Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Number 11: "The Sun Sessions". While the songs on this album were recorded in the 1950s, it was actually released in the 1970s. A few songs off it are "That's All Right (Mama)" and "Baby Let's Play House". Which hip shaking artist recorded the songs on this album?

Answer: Elvis Presley

Elvis recorded the songs on the album in 1954 and 1955, though the album was actually released in 1976. Some of the songs had been previously released as singles only, such as the ones in the question text. Allmusic stated this about the album: "It collects his first, and arguably his most important, recordings into one convenient package. Who doesn't need this in their record collection?" A great quote!

Johnny Bravo is a Cartoon Network character who talks like Elvis but certainly doesn't act like him.

On Rolling Stone's updated 2012 list, this album was taken off the list completely and replaced by Elvis' album "Sunrise". Very interesting!
2. Number 12: 1950s, "Kind of Blue". A few songs from the album are "So What" and "Blue in Green". Name the late jazz trumpeter and composer who made this album.

Answer: Miles Davis

Some critics have called this the greatest jazz album of all-time. It was recorded in New York City at Columbia Records 30th Street Studio in 1959. Davis died in September 1991 in Santa Monica, California. I had the privilege of seeing his last concert (though at the time we didn't know it'd be his last) at the Hollywood Bowl the week before he passed. I wish I'd saved the ticket stub.
3. Number 13: 1960s, "The Velvet Underground and Nico". If the title doesn't give it away, then some tracks are "Sunday Morning" and "Heroin". Name the group who recorded this album?

Answer: The Velvet Underground

The Velvet Underground was led by the late Lou Reed. Nico was a female German singer who contributed vocals for the album. Andy Warhol bankrolled the album and is given credit as the producer, though he wasn't involved directly with the music. He did design the banana on the cover. On the first records pressed, the banana was a sticker. If you peeled the sticker, it had a "flesh colored" banana underneath.

The album was very controversial at the time, dealing with topics from deviant sex to drugs.
4. Number 14: 1970s, "Abbey Road". A couple songs on the album are "Come Together" and "Here Comes the Sun". Which "fab" group did this album?

Answer: The Beatles

"Abbey Road" is the top selling Beatles album of all-time. It was actually the last one recorded by the group, though "Let It Be" was the last Beatles' album released while they were sort of together. It was a huge commercial hit, spending multiple weeks at number one on both the UK Album Chart and the Billboard album charts in the USA.
5. Number 15: 1960s, "Are You Experienced?". Included on the album are "Purple Haze" and "Hey Joe". Which group fronted by a guitar legend made this album?

Answer: The Jimi Hendrix Experience

This debut album from the group was recorded in England in 1967. In the UK, the album reached number two, stalling behind the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper" album. In the USA, the album tracks were rearranged and a few songs added. It peaked at number five on the Billboard album chart and spent an amazing 106 consecutive weeks on the chart in the USA.

The other members of the band were bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell.
6. Number 16: 1970s, "Blood on the Tracks". The hit single from the album is "Tangled Up in Blue". Which legendary artist recorded this album?

Answer: Bob Dylan

The album was released in January 1975. It peaked at number one in the USA on the Billboard 100 album chart and number four on the UK Album Chart. According to Jakob Dylan, member of the Wallflowers and Bob's son, "The songs are my parents talking".
7. Number 17: 1990s, "Nevermind". Some songs off the album are "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "In Bloom". Name this Aberdeen, Washington band.

Answer: Nirvana

The album was released in the USA in September 1991 without much promotion. Word of mouth and the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video on MTV helped it reach number one in the USA replacing Michael Jackson's "Dangerous" album.

Kurt Cobain originally wanted to call the album "Sheep", but changed the title to "Nevermind". He said it was a metaphor for his life, and he liked that it was grammatically incorrect. Tragically, Cobain killed himself in April 1994. The band was founded by Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic. They had several drummers before Dave Grohl stayed with the group from 1990 to Cobain's passing.
The group will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.
8. Number 18: 1970s, "Born to Run". Besides the title song, another track is "Thunder Road". Which American artist made this album?

Answer: Bruce Springsteen

It was released in August 1975. Because of the "buzz" surrounding the album and Springsteen, he was featured on the covers of "Time" and "Newsweek" magazines at the same time. That was the week of October 27, 1975. It was unprecedented for a rock star to be featured on the cover of two of the USA's most prestigious magazines during the same week.

Despite the hype, the album peaked at number three in the USA Billboard album charts and only 36 on the UK album charts.
9. Number 19: 1960s, "Astral Weeks". Besides the title song, another song from the album is "Madame George". Which Northern Irish artist did this album?

Answer: Van Morrison

This was Morrison's second solo album. It was recorded in New York City. The album has been described as "poetic" and " a stream of consciousness". One critic even mentioned that if you're feeling down, listen to this album. It has been cited as an influence by many music artists, including Bono and Bruce Springsteen.

Despite the critical success, the album didn't have much commercial success. It was finally certified gold in 2001.
10. Number 20: 1980s, "Thriller". A few songs from it are "Billie Jean" and "Beat It". Name the late "King of Pop" that recorded this huge hit.

Answer: Michael Jackson

"Thriller" is the number one selling album of all-time, with an estimated 47-51 million copies world-wide. In the USA, it is tied with the Eagles' "Their Greatest Hits: 1971-1975" album with an estimated 29 million copies sold. It was the first ever album to produce seven top-ten hits.

The album won a record eight Grammys in 1984. It was the number one album of the year in the UK in 1983, and number one in both 1983 and 1984 in the USA.
