Answer: I Heard It Through The Grapevine

One of several Motown artists to record "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", Marvin Gaye's version became the most successful. It was released in the US in October 1968 and at the time was Motown's biggest hit. It was number one for three weeks in the UK in 1969.

In the mid 1980s it was re-recorded for an advertising campaign for California raisins.
3. 28th on the list, which 1980s band had a hit with "Come On Eileen"?

Answer: Dexys Midnight Runners

"Come On Eileen" was number one in the UK for four weeks in the summer of 1982, and was the top selling single of the year. It was also a number one in Australia and the US.

It regularly features in 'top 100' lists and is regarded as a one-hit wonder in the US.
4. At 27 on the chart, which Beatles single, released in 1963, was the band's first number one hit in the US?

Answer: I Want To Hold Your Hand

"I Want To Hold Your Hand" was released in the UK in November 1963 and knocked "She Loves You" off the top spot.

The single was scheduled to be released in America in January 1964, just prior to The Beatles first performance on the Ed Sullivan Show. However a DJ on WWDC had a copy shipped over from the UK and began playing it to great audience reaction. As other DJs picked up on it, Capitol decided to release the single early. It was released in December and reached number one on February 1. After seven weeks at the top it was replaced by "She Loves You".
5. At number 26, what song was written by Prince in the 1980s and became a hit for Sinead O'Connor in 1990?

Answer: Nothing Compares 2 U

"Nothing Compares 2 U" was a number one in many countries and went platinum in the UK and US.

Prince originally wrote "Nothing Compares 2 U" for The Family. Sinead O'Connor's manager suggested that she cover it. Her cover is regularly voted in to 'Top 100' lists. It is also well known for the very simple but moving video, which comprised of a tight shot of Sinead's face as she sang the song. Towards the end, Sinead shed a tear or two.

The video won best video at the 1990 MTV awards and was the first video by a female artist to win the video category.

All the suggested answers were written by Prince. "Manic Monday" was a hit for The Bangles. The other two incorrect answers were hits for Prince himself.
6. At number 25 on the list, which David Bowie hit originally released in 1969 features Major Tom, an astronaut who becomes lost in space?

Answer: Space Oddity

"Space Oddity" was originally released in 1969 to coincide with the Apollo 11 moon landings. It reached number 5 in the UK and did not make the US Top 100.

It was re-released in the US in 1973 and reached number 15. In the UK it was number one for two weeks in 1975.

Major Tom was referred to again in Bowie's 1980 hit "Ashes To Ashes" (which also appears in the list of 100 most popular UK number one singles).
7. In 24th position, which Roy Orbison single includes the lyrics: "But wait, what do I see? Is she walking back to me? Yeah, she's walking back to me"?

Answer: Oh, Pretty Woman

"Oh, Pretty Woman" was number one in 1964 in the US and the UK.

It inspired the title for the 1990 Richard Gere/ Julia Roberts film "Pretty Woman" and was featured in the film.
8. In joint 22nd place on the list, in what year was "Maggie May" by Rod Stewart a number one in the UK?

Answer: 1971

"Maggie May" was originally the B-side to "Reason To Believe" but DJs preferred "Maggie May".

It was number one for five weeks in both the UK and US in October 1971.

The song features a mandolin solo, played by Ray Jackson of the group Lindisfarne.
9. Sharing 22nd position is a 1975 release by Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel. What is the correct title of the record?

Answer: Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)

"Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)" was number one in the UK for two weeks in 1975.

Duran Duran often played the song live and their cover is on the B-side of "The Reflex". They altered the title to the more intuitive "Come Up and See Me (Make Me Smile)".
10. At 21 on the list, which 10cc ballad, one of the most covered songs in pop, includes the lyrics: "I keep your picture upon the wall. It hides a nasty stain that's lyin' there. So don't you ask me to give it back. I know you know it doesn't mean that much to me"?

Answer: I'm Not In Love

"I'm Not In Love" was written by 10cc band members Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman. It was a number one in the UK in 1975. In the US it peaked at number two.

The innovative production included a multi-layered choral backing, and whilst the narrator of the song professes that he is not in love this is clearly a love song.

This is one of my favourite love songs. Being a teenager at the time it was first released, and (of course) frequently in and out of love, this fuelled the 'downs' perfectly.
