Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. American jazz singer Ruth Lee Jones was known by which stage name?

Answer: Dinah Washington

Washington also performed blues and R&B in addition to jazz and won a Grammy in 1959 for Best R&B Performance for her rendition of "What A Difference A Day Makes". Her highest charting U.S. hit was the duet with Brook Benton, "A Rockin' Good Way (to Mess Around and Fall in Love)" in 1960.
2. Which English punk and new wave singer recorded an album of country songs entitled "Almost Blue" in 1981?

Answer: Elvis Costello

Like his previous four albums, this one went top ten in UK where country music is not as well known as in the USA. In the States, "Almost Blue" only reached number 50 and the main single from the album, "Good Year For The Roses" didn't chart there, but did get as high as number six in UK. "Good Year For The Roses" was originally recorded by George Jones in 1970.
3. The Wombles had several UK top ten hits in the 1970s, but which of the Wombles is named after the capital of the Isle of Mull?

Answer: Tobermory

Tobermory is the Womble tasked with inventing things to make their lives easier and is good friends with Great Uncle Bugaria. The town of Tobermory on Mull in the Inner Hebrides has been a fishing port since the late 18th century and is well known for its distillery, which is famed for its smoky, unpeated "Tobermory Single Malt" whisky.

The band is the creation of Mike Batt and have had hits such as "Remember You're A Womble" (1974) and "Let's Womble To The Party Tonight" (1975). In 1976, Wellington Womble released a solo single entitled "Rainmaker".
4. Who, in 1969 became the first band ever to play Wembley Stadium?

Answer: Yes

Many people believe that the London Rock n Roll Show in 1972 was the first music event at Wembley, and although it was quite an event, with Billy Fury, Bill Haley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard all performing, it was in fact Yes who played there first on 13th July 1969.

The Yes gig was part of the 1969 Oxfam Charity Walk, a 30 mile sponsored walk which ended at Wembley Stadium with a concert. The walk raised £250,000, which was a tidy sum in 1969 and also appearing at the concert were Alan Price, Status Quo and Love Affair.
5. Mstislav Rostropovich is regarded by his peers as one of the greatest players of which instrument?

Answer: Cello

Rostropovich was a Soviet cellist, human rights advocate and commissioned many new pieces for the cello. At the 1968 Proms concerts in London, he played with the Soviet State Symphony Orchestra, amid rising tensions as Russia had just invaded Czechoslovakia.

The orchestra started playing "Cello Concerto in B Minor" by Czech composer Dvorak while many people were vocally protesting about the events earlier in the day, but when Rostropovich finished he did so to huge applause, and he stood and held Dvorak's score aloft as a gesture of solidarity. Rostropovich died in 2007.
6. American band They Might Be Giants hit the UK top ten in 1990 with which song?

Answer: Birdhouse In Your Soul

They Might Be Giants have been making music since 1982, but have never had a huge amount of commercial success. They have released several albums aimed at children as well as over 20 albums of alternative rock, as well as contributing to movie and TV soundtracks.
7. Which singer shares her name with the founder and first queen of the ancient Phoenician state of Carthage?

Answer: Dido

Dido, the singer, real name Florian Cloud de Bounevialle Armstrong, has had several UK hits such as "White Flag" (2003), and "Thank You" (2002) but is probably best known for "Stan", her 2000 collaboration with Eminem. Dido, the queen, is mentioned in works by both Greek and Roman scholars, specifically in "Aeneid" the epic poem written by Roman poet Virgil.
8. Whose "James Bond" theme came between Shirley Bassey and Rita Coolidge?

Answer: Sheena Easton

Bassey did the theme songs for "Goldfinger" (1964), "Diamonds Are Forever" (1971) and "Moonraker" (1979), while Coolidge sang "All Time High", the theme to 1983's "Octopussy" meaning that in between them was Sheena Easton with "For Your Eyes Only" (1981). Easton was actually the second choice of the film's producers and they only turned to her after Blondie declined the offer.
9. From which musical is the song "Ol' Man River" found?

Answer: Showboat

"Showboat" from 1927 also contains such classic tunes as "Make Believe" and "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man". The song "Ol' Man River" is sung in the show by Stevedore Joe, who was most notably played by the great Paul Robeson in the 1932 stage production as well as in the 1936 movie.
10. A.R. Rahman's song "Chaiyya Chaiyya" originally appeared in Hindi film "Dil Se" (1998) but also found much success as the soundtrack to which 2006 movie directed by Spike Lee?

Answer: Inside Man

A.R. Rahman is an Indian musician, probably best known in the west for his work on the "Slumdog Millionaire" soundtrack in 2008 and his teaming up with Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Dave Stewart and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley to form the supergroup, SuperHeavy who released their debut album in 2011. "Inside Man" was a bank heist thriller starring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen and Jodie Foster.
