Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following Pennywise albums was released in 2003?

Answer: From The Ashes

"Unknown Road" was the first of the four released in 1993. Then came "Full Circle" in 1997 and then "Straight Ahead" in 1999. The last of the four was "From The Ashes" released in 2003.
2. Which band sang the words "We're gonna play, no matter what they say" on their second album, released in 1995?

Answer: Bouncing Souls

This was from the song "The Nerds, Freaks and Romantics" on the Bouncing Souls album "Maniacal Laughter". Which, incidentally, is my favourite. It also has some other awesome Souls songs like "Ballad of Johnny X", "Born to Lose" and "Lamar Vannoy".
3. What do the bands Minor Threat, The Slinkees, Egghunt, Skewbald/Grand Union, Embrace, Teen Idles, Fugazi, The Evens and Pailhead all have in common?

Answer: All involved Ian Mackaye

Ian Mackaye played in all these bands. Most notably, Minor Threat, Fugazi and Teen Idles. Some seem to think he played bass in Rites Of Spring but that is actually untrue. The Rites Of Spring bassist was called Mike Fellows. Ian played in The Slinkees when he was very young.

This was prior to him setting up Dischord Records in 1980 which still runs today. I think he played very very briefly with The Untouchables towards the end of their tenure on the DC scene but essentially, The Untouchables was Ian's brother, Alec's band. Jeff Nelson drummed for Minor Threat, The Slinkees, Egghunt, Skewbald/Grand Union and Teen Idles. Brendan Canty played drums for Fugazi, Ivor Hanson for Embrace.

The Evens was a collaboration of Ian Mackaye singing and playing baritone guitar with Amy Farina, who played with Alec Mackaye in The Warmers, on drums.

They recorded 12 songs in the summer of 2004 released in March 2005, Other than Fugazi, The Evens is Mackaye's only band to have lasted into 2005. Pailhead was just Mackaye and some guy from Ministry but they only released two singles (on Wax Trax records) anyway so it doesn't matter.
4. What was the birth name of Black Flag and Rollins Band singer, Henry Rollins?

Answer: Henry Garfield

Henry Rollins was born Henry Garfield in Washington, D.C. on February 13, 1961. He played in a number of local hardcore bands as a teenager in Washington including State Of Alert. When his idols, Black Flag came to town he jumped up on stage and sang alongside the band. Soon after, vocalist Dez Cadena moved to guitar and the band invited Garfield (or Rollins) to audition. And the rest, I guess, is history. Since Black Flag's split in 1986 Rollins has been performing spoken word tours across the globe and playing with his band, Rollins Band.
5. Between the years 1994 and 2004 inclusive, Hot Water Music released six studio albums.

Answer: False

Hot Water Music actually released 9 full length albums up to the end of 2004. One of which was a live album; "Live At The Hardback" released in 1999. One was a compilation of 3 early 7"'s ("Alachua", "Boy Out Of Bradenton", and "Pushing The Coin") and 4 splits (with "Chairmel", "Screaming Fat Rat", "Six Going On Seven", and "Tomorrow") called "Never Ender", released in 2001.

The other seven studio albums were "Finding The Rhythms" (1996), "Fuel For The Hate Game" (1997), "Forever And Counting" (1997), "No Division" (1999), "A Flight And A Crash" (2001), "Caution" (2002), and finally, "The New What Next" released on Epitaph records in 2004.
6. Complete the lyric from the Frenzal Rhomb song "Do You Wanna Fight Me?" on their 1995 album "A Man's Not A Camel": "I know you want a piece, sorry I'm so slow One more bevy I'll be ready to go And..."

Answer: Run faster than I've ever run before

Its actually "run faster than I've ever run before". Well done if you got it right. Its a good song off a good album by a good band. From Sydney, Australia. On the album they get a Japanese girl to say "Frenzal Rhomb are not a very good band" and it's really funny.
7. Usually, the singer for Dag Nasty is Dave Smalley who also sang briefly with All and a lot with Down By Law. Who was the replacement singer on Dag Nasty's second album "Wig Out At Denko's"?

Answer: Peter Cortner

Peter Cortner was hired to fill in when Dave temporarily left for Down By Law or All in 1987 following their first (and widely believed, best) album "Can I Say" which was released in March 1986 and is one of my favourite albums. Since "Wig Out at Denko's" they have released a number of records including "Four On The Floor", "Minority of One" and "Field Day".
8. On Lagwagon's left-overs and B-sides album "Lets Talk About Leftovers" they play a cover song called "Want". Which band originally played this song and which album is it off?

Answer: Jawbreaker - "Unfun"

The song was originally off the now hard to find "Unfun" LP by Jawbreaker. Lagwagon were heavily influenced and inspired by Jawbreaker. Joey Cape makes reference to them in the song "I Must Be Hateful" on their 2004 album "Blaze" when he sings "Do you remember when Jawbreaker rocked the boat". I put "Dear You" as well to confuse, there is a track on "L.A. Prison Bound" called "I Want What I Want" and 7 Seconds was just a random choice.
9. The cover band, Me First And The Gimme Gimmes consists of Fat Mike of NOFX on bass, Joey Cape of Lagwagon and Chris Shiflett of Foo Fighters on guitars and Dave Raun of Lagwagon on drums. But what is singer Spike Slawson's actual band?

Answer: Swingin' Utters

Not a lot to this question. Easy enough I guess. The other bands I chose because they all started with the letter "s". How cunning! Incidentally, Chris Shiflett's brother Scott played in the late great Face to Face who were an awesome, awesome band so you should go buy their album "How to Ruin Everything".
10. Rise Against did a cover of "Anyway You Want It" at the end of their third album.

Answer: False

Its false, Rise Against's third album is called "Siren Song For The Counter Culture" and it is probably my favourite album released in 2004. I urge you to try it. However, good as it is, it does not contain "Anyway You Want It". That was off the album previous to "Siren Song For The Counter Culture" called "Revolutions Per Minute" which was also very good. So, as you can see, I like Rise Against.
Thanks people. I hope you enjoyed my quiz.
