Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Number 21: 1980s, though the greatest hits on this album are from the 1950s and 1960s. The number 21 album is entitled "The Great Twenty-Eight". A few songs on this album are "Maybelline", "Sweet Little Sixteen", and "Reelin' and Rockin'". Name the rock and roller who performed these songs.

Answer: Chuck Berry

The album was released in 1982 and features Berry's years with Chess Records from 1955-1965. So any songs after that, like his biggest hit "My Ding-a-ling", are not included on the album.

There are many compilation albums on Rolling Stone's 500 list in 2003, but this one is the second highest. Only Elvis Presley's "Sun Sessions", at number 11, is ranked higher.
2. Number 22: 1990s, though the songs are from the 1930s. The album "The Complete Recordings" are from a legendary blues performer. Two songs off this album are "Cross Road Blues" and "Kind Hearted Woman Blues". Who's the bluesman at number 22 on the list?

Answer: Robert Johnson

This compilation album was released in August 1990. It covers remastered songs he recorded in 1936 and 1937, his only two years he recorded on vinyl, mostly 78 R.P.M.S at that, before his death in 1938. It won the Grammy Award in 1991 for "Best Historical Album".

Johnson is one of the most influential artist of all-time. He's influenced artists and bands such as Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, and even early Fleetwood Mac.

He's a strong influence on Bob Dylan, whose "Highway 61 Revisited" is partially a nod to Johnson. Eric Clapton with the band Cream played "Crossroads" on the "Wheels of Fire" album as an homage to him.

Because there is so much mythology surrounding Johnson, from the legend of him selling his soul to how he died, this led to a great quote by director Martin Scorsese: "The thing about Robert Johnson was that he only existed on his records. He was pure legend".
3. Number 23: 1970s. The album at number 23 is called "Plastic Ono Band". A couple songs off this album are "Mother" and "God". Which former Beatle wrote and recorded this album?

Answer: John Lennon

Ironically, John's wife Yoko had also come out with an album of the same name around the same time. It is usually called "Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band".

The album was influenced by Lennon's sessions with Primal Therapy founder Arthur Janov.

An interesting side note, Ringo Starr played drums on the album. It was released in December 1970.
4. Number 24: 1970s. This album is called "Innervisions" by a great R&B Motown star. Some of the songs on the album are "Living for the City" and "Higher Ground". Who wrote and performed this album?

Answer: Stevie Wonder

The album was released in 1973 on Motown subsidiary Tamla records. Wonder played all the instruments on seven of the albums tracks. The album peaked at number four in the USA on the Billboard Album Charts.

The album won Grammys for "Album of the Year" and "Best R&B Song" for the single "Livin' for the City".
5. Number 25: 1960s. The next album on the list is "Live at the Apollo". When listening to this album by the "King of Soul", I feel good! A couple songs are "I'll Go Crazy" and "Night Train". With his group the Famous Flames, who performed this album?

Answer: James Brown

The album was released in 1963. It was recorded at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York on the night of October 24, 1962. In the USA, it spent 66 weeks on the Billboard Album chart, peaking at number two.

The album was released as a compact disc in 1990. The reason it took so long to release a CD version was the master tapes had been misplaced.
6. Number 26: 1970s. "Rumours" is the album next on Rolling Stones' list. Among the songs on the album are "Go Your Own Way" and "Don't Stop". Which British/American group recorded this mega hit?

Answer: Fleetwood Mac

The album was recorded mainly in California, Sausalito and Los Angeles. It was released in February 1977 and went to number one on the UK Album charts and on the Billboard Album chart in the USA. It is one of the top selling albums of all-time, about 45 million copies worldwide so far.

Many artists have mentioned it as an influence, from Elton John and Jewel, to the Goo Goo Dolls and Death Cab for Cutie.

An interesting side note: one of the producers of the album was Ken Caillat, father to current recording star Colbie Caillat. He produces her albums too.
7. Number 27: 1980s. This album is entitled "The Joshua Tree". A few songs on this album include "Where the Streets Have No Name" and "With or Without You". Name the band that recorded this album.

Answer: U2

This album reached number one on the album charts in 20 countries, including the USA and the UK. It has sold about 25 million copies worldwide. It also won the Grammy for "Album of the Year" in 1988. It was released in March 1987.

Rolling Stone magazine had this to say about the album: "An album that turns spiritual quests and political struggles into uplifting stadium sing-alongs".
8. Number 28: 1970s. The next album is called "Who's Next". A few songs on the album are "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again". Which classic rock group from the UK recorded this album?

Answer: The Who

The album was released in August 1971. Most of the songs on the album were taken from Pete Townsend's attempt to write a follow-up to the Rock Opera "Tommy". It was to be called "Lifehouse". The iconic album cover was a shot at Stanley Kubrick and his movie "2001: A Space Odyssey". Kubrick had turned down the opportunity to direct "Tommy", so the band were urinating on a monolith to show how they felt. Interestingly, the band couldn't urinate so rainwater poured from a film canister did the trick!

The album peaked at number one on the UK Album chart and in the USA number four on the Billboard Album chart.
9. Number 29: 1960s. The next album and the group who recorded it have the same name. It is the first album by a hard rock/blues group from England. A sampling of songs off the album include "Dazed and Confused", "Communication Breakdown", and "Good Times Bad Times". Name the group and album.

Answer: Led Zeppelin

The album was released in January 1969. It was recorded at Olympic Studios in London. It took only 36 hours to record the album! According to singer Robert Plant, it was because they had honed the songs on a Scandinavian tour before entering the studios.

This blues/rock/metal fusion was not initially a critical success, but it was a big commercial success. It spent an amazing 73 consecutive weeks on the Billboard Album charts in the USA, peaking at number 10. It did even better in the UK, spending 79 consecutive weeks on the album charts, peaking at number six.
10. Number 30: 1970s. This album is entitled "Blue". It was performed by a Canadian folk rock singer. A few songs include "All I Want" and "Carey". Not sure if she took a big yellow taxi to the studios, but who wrote and recorded this album?

Answer: Joni Mitchell

The album was released in June 1971. The album peaked at number 15 on the Billboard Album chart and number three on the UK Album chart. Both Stephen Stills and James Taylor played on the album. Most of the songs were written with her romances with Graham Nash and James Taylor in mind.

In January 2000, The New York Times gave nice praise to the album, saying it was one of 25 albums that represented "turning points and pinnacles 20th-century popular music".
