1. OMD is actually an abbreviation. What is the full title of this band?

Answer: Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark

Originally they were called VCLXI, after a cover from a Kraftwerk album. Whilst in VCLXI they wrote a song called 'Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark' which they then used as the name of their band.
2. What were the names of the founding members of OMD?

Answer: Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphries

Clark and Bell formed Erasure, Ware and Marsh formed The Human League and Strange and Egan formed Visage.

Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphries first met at primary school in the 1970s and discovered that they both loved electronic music which was just starting to break through at the time.
3. Which British northern city did OMD originate from?

Answer: Liverpool

McCluskey and Humphries grew up in The Wirral on Merseyside. Their first gig was at Eric's Club in Liverpool in 1978. Other famous bands that have played at Eric's are Teardrop Explodes, Echo and the Bunnymen and Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
4. Which German band was a major inspiration to OMD?

Answer: Kraftwerk

All of the bands listed are German, however it was Kraftwerk that inspired Paul and Andy to form OMD in the late 1970s.

In answer to a fan's question on the official OMD website, Andy McCluskey said
"There would only be two other bands that I would have liked to have been in other than OMD and they're probably pretty obvious choices. Firstly, The Beatles, because it must have been amazing to have been in the greatest pop group of all time when pop music was still new and young. Secondly, Kraftwerk because they're my favourite band of all time. "

Answer: Electricity

Although all of the songs listed were hits for OMD, their debut single was 'Electricity', which was released in 1979,and although not charting very high lead to them being signed by Virgin's subsidiary label Din Disc.
6. Which electro pop act did OMD support on their first tour in 1979?

Answer: Gary Numan

All the acts listed are electro pop acts, however it was Gary Numan who asked OMD to support him on his first major British tour in 1979.
7. Which historical figure featured in two OMD songs?

Answer: Joan of Arc

Andy McCluskey had read a book about Joan of Arc and was fascinated by her, leading him to write the songs 'Joan of Arc' and 'Maid of Orleans'.
8. One of OMD's most well known songs is 'Enola Gay'. Who or what was Enola Gay?

Answer: An aeroplane

Enola Gay was the name of the aircraft that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima in August 1945. The name of the bomb was 'Little Boy' and is referenced in the lyrics:

"Enola Gay, is mother proud of Little Boy today
Aha this kiss you give, is never ever gonna fade away."

'If You Leave' was a hit song from the movie 'Pretty in Pink' which was released in 1986 and starred Molly Ringwald and Andrew McCarthy.

Answer: Atomic Kitten

Andy McCluskey formed Atomic Kitten in 1997. During the writing of their second album Atomic Kitten cut their ties with Andy McCluskey.

McCluskey and Humphries reformed OMD in 2006 and performed in a string of concerts in 2008.
