Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Joan Jett proclaimed "I Hate Myself for Loving You" after waiting for her lover to meet up with her. When we hear from her in the first verse, what time is it and how long has she been waiting?

Answer: 1:45 am / An hour and 45 minutes

"Midnight, gettin' uptight and where are you? You said you'd meet me, now it's quarter to two." I'd say she has good reason to be unhappy.

"I Hate Myself for Loving You" was co-written by Jett and Desmond Child. Child is a pop-rock songwriting machine! He's also written such diverse hits as "How Can We Be Lovers" for Michael Bolton, "Livin' on a Prayer" with Bon Jovi, "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" for Aerosmith and "Livin la Vida Loca" for Ricky Martin.
2. The Monkees reserved a seat for their girlfriend on the "Last Train to Clarksville." When was the young lady supposed to show up to catch her train?

Answer: 4:30 pm

"You can be there by four thirty, 'cause I've made your reservation." Very polite of them, don't you think?

"Last Train to Clarksville" uses a bright and bubbly tune to conceal some darker lyrics. The young man is singing of a last visit with his sweetheart before going off to war.
3. At what time did the gentlemen from the band Chicago find themselves suffering from insomnia and sitting on the floor?

Answer: 3:35 am

The meaning of "25 or 6 to 4" is generally taken at face value as a time of night, but some people consider it to have a more complex meaning. Songwriter Robert Lamm has gone back and forth in interviews between implying mystical significance in the song and stating that it's just a time and no more.
4. What time did Sheryl Crow find herself at a bar in "All I Wanna Do is Have Some Fun"?

Answer: Noon

"We are drinking beer at noon on Tuesday in a bar that faces a giant car wash." The song was adapted from a poem called "Fun" by Wyn Cooper.
5. In Garth Brooks' smash hit "The Thunder Rolls", at what time is the wayward husband driving home?

Answer: 3:30 am

"Three-thirty in the morning, not a soul in sight
The city's looking like a ghost town on a moonless summer night."
Country artist Garth Brooks is the best selling solo artist in the United States. "The Thunder Rolls" is one of his trademark songs, although it was originally recorded by Tanya Tucker.
6. What time does Elton John get his evening started in "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting?"

Answer: 7:00 pm

"It's seven o'clock and I wanna rock, wanna get a belly full of beer."
Prior to the 1973 release of the single "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting," Elton John had been best known for a softer sound. The song was a sudden departure from the prior string of ballads and easy tunes.
7. Don Henley sang to us about the "New York Minute," but it was Huey Lewis and the News who assigned it to a specific moment of the day in "The Heart of Rock and Roll". What time did Huey mention?

Answer: 2:45

"Where else can you do a half a million things all in a quarter to three?"
The song "Heart of Rock and Roll" name-checks 14 different US cities, starting with New York in the first verse and ending with Detroit in the outro.
8. When do the patrons arrive at the bar to listen to Billy Joel in "Piano Man?"

Answer: 9:00 pm

"It's nine o'clock on a Saturday. The regular crowd shuffles in."
Billy Joel referred back to his experience releasing the single "Piano Man" in his later song "The Entertainer." The original recording ran for 5:38, but the record execs chopped it down to fit on one side of a 45 rpm single.
9. What time did Fido get booted out his doghouse by Hank Williams in "Move it On Over?"

Answer: 10:30 pm

"I got in last night about half past ten, that baby of mine won't let me in."
Modern rock fans will probably be more familiar with the cover of "Move It On Over" performed by George Thorogood & the Destroyers in the mid-1970s. The original was performed by Hank Williams and went to number four on the Billboard country charts in 1947.
10. Little Susie promised her mother she'd be home by 10pm. Unfortunately she fell asleep while watching a movie with her boyfriend. When did her boyfriend panic and wake her up?

Answer: 4:00 am

"We've both been sound asleep. Wake up, little Susie and weep. The movie's over, it's four o'clock and we're in trouble deep."
George W. Bush erred on "Oprah" and stated that this song was done by Buddy Holly. It was originally written by Felice & Boudreaux Bryant. The Everly Brothers took it to number on the Billboard Pop Singles charts in 1957.
11. Going back in time a bit for a jazz standard. When does the "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" depart from track #29?

Answer: 3:45 pm

"You leave the Pennsylvania Station 'bout a quarter to four. Read a magazine and then you're in Baltimore! Dinner in the diner, nothing could be finer than to have your ham and eggs in Carolina."

Jazz artist Glenn Miller recorded "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" in 1941. It has the distinct honor of being the first single in recording history to be given "Gold Record" status, selling 1,200,000 copies by February of 1942. It was the number one single in the United States when the Japanese attacked the US at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
12. What time does the young runaway sneak out the door according to the Beatles in "She's Leaving Home?"

Answer: Wednesday, 5:00 am

"Wednesday morning at five o'clock as the day begins
Silently closing her bedroom door..."
The poignant song "She's Leaving Home" was written by Paul McCartney based on a newspaper article. The young lady in question was Melanie Coe, found ten days after she ran away with her boyfriend. She has said that McCartney got most of the story right, even though he made most of it up before ever speaking to her.
13. Individuals are advised to be on the alert this evening at 10:30pm. Weather forecasts show high humidity and a low pressure system moving in. We are predicting a once-in-a-lifetime storm, with precipitation in a very unique form. What will be falling from the skies?

Answer: Men

"Because tonight for the first time, just about half past ten, for the first time in history it's gonna start raining men!"

Zaftig divas Martha Wash and Izora Armstead were the Weather Girls, who alerted us to the crazy weather patterns heading our way in "It's Raining Men." They met working as backup singers for disco artist Sylvester, and originally billed themselves as "Two Tons o'Fun."
14. Here's one for the real hard core listeners among you. What is the only time mentioned in the lyrical mass of "It's the End of the World as We Know It" by REM?

Answer: 6:00

"Six o'clock TV hour, don't get caught in foreign towers, slash and burn, return, listen to yourself churn."
The song "It's The End of The World As We Know It (and I Feel Fine)" is one of REM's earlier singles, dating back to 1987. It was partly inspired by a dream of Michael Stipe's, wherein he was at a party in the company of multiple people with the initials "L.B."
15. A group of gentlemen (or are they ladies?) from Canada opted to drive downtown one rainy night to visit a music store. What day and time did they hit the road?

Answer: 9:30 pm on Tuesday

"Drove downtown in the rain, 9:30 on a Tuesday night, just to check out the late night record shop."

The Barenaked Ladies' song "Brian Wilson" was actually covered by Brian Wilson himself on his live DVD "Live at the Roxy." Call me impulsive, compulsive or insane, but it's also the song that inspired me to write this quiz.
