Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The song that lends its title to this quiz is one of Duran Duran's signature tunes. On which of their albums did it appear?

Answer: Rio

With its catchy chorus and stylish video - filmed in the Sri Lankan jungle by director Russell Mulcahy - "Hungry Like the Wolf" was definitely one of the biggest hits of the Eighties, and one of Duran Duran's best-known songs. It was released as a single in May 1982, a few days before the release of "Rio", the band's second studio album. "Duran Duran" was the band's debut album, "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" their third, and "Notorious" their fourth.
2. Released as a single by Pink Floyd in 1982, "When The Tigers Broke Free" commemorates the death of which band member's father?

Answer: Roger Waters

"When the Tigers Broke Free" describes the circumstances in which Roger Waters' father, Eric, died during the Battle of Anzio in 1944. The Tigers in the title are German tanks, which broke through the British defence, killing all the members of the company in which Eric Waters served.

The song was originally written in 1979, at the same time as the other songs on "The Wall", but it was not included in that album because the other band members thought it was too personal. It was subsequently featured in Alan Parker's film version of "The Wall" (1982), and in the 2004 CD reissue of "The Final Cut", the last album recorded by Waters with Pink Floyd.
3. What fearsome oceanic fish, notorious for its sharp teeth, did Heart sing about in 1977?

Answer: barracuda

Released as single from Heart's second album, "Little Queen" (1977), "Barracuda" was one of the band's first experiments with heavy rock. It became their second top 20 hit, and has been covered by many artists.

While they have very sharp teeth, and can be quite dangerous to encounter in the water, piranhas are a freshwater species.
4. "The Lion and the Cobra" was the debut album for this Irish singer, known for her troubled personal life as well as her lovely voice.

Answer: Sinéad O'Connor

"The Lion and the Cobra" was released in 1987, when Sinéad O'Connor was 20 years old. The title comes from a verse in Psalm 91. O'Connor gained some notoriety in 1992, when she ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II during an episode of "Saturday Night Live".

Dolores O'Riordan, the lead singer of The Cranberries, and Enya, a successful solo artist, are also Irish, while Loreena McKennitt is a Canadian of Scottish descent.
5. Released in 1969, and written by legendary guitarist Peter Green, "Rattlesnake Shake" was one of the best early songs by Fleetwood Mac. Twenty years later, a song by the same title appeared on "Dr. Feelgood", the fifth studio album of which rather different band?

Answer: Mötley Crüe

Fleetwood Mac started their long career in the late Sixties as a British blues-rock band. Ten years later, they released "Rumours", one of the most successful albums in the history of rock. Mötley Crüe, on the other hand, hail from the Los Angeles metro area, and were one of the standard-bearers of glam metal in the Eighties (like Poison, Ratt and Cinderella). "Dr Feelgood", released in 1989 and produced by Bob Rock (who also produced Metallica's famous "Black Album"), reflects the band's attempts at rehabilitation from alcohol and drug addiction.
6. Which influential English post-punk band released an album by the title of "Hyaena" in 1984?

Answer: Siouxsie and the Banshees

"Hyaena" was the sixth studio album by Siouxsie and the Banshees, and the first to be released on a major label, Geffen Records. Its US version featured a cover of The Beatles' "Dear Prudence". "Hyaena" is also the only album by the band to feature Robert Smith of The Cure as a full-fledged member.
7. What is the title of the Fifties-inspired song about a toothy reptile released by Elton John in 1972?

Answer: Crocodile Rock

Written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, "Crocodile Rock" was released as a single in October 1972, and was later featured on the album "Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player". The song was a major hit, reaching number one of the US charts in February 1973.
8. "Where Eagles Dare" is the title of a British WWII film, and also of a song appearing on the fourth studio album of which iconic heavy metal band?

Answer: Iron Maiden

The song "Where Eagles Dare" was inspired by the 1968 film based on a novel by Alistair MacLean, and starring Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. It is the opening track of "Piece of Mind" (1983), Iron Maiden's first album with drummer Nicko McBrain, who has been a member of the band ever since.
9. "Canis latrans" would be a good alternative title for this 1976 song by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell.

Answer: Coyote

Also released as a single, "Coyote" is the opening song of Joni Mitchell's eighth studio album, "Hejira". The album, widely considered as one of her masterpieces, saw the beginning of Mitchell's collaboration with renowned jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius.
10. In the early Eighties, "Shooting Shark" was a radio and video hit for which great American hard rock band?

Answer: Blue Oyster Cult

Written by punk icon Patti Smith and guitarist Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser, "Shooting Shark" appeared on Blue Oyster Cult's ninth studio album, "The Revolution By Night". Randy Jackson (of "American Idol" fame) plays bass on this song.
