2. Three of the following musicians were murdered but one died of a cerebral haemorrhage after falling off a bike while on holiday in Ibizia, Spain. Which musician is the odd one out?

Answer: Nico, Velvet Underground/solo

Never one to do the sensible thing, Nico set off on her bike at the hottest part of the day in mid-July to get some marijuana in the nearby village. It seems she had a heart attack, fell off, and when she got to hospital she was thought to have had heat stroke and wasn't treated properly. She died the same day, 18th July 1988.

In September 1987, Jaco Pastorious went into a coma after a fight with a night club bouncer in Florida. He died ten days later. He was 35. He'd had a blistering career and was considered by many, including himself, as one of the greatest bass players of all time. His mental health had shown signs of deteriorating in the early 1980s (not helped by substance abuse), and by the time of his death he'd been living a precarious life in and out of hospital and also on and off the streets.

In August 1993, Mayhem founding member Euronymous (born Øystein Aarseth in 1968 in Egersund, Norway) was stabbed 23 times by Varg Vikernes (aka Kristian Vikernes). Varg claimed it was self-defense and said he had heard rumours that Euronymous was planning to kidnap and torture him. He was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 21 years in prison, but he only served 15.

At the time of the murder, Varg Vikernes was a member of Mayhem and he played bass on one of the band's most highly-regarded albums, "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" (released in 1994). He is best-known for his one-man band Burzum, under which name he released albums even while in prison.

On April 1st 1984 Marvin Gaye was shot by his father, Marvin Gay Senior, with a gun he (Marvin Junior) had given his father for Christmas the previous year. The relationship between father and son had never been rosy.

3. Only three of the following are names of well-known bands. Can you spot the 2008 film?

Answer: Stone of Destiny

The Stone Poneys were a folk-rock trio from the 1960s which featured Linda Ronstadt as the lead singer. The Stone Temple Pilots are a rock band from San Diego, California, formed in 1985, with a style ranging from grunge to a blend of independent and hard rock. The Stone Roses are a rock band from Manchester England, formed in 1983.

"Stone of Destiny" is a 2008 film by Charles Martin Smith. It is the true story of Ian Hamilton, a Scottish nationalist, who together with three friends removed the Stone of Scone from Westminster Abbey in London. The stone, used for centuries in the coronation of Scottish monarch, had been captured by the English in 1296.

4. Often a song is covered by another artist and it sometimes becomes an even bigger hit. All of the following songs have been covered, but only one was a huge hit in the 1960s, 1970s and 2000s for three different artists. Which song is the odd one out?

Answer: The First Cut is the Deepest

"The First Cut is the Deepest" was a hit for Cat Stevens in 1965, Rod Stewart in 1976, and Sheryl Crow in 2003.

"Don't Think Twice It's Alright" has been covered by many different artists, including Peter, Paul & Mary, but was a really big hit for Bob Dylan. "How Deep is Your Love" was also covered by many artists, but was only a major hit for the Bee Gees. "Respect" was originally recorded by Otis Redding in 1965, before becoming Aretha Franklin's most famous hit. It is definitely on several different soul albums, but no one else had the Aretha success!

5. All four of the following musicians recorded with the late jazz legend Miles Davis. Three of them were born in the USA, but one was born in Yorkshire, England. Which of these Miles Davis cohorts is the odd one out?

Answer: John McLaughlin

Jazz guitarist John McLaughlin was born in Doncaster, West Yorkshire, in 1942. He did loads of blues, rock and pop session work in the 1960s before recording his debut solo album, "Extrapolation", in 1969. Soon after its release, McLaughlin moved to the USA to join ex-Miles Davis prodigy drummer Tony Williams in his jazz/rock fusion group The Tony Williams Lifetime. Tony Williams was a Chicago-born Bostonian.

McLaughlin went on to record with Miles Davis on seminal albums such as "In a Silent Way" (1969), "Bitches Brew" (1970), "Jack Johnson" (1971), and "On the Corner" (1972). He also formed the wonderful Mahavishnu Orchestra.

New York-born sax player Sonny Rollins played on a handful of Miles Davis albums in the early 1950s. The list of jazz heavyweights also appearing on these albums is breathtaking: Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, Art Blakey, John Coltrane, Kenny Clarke, and Horace Silver, to name just a few!

The first appearance on a Miles Davis album of Chicagoan native Herbie Hancock was on "Seven Steps to Heaven" in 1963. He kept on popping up throughout Miles subsequent recording career.

Barry Manilow also recorded the song, and in January 1976 his version reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It won a Grammy for Song of the Year.

The three songs written by The Bee Gees were big hits for others. "Chain Reaction" recorded by Diana Ross rose to number one on the UK Singles Chart in 1986.
