Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which seminal progressive rock band recorded a very distinctive cover of Simon and Garfunkel's "America" in 1971?

Answer: Yes

Originally featured on Simon and Garfunkel's fourth album, "Bookends" (1968), "America" was inspired by a road trip Paul Simon took in 1964 with his then-girlfriend, Kathy Chitty. In 1970 the song got the full-blown prog treatment by Yes (the studio version clocked in at over 10 minutes, while live versions reached 15 minutes), though at first it only appeared on various compilations. Now "America" can be found as a bonus track on the 2003 reissue of Yes' 1971 album "Fragile".
2. One of the Seventies' greatest funk songs, "Higher Ground" was covered by the Red Hot Chili Peppers on their fourth studio album, "Mother's Milk" (1989). Who recorded the original version of the song?

Answer: Stevie Wonder

"Higher Ground", a song about reincarnation, appeared on Stevie Wonder's 1973 album "Innervisions", and as a single reached Number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is also listed as one of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time (at Number 265) by Rolling Stone magazine.

In my view, the Red Hot Chili Peppers cover of this song is one of those rare cases when the cover is as good as the original.
3. Which of these famous songs of the late Sixties has been often covered by Blue Oyster Cult during their live shows?

Answer: Born to Be Wild

Still active 43 years after they first got together, NYC band Blue Oyster Cult have often performed songs by other artists. A cover of Steppenwolf's 1968 hit "Born to Be Wild" appears on their live album "On Your Feet or On Your Knees" (1975). BOC (as they are known to their fans) also recorded live versions of The Doors' "Roadhouse Blues", MC5's "Kick Out the Jams", and The Animals' "We Gotta Get Out of This Place".
4. "River Deep Mountain High", one of the best-known songs by Ike and Tina Turner, has been covered by several other artists. Which of the following artists did NOT record a cover of this song?

Answer: Fleetwood Mac

Written by Phil Spector, Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry, "River Deep Mountain High" was released in 1966, and was only moderately successful at the time. Deep Purple included a 10-minute version of it on their second album, "The Book of Taliesyn" (1968). The Four Tops version dates from 1970, and the one by Celine Dion from 1996.
5. The CD edition of Faith No More's 1989 album "The Real Thing" features a cover of which iconic Black Sabbath song?

Answer: War Pigs

The first Faith No More album with charismatic vocalist Mike Patton, "The Real Thing", was one of the band's most successful releases. Their cover of "War Pigs", in my opinion, is one of the best covers ever recorded. The original version of this strongly anti-war song appears on Black Sabbath's second album, "Paranoid" (1970).
6. In January 1979, The Pretenders released their first single, "Stop Your Sobbing" - a cover of a song by which iconic English band of the Sixties?

Answer: The Kinks

"Stop Your Sobbing" originally appeared on The Kinks' self-titled debut album, released in 1963. When The Pretenders recorded their cover (later included on their self-titled debut), a relationship was born between The Kinks' Ray Davies and Pretenders' frontwoman Chrissie Hynde (who, unlike the rest of the band, is American). Davies and Hynde had a daughter in 1983, but split up some time later.
7. Which classic heavy metal band included a cover of Joan Baez's "Diamonds and Rust" on their third studio album?

Answer: Judas Priest

Joan Baez wrote "Diamonds and Rust" in 1974, and Judas Priest recorded their cover (which has long been a staple of their live show) in 1977. The song appeared on the band's third album, "Sin After Sin", and was also released as a single. Baez was very appreciative of the cover.
8. Which powerful-voiced singer, who once compared love to a battlefield, recorded a cover of Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights"?

Answer: Pat Benatar

Pat Benatar initially trained as an opera singer, but later turned to a career in rock, and enjoyed widespread success in the Eighties. Her cover of "Wuthering Heights" appears on her second studio album, "Crimes of Passion", released in 1980. The original version of the song, written by Kate Bush at the age of 18, was inspired by Emily Bronte's iconic novel.

It marked the English singer-songwriter's recording debut in 1978, and is still her most successful single to date.
9. In 1973, David Bowie (who sadly left us in the early days of 2016) released an album of covers by the title of "Pin Ups". Which haunting Pink Floyd song was included on the album?

Answer: See Emily Play

"Pin Ups" featured covers of songs by Sixties bands such as The Who, The Kinks and The Yardbirds. The cover shows Bowie with famed Sixties supermodel Twiggy. "See Emily Play", written by Syd Barrett, was originally released as a single in June 1967, and a few months later appeared on the American edition of Pink Floyd's debut album, "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn". "Astronomy Domine" is also included on that album, while "Echoes" appears on "Meddle" (1971) and "Us and Them" on "Dark Side of the Moon" (1973).
10. One of great jazz saxophonist and composer John Coltrane's signature pieces was his 14-minute version of "My Favorite Things", possibly the most popular song from which beloved musical?

Answer: The Sound of Music

Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1959 musical "The Sound of Music" (later made into a very successful film) was based on the memoirs of Baroness Maria Von Trapp. The song "My Favorite Things", with its winter imagery, has appeared on many artists' Christmas albums. Coltrane's free-jazz version of the song, originally included on his 1961 album of the same title, quickly became a concert classic, as witnessed by its many live versions.
