Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The music video to this one hit wonder featured a model rolling around in the sand at the beach.

Answer: Wicked Game

Chris Isaak put forth what is his best known song, "Wicked Game", in 1990, but it did not reach full success until January of 1991 when it peaked at number six on the Billboard charts. Its success was partly due to the fact that it was featured on the popular David Lynch film "Wild At Heart".

Some critics claim that the music video which features Danish model Helena Christensen rolling around on a Hawaiian beach shirtless (although concealed by the fact that her arms were covering her chest area) was a main reason for the success of this song. Regardless, this song put Chris Isaak on the music map and while he never garnered a Billboard Hot 100 hit after this, his songs "Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing" and "Somebody's Crying" (the latter just missing the Top 40 by five spots) achieved success outside of the United States, particularly on Australian radio.
2. This DiVinyls tune stirred some controversy in the United States.

Answer: I Touch Myself

One of the more seductive songs recorded in music history, the DiVinyl's "I Touch Myself" was controversial due to its various sexual innuendos of pleasure, eroticism, and orgasm. Written by the famous songwriting team of Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg (also known for other hits such as Madonna's "Like A Virgin" and The Bangles' "Eternal Flame"), peaked at number four in the United States and at number one in Australia.

The song has been covered and parodied on many occasions by various musicians including Weird Al Yankovic, Ben Folds, Tori Amos, and Pink.

The song has even played a role in some pop culture events. During one episode of "Lip Sync Battle", actor and comedian Josh Gad faced off against actress Kaley Cuoco and performed a stellar comedic performance of "I Touch Myself" and was declared the winner of the episode.
3. An English musician and a Dutch saxophonist collaborated on this one hit wonder instrumental song.

Answer: Lily Was Here

"Lily Was Here" was featured on the soundtrack to the Dutch film "De Kassiere" and one of three singles released from her debut album "Saxuality". The song was performed by Eurythmics guitarist David Stewart and Dutch saxophonist Candy Dulfer. At the time of the songs release, Dulfer had not released any previous material as a solo artist.

This would be her only Top Forty hit in the United States peaking in at number eleven.
4. A Loleatta Holloway disco track was sampled into this Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch number one hit.

Answer: Good Vibrations

Loleatta Holloway garnered success of her own during the disco era of the 1970s with a variety of dance hits including "Dreamin", "Hit and Run", "Ripped Off", and "Love Sensation". "Love Sensation" was the main song sampled in the Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch hit "Good Vibrations". "Good Vibrations" lasted twenty weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.

It peaked at number one on both the Hot 100 and the US Hot Dance Music Charts. It also peaked in at number one in both Sweden and Switzerland.
5. This pop ballad was written by Brenda Russell but performed by vocalist Oleta Adams.

Answer: Get Here

Brenda Russell is best known in the R&B scene of the 1980's for her hit "Piano In The Dark" that went to number 20 on the R&B charts. In 1988, she wrote the song "Get Here" and performed it as a track on the album of the same name. It wasn't until 1990 when Oleta Adams covered the song on her album "Circle of One" that the song gained popularity.

By the spring of 1991, Oleta Adams' version of the song finally peaked at number five on the US Billboard Top 40. Known more for her jazz and gospel style of music, "Get Here" is the only song to reach mainstream success for Adams.
6. American progressive rock band Queensryche recorded a song believed to be about the act of lucid dreaming.

Answer: Silent Lucidity

Queesryche was part of a slew of heavy metal bands of the late 1980s that became famous for their "power ballads". According to a list prepared by VH1, it was ranked at number 21 on a "Greatest Power Ballads" list. Throughout their history, they had success on the US Mainstream Rock charts that peaked within the Top 40.

When it comes to the US Billboard Top 40, however, only "Silent Lucidity" hit the Top 40 peaking in at number nine. Unusual for heavy metal bands was the fact that Queensryche was nominated for a variety of Grammy and MTV Music Awards including Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, Video of the Year, Best Group Video, and Best Direction in a Video.

In 1991, they also won an MTV Viewer's Choice Award for "Silent Lucidity".
7. Corina's fourth single release finally became her only U.S. Billboard Chart topper.

Answer: Temptation

Corina Katt Ayala is best known for her song "Temptation" that peaked at number six in 1991. It was off of her self titled debut album and was part of a genre of music known as Latin freestyle. She released several other singles that gained some success on the Hot Dance charts, but never achieved as high a success as she did with "Temptation. Carina has also had success in the acting world as well.

In 1999, Carina had an acting roll playing as the character Frida Kahlo in the historical drama film "Cradle Will Rock".
8. American jazz singer Curtis Stigers recorded this song that went to number five in the UK and to number nine in the US.

Answer: I Wonder Why

Boise, Idaho native Curtis Stigers originally moved to New York City after high school in the late 80s to pursue a career in the rock music industry, but was unsuccessful. Upon switching over to jazz music (which he was skilled in due to high school music courses), he became popular in the music industry. By 1991, Stigers had released his first solo album that went multi-platinum.

The song "I Wonder Why" peaked at number nine on the US Billboard charts and was even more successful on the UK Charts peaking at number five. Stigers also had minor hits on several soundtracks throughout the 90s including the soundtrack to "The Bodyguard" and the soundtrack to the popular television show "Dawson's Creek".
9. This Marc Cohn track has also been covered by musicians Cher and Lonestar.

Answer: Walking in Memphis

"Walking In Memphis" peaked at number thirteen on the Billboard Charts in July 1991. The lyrics to the song were thought to be about Elvis Presley, but Marc Cohn has insisted that they are not. Rather, the song is a "spiritual awakening" upon his arrival into the blues music scene. Cohn wrote the song after a trip to Memphis.

While in Memphis he toured sights such as Elvis Presley's Graceland, Highway 61, and the Hollywood Cafe. He would also listen to an Al Green sermon. All of these experiences were some of the many inspirations behind "Walking in Memphis".
10. This top ten hit was written by legendary singer-songwriter Nik Kershaw and performed by English musician Chesney Hawkes.

Answer: The One and Only

English singer-songwriter Nik Kershaw is known for many hits of the 80s that were popular on the UK Charts including "I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me", "Wouldn't It Be Good", "The Riddle", and "Wide Boy". In collaborating with Chesney Hawkes, "The One And Only" became a successful song peaking at number ten in the United States and at number one in Austria and the United Kingdom.

It has been featured in various films including the 1991 film "Buddy's Song", the 1991 film "Doc Hollywood", the 2009 film "Moon", and the 2011 film "Source Code".

It was also covered by the band Ellen and the Escapades for the 2014 film "L.A. Slasher".
