Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1967, Tom was part of a group called The Epics. On their business card, in addition to the band's name, there was a motto. What was it?

Answer: ...for love or money

This is a tough one! You can find a photocopy of their business card (with this clearly displayed motto) in the biography.
2. Time passes, and The Epics disband because of the desire to do more original material and because it's 1967; they feel the name sounds dated. Tom Petty and Tom Leadon bring in Randall Marsh on drums, Mike Campbell on guitar and Benmont Tench on keyboards. What is the group then called? (the precursor to The Heartbreakers)

Answer: Mudcrutch

Tom Petty invited Randall Marsh and Tom Leadon, the original members of Mudcrutch who didn't become "Heartbreakers", to reunite with the group and reform Mudcrutch. They released a self-titled album in 2008.

Grunttruck is a group from NW Washington from the "Grunge" era. The rest are made up.
3. Tom's initial record deal was not the best for him - he had signed away the copyright to his songs. When he found this out, What did he and the band do?

Answer: Refused to deliver the album "Damn the Torpedoes"

Tom stood his ground, despite pressure from the record company. He filed for bankruptcy and he had Elliot Roberts pay for the attorneys and the recording. Eventually the matter was settled out of court, MCA helped Petty start Backstreet Records, and "Damn the Torpedoes" was released.
4. Tom Petty was in the middle of recording the album "Hard Promises", and walked into a record store. He saw a sign that made him so mad, he called the record company, and threatened drastic action. What did the sign show that made Tom so mad?

Answer: The price for the future LP - $9.98

The record company, knowing that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were bankable artists, raised the price of the LP...Tom took a stand and again the record company backed down.
5. Let's get visual now...on the video for "Into The Great Wide Open", a famous actor portrays the subject of the song "Eddie" in the video. Who is it?

Answer: Johnny Depp

Also in the video -- look and you'll see Faye Dunaway as well.
6. For the video "Mary Jane's Last Dance", Tom is the creepy morgue assistant who takes a deceased woman for a date. Who is the lady?

Answer: Kim Basinger

In the last scene of the video, Tom carries Kim to a cave and then places her in the water. The cave is located at Leo Carrillo State Park, in Malibu, California.
7. When Tom Petty used Jeff Lynne as producer for his next project, they produced in 1988 "Full Moon Fever". What was the original title supposed to be?

Answer: Songs From The Garage

Tom never intended it to seem with this album that he was finished with The Heartbreakers, but in 1988 there was definitely that feeling back then with the public and The Heartbreakers themselves.
8. In August 1986, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers shared the bill with a famous man who would eventually join Tom as a Travelling Wilbury. Who was this man?

Answer: Bob Dylan

Tom said it rejuvenated the entire band because Bob's approach was very free-form, with Bob changing the beat, the key, etc. of any given song.

I saw them on August 1st, 1986 in BC Place Stadium, in Vancouver, B.C. Canada, but the tour covered most of the west coast of North America. For the set list, see http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/bob-dylan-and-tom-petty/1986/bc-place-stadium-vancouver-bc-canada-2bd7588a.html
9. Tom Petty, on a side project, became a Travelling Wilbury... On the debut album, "Volume 1", which "Wilbury" was Tom?

Answer: Charlie T. Wilbury, Jr.

On "Volume 1" the full lineup as per the liner notes(ghost-written by Python Michael Palin, no less) is as follows:

"Nelson Wilbury" - George Harrison
"Otis Wilbury" - Jeff Lynne
"Lefty Wilbury" - Roy Orbison

"Lucky Wilbury" - Bob Dylan

For "Volume 3", they were renamed to:
