Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Oh, and there we were all in one place, a generation lost in space, with no time left to start again".

Answer: American Pie

This reminds me of my daily commute to work.
The correct answer is "American Pie" by Don McLean, 1972. This song starts off describing McLean's memories of the death of Buddy Holly, then moved onto how McLean was viewing America as it was in the early 1970's.

Answer: Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves

She obviously graduated with a diploma, poor thing.
A great tale sung by Cher in 1971: "Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves".
Her first hit single was "I've Got You Babe" in 1965, sung with Sonny Bono (ex-husband and partner).

Other songs listed are:
"Can This Be Real," Natural Four

"He Will Break Your Heart," Tony Orlando and Dawn
5. "Left standing in the lurch at a church, where people are saying: 'My God, that's tough, she stood him up, no point in us remaining.'"

Answer: Alone Again (Naturally)

When something like this happens, you know it's gonna be a long night.
At #1 for 6 weeks in 1972, this happy tale "Alone Again (Naturally)" is sung by Gilbert O'Sullivan. Still singing throughout the 1990's, O'Sullivan's work is primarily found in Japan, where he has a small but loyal following.
Other songs are:
"Leaving Me" by The Independents

Answer: Delta Dawn

This is what happens when you don't eat your vegetables like your mom told you.
This is "Delta Dawn", sung by Helen Reddy and reaching Billboard's #1 in 1973. (You'll also find versions by Tanya Tucker and Bette Midler.)
Originally from Australia, at one time Helen lived in Santa Monica, California. Living in California, she was active in community affairs, having served 3 years as Commissioner of Parks and Recreation for the State of California.

Answer: The Night the Lights Went Out In Georgia

I expect all these characters have been on The Jerry Springer Show by now. Don't expect to get an invite to their 50th anniversary party!
This drama ("The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia") was sung in 1973 by Vicki Lawrence (of "The Carol Burnett Show" fame...remember her? Great comedian!).

The other songs are:
"The Witch Queen of New Orleans," Redbone
"Why Can't We Live Together," Timmy Thomas
"Give It To The People," The Righteous Brothers
8. "Look what they've done to my brain, ma, well they've cooked it like a chicken bone, I think I'm half insane, ma, look what they've done to my brain."

Answer: Look What They've Done To My Song, Ma

This is your brain after college finals.
You guessed right if you picked, "Look What They've Done To My Song, Ma", sung by The New Seekers in 1970. They also are known for "We'd Like To Teach The World To Sing"(1971), once used in a Coca-Cola commercial.
Other songs listed are:
"Psychedelic Shack," The Temptations
"Groovy Situation," Gene Chandler
"Easy Come, Easy Go," Bobby Sherman (sigh, I never married him either)
9. "How in the world you gonna see, laughin' at fools like me, who in the heck'd you think you are, a superstar?"

Answer: Instant Karma

Heck, I AM a superstar...isn't everybody?
One of my heroes sang this: "Instant Karma" by John Lennon, 1970.
He once said, "I believe in everything until it's disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it's in your mind. Who's to say that dreams and nightmares aren't as real as the here and now? Reality leaves a lot to the imagination."
It truly was a sad day when we lost John.
The other songs listed are:
"Which Way You Goin' Billy" - The Poppy Family
"Express Yourself" - Charles Wright and the 103rd Street Band
"Mr Big Stuff" - Jean Knight
10. "Some try to tell me, thoughts they cannot defend, just what you want to be, you'll be in the end".

Answer: Nights in White Satin

This encouraged me to become the poor slob I am today.
You're right if you selected "Nights in White Satin" by the Moody Blues, 1972. Probably one of the most known classic rock albums is their 1966 "Days of Future Passed". It was one of the first "concept" albums, recorded with both a symphony orchestra and in stereo (not normally done those days).
The other songs are:
"Ball of Confusion," The Temptations
"Inner City Blues," Marvin Gaye
"Back Stabbers," The O'Jays
