Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "All aboard, Ha"
Answer: Crazy Train
"Crazy Train" was released in 1980 on Ozzy Osbourne's debut solo album. It was written by Ozzy, Randy Rhoads, and Bob Daisley. The lyrics are based on the U.S.A. and the Soviet Union's Cold War, and the fear many people had of the world's total destruction by the nuclear arsenals of those nations. The complete first line of lyrics are, "All aboard, Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha".
2. "Say your prayers"
Answer: Enter Sandman
"Enter Sandman" was released in 1991 on the fifth studio album by Metallica. It was written by band members James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Kirk Hammett. The song deals with the concept of a child's nightmares. Initially the song sounded too "catchy and commercial" to the ears of Lars and producer Bob Rock. So, for the first time ever they told Hetfield (lyricist) that they thought he could write better lyrics. James apparently took the criticism hard, but did make the adjustments that brought this classic to the world stage.
The complete first line of lyrics are, "Say your prayers, little one, don't forget, my son".
3. "Has he lost" (second line of the song)
Answer: Iron Man
"Iron Man" was released in 1971 on the second studio album by Black Sabbath. All members of the band at the time were given songwriting credits. The song started with a guitar riff by Tony Iommi that Ozzy said sounded like "a big iron bloke walking around". That "iron bloke" notion became the concept for the song.
The lyrics came from bassist Geezer Butler's infatuation with science fiction. The title evolved to "Iron Man". It has no connection to the Marvel Comics character of the same name. The complete first line of lyrics are, "Has he lost his mind?".
This is preceded by the line "I am Iron Man' (which I couldn't use for purposes of this quiz).
4. "White man came"
Answer: Run to the Hills
"Run to the Hills" was released in 1982 on the third studio album by Iron Maiden. It was written by the band's bassist Steve Harris. Lead singer Bruce Dickinson was a big contributor to the writing process, but could not be credited due to contractual agreements with his former band Samson.
The theme of the song is quite apparent in the lyrics. It deals with the oppression brought upon Native Americans by Europeans and American expansionist ideologies. The complete first line of lyrics are, "White man came across the sea".
5. "One life, I'm"
Answer: You've Got Another Thing Comin'
"You've Got Another Thing Comin'" was released in 1982 on the eighth studio album by the band Judas Priest. It was written by band members Rob Halford, K.K. Downing, and Glenn Tipton. It was a track they had long ago recorded, and just had laying around.
They begrudgingly added it to the "Screaming for Vengeance" album. After listening to it with more intent they thought it was the type of song that if you were driving 30 mph, and put the song on the stereo you'd be compelled to accelerate to top speed.
The complete first line of lyrics are, "One life, I'm gonna live it up".
6. "It's early morning"
Answer: Rock You Like a Hurricane
"Rock You Like a Hurricane" was released in 1983 on the ninth studio album by the Scorpions. It was written by band members Rudolf Schenker, Klaus Meine, and Herman Rarebell. It is a song entirely about and filled with sexual innuendos. Rudolf said he turned to the "demented mind of our drummer, Herman, for all the sex talk we needed".
The complete first line of lyrics are, "It's early morning, the sun comes out".
7. "If you like"
Answer: Ace of Spades
"Ace of Spades" was released in 1980 on the fourth studio album by the band Motorhead. It was written by band members Lemmy, Eddie Clarke, and Phil Taylor. It is said that lead singer Lemmy (Ian Kilmister) wrote many of the band's songs while using the restroom.
However, in this case he said he wrote it in the back of a van that was going 90 mph down a motorway. The complete first line of lyrics are, "If you like to gamble, I tell you I'm your man".
8. "When there's lightning"
Answer: Rainbow in the Dark
"Rainbow in the Dark" was released in 1983 on the debut album by Dio. All members of the band were given songwriting credits. The song describes the way Ronnie James Dio felt when he was frontman for Black Sabbath. "Alone and rejected" were the words he used to represent his emotions during that time period.
The complete first line of lyrics are, "When there's lightning, you know it always brings me down".
9. "Out on the"
Answer: Round and Round
"Round and Round" was released in 1984 on the debut studio album by the band Ratt. It was written by band members Robbin Crosby, Steve Pearcy, and Warren DeMartini. The song was put to video, and became one of the biggest video hits of the 1980s. It featured T.V. notable Milton Berle in multiple roles.
He became associated with the band as his nephew, Marshall Berle, was the group's manager. The complete first line of lyrics are, "Out on the street, that's where we'll meet".
10. "Girls rock your" (second line of the song)
Answer: Cum on Feel the Noize
"Cum on Feel the Noize" was originally released in 1973 by the band Slade, but for the purposes of this quiz we speak of the 1983 cover version by the band Quiet Riot. The song was written by Slade band members Noddy Holder and Jim Lea. Strangely, lead singer for Quiet Riot, Kevin DuBrow, didn't want any cover songs on their debut album "Metal Health".
In fact, he said he was not even a fan of the band Slade. Thus, they tried to cover the song so badly that the record label would refuse to release it. No such luck as the song went to number five on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, and their album went to number one on the U.S. Billboard album chart.
The complete first line of lyrics are, "Girls rock your boys".
