Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The last single released by The Beatles before their breakup topped the charts in 1970. It was..

Answer: The Long and Winding Road

The twentieth and final number one song for The Beatles in the U.S, "The Long and Winding Road", a two sided hit along with "For You Blue", reached that spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in June of 1970 for a two week stay. The song is actually said to have accelerated the breakup of the group. Paul McCartney did not like the overdubs and other alterations that producer Phil Spector used in creating a remix of the song for the album "Let It Be" and actually cited this as one of the reasons that McCartney actually asked the courts to dissolve the Beatles partnership. Nevertheless, the song was a chart topper, selling 1.2 million copies in the first two days of its release.
2. The Raiders topped the charts in 1971 with this tale of tears. What song did it?

Answer: Indian Reservation

Paul Revere and the Raiders had shortened their name to simply The Raiders when "Indian Reservation (The Lament of the Cherokee Reservation Indian) soared to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts for a one week stay in July of 1971. The group had major success in the 1960s with songs like "Kicks", "Good Thing", "Just Like Me", and "Hungry", but never achieved number one status until this song did it.

The song itself was written by John D. Loudermilk and refers to the removal of the Cherokee Indians from their native homes in the southwestern U.S. and subsequent removal to reservations.

This removal is sometimes referred to as The Trail of Tears. It was first recorded in 1959 under the title of "The Pale Faced Indian". The song garnered little recognition until the Raiders took it to the top of the charts.
3. What film is associated with the Sammy Davis Jr. 1972 hit "The Candy Man"?

Answer: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

The song is from the 1971 film "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" and was most famously done by Sammy Davis Jr. The song remained at number one for three weeks during June of that year. The song was co-written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse expressly for the film. It is generally recognized as one of Sammy Davis Jr's signature songs although he originally disliked it.
4. George Harrison asked for something in his 1973 number one single. He said Give Me...

Answer: Love

"Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)" was the actual title on the label of Harrison's number one hit of 1973, which spent a week at the top of the U.S. Billboard charts in the summer of that year. It was the first single released from the album called "Living in the Material World". Coincidentally, when it got to number one it knocked Paul McCartney and Wings' "My Love" from the top of the charts.
5. What fictional band gave Elton John a number one hit in 1974?

Answer: Bennie and The Jets

"Bennie and The Jets" was the saga of the fictional band of which Elton John was a fan. This tale led John to the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts for a week in the spring of 1974. The song was a release from the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album. Elton was against releasing the cut as a single claiming that he thought the song would not do well. I guess musicians don't know everything.
6. The Doobie Brothers flowed to the top of the charts with this 1975 hit. Name it.

Answer: Black Water

"Black Water" was a Billboard Hot 100 chart topper for The Doobie Brothers in 1975, spending one week at the top of the charts. It came of the album called "What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits". It was originally a B-side tune when first released in 1974, but the song, with lead singer Patrick Simmons at the helm, became so popular that it was released on its own in 1975.
7. After this guy got finished making love to your old lady, he found a new woman when he found "Disco Lady" in 1976. Who was this two timer?

Answer: Johnnie Taylor

"Disco Lady" was a Johnnie Taylor number one hit in 1976, remaining at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts for four weeks in the spring that year. Taylor had most notably been known for his 1960s hit "Who's Making Love?" and the lyrics "Who's making love to your old lady, while you were out making love" until this song hit the charts.

Interestingly, this song is generally regarded as the first number one single that actually had the word "disco" in the title.
8. What song turned ABBA into the Kings and Queens of the charts in 1977?

Answer: Dancing Queen

"Dancing Queen" is generally considered ABBA's signature hit although it only spent one week at the top of the U.S. Billboard charts in the spring of 1977 and ended up as their only number one in the U.S. The song was a true international hit, reaching the number one position in 13 different countries around the globe, and reached the top 5 in at least five others.

The song is listed by Rolling Stone Magazine at number 171 on their compilation of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".
9. The Rolling Stones doing disco? Say it isn't so. What song of theirs would fall into that category from 1978?

Answer: Miss You

A cut off the "Some Girls" album, "Miss You" spent one week at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the summer of 1978. If you talk to Mick Jagger or Ron Woods, they claim that the song was never intended to be a disco hit, but Keith Richard claims that "Miss You" was a darn good disco record and was supposed to be one. Charlie Watts agrees, but whatever the case, the song found its way to the top of the charts and also squeaking onto Rolling Stone Magazine's (no pun intended)"500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list at number 496.
10. Disco queen Donna Summer topped the charts in 1979 with this song guaranteed to make your temperature rise. What song was it?

Answer: Hot Stuff

Summer attempted to break away from her "disco queen" image with the album called "Bad Girls". This song was a cut from that album and featured more traditional rock type guitar riffs. In fact the guitar solo on the song was performed by Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, of Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan fame.

The song spent a total of three non-consecutive weeks at number one in June of 1979. Summer also won a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, making her the first African-American to ever win this award.

The song is listed prominently on Rolling Stone Magazine's compilation of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" at number 103.
