A little known fact is that this song was the first number one song on Casey Kasem's "American Top 40", (AT40) a weekly countdown show of the top 40 songs in the U.S. Kasem's show debuted the first week of July in 1970.

Paul McCartney did not like the overdubs and other alterations that producer Phil Spector used in creating a remix of the song for the album "Let It Be" and actually cited this as one of the reasons that McCartney actually asked the courts to dissolve the Beatles partnership. Nevertheless, the song was a chart topper, selling 1.2 million copies in the first two days of its release.

From Quiz No. 1 Hits of the 70s Vol.6

Answer: Let It Be

"Let It Be" was the final single that was released when the Beatles were officially an active group. "The Long and Winding Road" was released later, but by that time Paul McCartney had announced that he and the group had parted ways, so the group actually no longer existed. The song itself spent two weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring of 1970, and was written by Paul McCartney after he had a dream in which his deceased mother appeared. That is the apparent reference to Mother Mary. The song is listed on Rolling Stone Magazine's compilation of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" at number 20.

From Quiz No. 1 Hits of the 70s Vol.5

Answer: Bridge Over Troubled Water

It was the beautiful ballad "Bridge Over Troubled Water" that gave Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel a number one tune in 1970, staying at the top of the Billboard U.S. Hot 100 charts for six weeks in the spring. It also became their only number one hit in the U.K. It was written by Paul Simon specifically for Art Garfunkel to sing as a solo, but Art thought that Paul should do it. After some consternation, Art did the number and it became a classic. More recently, when the two appear together, they will take turns singing the different verses of the song. No matter how they did it, the song is one of the best in history, winning two Grammy Awards in 1971. A cover by Aretha Franklin also won a Grammy in 1972. Simon and Garfunkel's rendition is listed on Rolling Stone Magazine's compilation of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" at number 47.

"Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again)" made it to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the U.S. for a two week stay during February of 1970 and also spent five weeks atop the Soul charts. "Everybody Is a Star" is a more traditional rock type song that became the second half of this double sided hit. This song reminds us that everyone is special in their own way and was regarded in some circles as the better song of the two.
