Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We all remember The Searchers. Hits like "Love Potion #9" and "Needles and Pins". How about this other hit they recorded in between those in 1964 that actually charted only 3 positions lower than "Needles and Pins", but is largely forgotten.

Answer: Don't Throw Your Love Away

This song reached number 16 in the U. S. and was The Searchers third number one song in the U.K., following "Sweets For My Sweet", a 1963 hit that never charted here, since it was before The British Invasion, and the aforementioned "Needles and Pins" which went number one in the U.K. in 1964, and reached number 13 here in the U.S. "Love Potion #9", which was a number one song in the U.S., came later that year, and never even charted in the U. K.
2. Del Shannon had a number of big hits in the early 60's such as "Runaway" "Hats Off To Larry", and "Little Town Flirt", and a rendition of "Handyman". How about the one from late 1964 that went up the charts, and is largely forgotten?

Answer: Keep Searchin' (We'll Follow The Sun)

All the others were also released by Del Shannon during his career but they never did anything chartwise. "Searching" topped out at number nine on the U.S. charts, actually gaining a higher position than "Little Town Flirt", two years earlier, which peaked at number ten. Sadly, Del took his own life in the early 90's.
3. "The Leader Of The Pack", and "Remember, (Walking In The Sand)" were big hits for The Shangri-Las in 1964, as well as "Give Him A Great Big Kiss" in 1965. What is their largely forgotten hit which came out later in 1965?

Answer: I Can Never Go Home Anymore

This song continued The Shangri-Las penchant for singing about melodramtic events. It concerned a girl running away from home with a guy, against her mother's wishes, and then wanting to go back when it didn't work out. A common tale even back then. It went as high as number six on the charts, and was their last major hit before they broke up in 1968.
4. Billy Joe Royal recorded the Top 10 hit "Down In The Boondocks" in 1965, and also scored another major hit in 1969 with "Cherry Hill Park". What about the follow-up to "Boondocks" in 1965? Can you remember it?

Answer: I Knew You When

"I Knew You When" was released on the heels of "Down In The Boondocks" and peaked at number 14 on the U. S. charts that year. "Boondocks" had gotten as high as number nine. Interstingly both songs were written by Joe South, who would have a couple of hits of his own later in the 60's. "Cherry Hill Park" which is a very widely played tune, reached number 15 in 1969. Royal re-incarnated himself as country singer in the 80's and charted 15 songs between 1985-1992 on the country charts.
5. The early 60's saw Brian Hyland score major hits with "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini", and "Sealed With A Kiss", but how about this hit for Brian in mid decade. What song was this?

Answer: The Joker Went Wild

Hylan was a young star at age 16 with "Bikini" which reached number one in 1960, and "Sealed With A Kiss" which went to number three in 1962. "The Joker Went Wild" reached the Top 20 in 1966, peaking at number 20. Hyland's career was on the decline and his songs were going nowhere, but he hooked up with Del Shannon in 1970 and recorded "Gypsy Woman", another song you might remember, and that one hit number three on the charts, making it the second biggest song in his career.
6. The McCoys hit paydirt in late 1965 with "Hang On Sloopy", but how about their follow-up song in early 1966. Can you name it?

Answer: Fever

"Fever" a song that's been around for decades, and has been covered by at least 75 artists since it was first recorded in 1956, was their follow-up to the number one "Hang On Sloopy". It reached number seven on the charts in the winter/spring of 1966. The leader of the group, Rick Derringer, in later years performed with Edgar Winter. Steely Dan, and Cyndi Lauper.
7. Manfred Mann sang "Do Wah Diddy" and that was a smash hit in 1964. You also might remember "The Mighty Quinn" from 1968, but how about this Top 20 hit that followed "Do Wah Diddy" during 1965. Can you name it?

Answer: Sha La La

Way before they became the Earth Band, "Sha La La" reached number 12 on the charts during 1965. "Do Wah Diddy" was a number one hit, and so was "The Mighty Quinn" later on in 1968.
8. Len Barry embarked on a solo career in 1964, after leaving The Dovells (Bristol Stomp), and recorded "1-2-3" which was a major smash hit for him in 1965. The next year, 1966, he followed up with a song which didn't do quite as well, yet went pretty high on the Billboard charts. Name it.

Answer: Like A Baby

"1-2-3" went to number two on the Billboard charts, and made the Top 10 in the U. K. as well. "Like A Baby" made the Top 10 in the U.K. as well, but only charted at number 27 in the U. S. Both songs were written by Barry and partner Dave White, who was an original member of Danny and The Juniors (At The Hop).
9. Everyone was bouncing with The Cyrkle and their smash hit from 1966 called "Red Rubber Ball". Their follow-up song didn't do quite as well but still made the Top 20 in the U.S. What was the song called?

Answer: Turn Down Day

"Red Rubber Ball" narrowly missed the top spot, peaking at number two in 1966. This follow up didn't fare as well, topping out at number 16. The group put out a few more hits with each one doing progressively worse, and disbanded in 1968.
10. This 1966 hit was a follow-up to The Toys smash rendition of "A Lover's Concerto" which had almost made it to the top of the charts the prior fall. What was this Top 20 follow-up?

Answer: Attack

The Toys were a three girl group from New York, in the pattern of The Supremes, and the other girl groups of the time. Led by Barbara Harris, they had scored with "Concerto" as a number two hit in 1965. "Attack" didn't fare as well, peaking at number 18 in the winter of 1966. They group stopped recording in 1968.

Just a note. If you really want to say "Oh Wow", most of these songs are available on YouTube, so you can really bring back these memories.
