quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which newly-formed "jug band" were at the top of this week's chart with their first release "In The Summertime"?

Answer: Mungo Jerry

Mungo Jerry, led by Ray Dorset, got their name from the character Mungojerrie in T.S.Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats". Though they had more single success in the UK, "In The Summertime" was their only US hit, reaching number three.
2. At Number Two was one of the finest rock bands ever, with their first hit, "All Right Now". Who were they?

Answer: Free

One of my fondest memories is my engagement party in August 1968 in Plymouth - not for the obvious reason, but because Free were playing at the venue where we held the party! Sadly Free were short-lived, although their lead man Paul Rodgers went on to form Bad Company and in recent years has sung with Queen.
3. At Number Three was the first American act in this week's chart. They had been frequent visitors to the UK charts in recent years, and were back again with "Up Around The Bend", although this was to be their last visit to the top ten. Who were they?

Answer: Creedence Clearwater Revival

Creedence, formed by the Fogerty brothers in the late 60s, had several years of success with their southern-style rock.
4. At Number Four were my favourite band, The Kinks, with a song containing the lyrics "She walked like a woman and talked like a man". Who was she/he?

Answer: Lola

They don't come any better than the Kinks, and this song is one of their best. Originally the lyric contained the line "Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Coca-Cola" but the BBC's product placement rules at that time would not allow it to be played if it contained a brand name, so Ray Davies had to fly back to the UK in the middle of a US tour to re-record the line to allow the song to be released as a single. So the single version contains the words "cherry cola" instead.
5. Another American group were at Number Five with their seventh UK top ten hit in five years. Who were the group having a success with their revival of "It's All In The Game"?

Answer: The Four Tops

"It's All In The Game" was originally a hit in 1958 for Tommy Edwards, and the song is unique in being the only Number One hit with music written by a US Vice President - Charles Dawes (VP 1925-29)- wrote the original music "Melody in A Major" in 1912, and Carl Sigman added the lyrics in 1951.
6. At Number Six with "Sally", a song made popular decades earlier by Gracie Fields, was a singer who shot to brief fame after appearing on the TV talent show "Opportunity Knocks". Who was the singer?

Answer: Gerry Monroe

All four of the possible answers came to prominence via "Opportunity Knocks". Gerry Monroe had a few months of fame in 1970-71, but faded back into obscurity almost as quickly as he emerged from it.
7. The Beach Boys were at Number Six with a song written and first recorded in 1940 by Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter. Name the song.

Answer: Cottonfields

"Cottonfields" has been sung by countless other performers, including Creedence Clearwater Revival, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, The Pogues, The Carter Sisters and Esther Ofarim.
8. At Number Eight was a track, the final two words of whose title was also the name of the artist(s) - fill in the blanks : "Groovin' With - - ".

Answer: Mr Bloe

"Groovin' With Mr Bloe" was originally the B-side of a single "Make Believe" by the US studio group Wind (with Tony Orlando as the vocalist). It was heard in the UK and covered by British studio musicians who had a big hit with it.
9. At Number Nine was "Goodbye Sam, Hello Samantha", by an artist whose 40th (yes 40th!) UK top ten hit it was. Name the artist.

Answer: Cliff Richard

Cliff's first top ten hit came with "Move It" in 1958. Since then he has so far had a further 68 hits, with the most recent in 2008. There have been 14 chart-toppers amongst them. Oddly, he has hardly bothered the US chart compilers, appearing in the US top ten only four times ("Devil Woman" in 76, "We Don't Talk Any More" in 79, "Dreamin'" in 80 and "The Millennium Prayer" in 99).
10. At Number Ten was Shirley Bassey with her version of a much-covered Beatles song. She was in the UK charts with it for almost six months, and it was also the title track of her successful 1970 album. Name the song.

Answer: Something

Another artist with a very long and successful career, Shirley's first top ten hit, "The Banana Boat Song" came in 1957.
