Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Whole Lotta Love"
Answer: Bonham
John Bonham was the legendary drummer for Led Zeppelin from their formation in 1968 until his untimely death in 1980. "Whole Lotta Love" (1969) was just one of many classic Led Zeppelin tracks, but is well known to many as the chart countdown music used by TV show "Top Of The Pops" between 1970 and 1977, although this was a specially recorded version, done by Alexis Korner's Collective Consciousness Society.
2. "Boris The Spider"
Answer: Entwistle
Voted the greatest bassist of all time in a "Rolling Stone" magazine poll in 2011, Entwistle is most famous for his contribution to the distinctive sound of The Who, for whom he played from 1964 until his death in 2002, although he had actually been playing with fellow Who members Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend in The Detours since 1962. "Boris The Spider" (1966) was a Who track written by Entwistle, and although it wasn't released as a single, it was a staple of the band's live shows for many years, appearing on the live albums, "Who's Last" (1984), "Blues To The Bush" (2000), "Live From Toronto" (2006) and "View from a Backstage Pass" (2007)
3. "Imagine"
Answer: Lennon
John Lennon was of course a member of The Beatles, but is just as fondly remembered for some of his excellent solo work, such as "Imagine" (1971) which although not originally released as a single in his native UK, went to number one when it was released posthumously in 1981.
In 2004, "Imagine" was voted the third greatest song of all time by "Rolling Stone" magazine, beaten only by "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (1965) by the Rolling Stones and "Like A Rolling Stone" (1965) by Bob Dylan.
4. "Lazy Bird"
Answer: Coltrane
John Coltrane was surely one of the finest "free jazz" saxophonists ever and helped greatly with making this unconventional genre of the music popular. He died aged 40 in 1967 and the fact that his is the standard that others still aspire to, speaks volumes about the man. "Lazy Bird" is a track from his 1958 "Blue Train" album and contains some of the best examples of "Coltrane changes" or the cycles of chord substitution which epitomise "free jazz".
5. "Your Body Is A Wonderland"
Answer: Mayer
John Mayer is an incredibly talented guitarist and songwriter who is capable of performing several genres of music. He is well known for his acoustic shows and his rock gigs, but has also formed The John Mayer Trio, who specialise in blues music and in 2015, he joined the band Dead & Company, made up of ex members of The Grateful Dead, in which Mayer as guitarist and vocalist replaces the late Jerry Garcia. "Your Body Is A Wonderland" from Mayer's debut album, "Room For Squares" (2002) won the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 2003, but has also appeared high on the list of "worst songs ever recorded" in a poll by "Blender" magazine.
6. "Californication"
Answer: Frusciante
John "Trickfinger" Frusciante is best known as the guitarist with Red Hot Chili Peppers, the band he was a member of twice, between 1988 and 1992, and then again between 1998 and 2009. He is a prolific recording artist and in 2004 alone released six solo albums, as well as also being known for experimenting with music and pushing his boundaries.
He has recorded with artists such as the Mars Volta, Speed Dealer Moms, Johnny Cash, Tricky and Wu-Tang Clan, as well as releasing his own acid house albums, under the name Trickfinger. "Californication" (1999) was his first album with Red Hot Chili Peppers on his return to the band and the title track, released in 2000, saw the band hit number one on both the Canadian rock and US alternative charts.
7. "Pink Houses"
Answer: Mellencamp
Mellencamp sings about the American life in his heartland rock songs, and was also one of the founders, along with Willie Nelson and Neil Young, of Farm Aid, an organisation which seeks to highlight the difficulties faced by family farmers and provide assistance where possible. "Pink Houses" from his 1983 "Uh-huh" album is about some of the challenges of living in present day America.
8. "All Of Me"
Answer: Legend
"All Of Me" from John Legend's 2013 album, "Love In The Future" went to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and also reached the number one spot in the charts of many other countries. It is dedicated to Legend's wife, the model Chrissy Teigen, and the shots at the end of the song's accompanying video are of their actual wedding. Legend was the first black male to join the prestigious EGOT club, as a winner of an Emmy, a Golden Globe, an Oscar and a Tony award.
9. "Proud Mary"
Answer: Fogerty
Fogerty has had an incredible career as one of the founding members of Creedence Clearwater Revival, who, although they never had a Billboard Hot 100 number one record, did have five number two hits. They did however make number one in UK with "Bad Moon Rising" in 1969 and in Canada where "Up Around The Bend", "Lookin' Out My Back Door" (both 1970), "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" and "Sweet Hitch-Hiker" (both 1971) all hit the top spot.
Although "Proud Mary", (1969) went top ten in many countries, the only countries it topped the chart in were Austria, South Africa and Yugoslavia.
10. "Rise"
Answer: Lydon
John Lydon may be better known to many as Johnny Rotten, the anger filled front man for the Sex Pistols, but when they disbanded in 1978, Lydon reverted to his birth name to form the very successful Public Image Ltd, with whom he had four top 20 singles in UK, including 1986s "Rise" which was about South African apartheid and Nelson Mandela.
