Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Crime is/ Increasing/ Trigger-happy/ Policing/ Panic/ Is spreading/ God knows where/ We're heading/ Make me wanna holler..." was in which Marvin Gaye song?

Answer: Inner City Blues

This funky tune is on Marvin's "What's Going On" album, (which includes the other titles listed above). Most people associate Marvin strictly with love songs like "Let's Get It On" and "Sexual Healing", but he knew something wasn't right with the world, and this was the album that really showed his conscious side.
2. "Broken home/ Father gone/ Mama tired/ So he's all alone..." is from what Curtis Mayfield song?

Answer: Little Child Runnin' Wild

In typical Curtis fashion, he told the story of a child dealing with the harsh realities of ghetto life with a single mother. This song was off the "Superfly" soundtrack, which was entirely produced by Curtis.
3. "Well I tried to play my music/ But my music was too loud/ Well I pleased all the people/ But I couldn't please a crowd..." was a line from what Al Green song?

Answer: Keep Me Crying

This is the first song off the album "Have A Good Time", and one of his more upbeat and funky tunes, in comparison with the typical Al Green slow jam.
4. "Looks like nothing's gonna change/ Everything still remains the same/ I can't do what ten people tell me to do..." was from what famous Otis Redding tune?

Answer: Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay

This, of course, was one of Otis' best-known songs. This was pretty much the only part of the song that doesn't give it away with a reference to docks and sitting...
5. In what song did Stevie Wonder sing "Don't wanna cause nobody no bodily harm/ But somebody's been rubbing on my good luck charm..."?

Answer: Ain't Gonna Stand For It

This song was from the 1980 classic "Hotter Than July", and it is about people trying to get over at his expense, and the fact that he won't take it anymore. This is by far my favorite Stevie song, but somehow it never makes it onto any of his compilation albums...
6. "Taking the bumps and the bruises and all the things of a two-time loser/ Trying to hold on, my faith is gone, it's just another sad song..." was from what song by Teddy Pendergrass?

Answer: Love TKO

From the album "From Teddy, With Love", this song describes Teddy's attempts to save a relationship that has already gone bad twice, finally coming to the conclusion that "I think I better let it go/ It looks like another love TKO" referring to the third time being the last.
7. What well-known Marvin Gaye song bears the words "Where did all the blue skies go/ Poison is the wind that blows/ From the north and south and east..."?

Answer: Mercy Mercy Me

This is one of Marvin's most recognizable songs, also off "What's Going On". This song, sub-titled "The Ecology" is Marvin's take on mankind's abuse of our environment and the ills it has brought about.
8. "You ask me am I happy/ Well as a matter of fact/ I can say that I'm ecstatic/ 'Cause we all just made a pact..." was sung by Stevie Wonder in which one of his songs?

Answer: Masterblaster

This song, subtitled "Jammin'", was also off "Hotter Than July", and this one has kind of a roots reggae sound to it, along with one of the catchiest basslines I've ever heard. This one usually does show up on his "Best of" collections.
9. "All day long they work so hard/ Till the sun is goin' down/ Working on the highways and by-ways/ And wearing, wearing a frown..." was from a song by who?

Answer: Sam Cooke

From the album "The Man And His Music", "Chain Gang" was one of Sam Cooke's more well-known songs, especially after the 1991 movie "Cadence", which made the song's chorus almost a mainstream song in itself.
10. "Hush now child/ And don't you cry/ Your folks might understand ya/ By and by..." comes from what Curtis Mayfield classic?

Answer: Move On Up

This was Curtis' first ever hit single, from off his first solo album "Curtis" released in 1970. It is another example of the consciousness that made Curtis such an important figure in the annals of soul music, especially when it came to civil rights issues.

He will be sorely missed (for those who don't know, he was paralyzed by a falling stage light in 1990 and died in 1999 of health complications).
