me"?

Answer: Dusty Springfield

Dusty Springfield was born Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien on April 16 1939 and died on March 2 1999.

She was a wonderful soul singer and went to Memphis to record an album with Atlantic Records. The album included the track "Son Of A Preacher Man".

In the late 1980s she had a resurgance of popularity thanks to her collaborations with The Pet Shop Boys on songs such as "Nothing Has Been Proved" (about the Profumo affair) and "What Have I Done To Deserve This?"
