Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the working title for the album's first song?

Answer: Seventeen

Talking about "I Saw Her Standing There" of course. Opening line: "She was just seventeen..."
2. Three of the selections from the album were originally recorded by American girl groups. Which three?

Answer: Chains, Boys, Baby It's You

The Beatles recorded a total of 5 girl group songs on their first two albums. On "Please Please Me":
"Chains" by The Cookies
"Boys" and "Baby It's You" by the Shirelles.
On "With the Beatles":
"Devil in his Heart" by the Donays
"Please Mr. Postman" by the Marvelettes
3. OK, here's an obscure one: "A Taste of Honey", was the theme song for a movie based on a play. Ready? Who wrote the play?

Answer: Shelagh Delaney

Delaney peaked early. After winning several awards for "A Taste of Honey", she never really achieved that level of success again. Rita Tushingham played the lead role in the film of "A Taste of Honey"; four years later she starred in "The Knack...and How to Get It" directed by....anybody?...Richard Lester, who, of course directed "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help!" And "Superman 2". Rita T. also played Omar Sharif and Julie Christie's love child in "Dr. Zhivago".
4. What was the last song recorded for the "Please Please Me" LP?

Answer: Twist and Shout

They did only two takes of "T&S". What you hear--on one of the of the greatest performances in the history of recorded music--is the first take. God Bless the Beatles!
5. What record company in America first released an album containing the same material found on "Please Please Me"?

Answer: Vee Jay

Vee Jay was a Chicago blues label that agreed to release the Beatles music when Capitol, EMI's American subsidiary, passed on them. This album saved Vee Jay from bankruptcy--for a while.
6. "Please Please Me" was released under a different title in America . What was it?

Answer: Introducing the Beatles

The song "Please Please Me" was not a hit in America until 1964. Without name recognition, it made no sense to release the LP as "PPM".
7. What American act originally had a hit with "Twist and Shout"?

Answer: The Isley Brothers

But let's face it--the Beatles' version blew the Isley Brothers away!
8. Of the 14 songs on the album, how many were Lennon-McCartney compositions?

Answer: 8

To be specific:
"I Saw Her Standing There"
"Misery"
"Ask Me Why"
"Please Please Me"
"Love Me Do"
"P.S. I Love You"
"Do You Want to Know a Secret?"
"There's a Place"

Not bad for a pair of rookies!
9. "Misery" was originally written with what British songstress in mind?

Answer: Helen Shapiro

Helen Shapiro rejected it. But she DID record "A Teenager Sings the Blues"! What, you never heard of it? Have you been living under a rock your entire life? Geez!
10. "Do You Want to Know a Secret?" was a hit for what other Liverpool band?

Answer: Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas

BJK and the Dakotas also had a hit with Lennon & McCartney's "Bad to Me". None of the Liverpool bands--except for the Beatles, of course--had overwhelming success. RS and the Hurricanes never did get a recording contract and Rory, who was the first person to call Richard Starkey 'Ringo', died in a suicide pact with his mother. (Thought I'd end the quiz on a cheery note!)
