Thomas Earl Petty was the oldest of two sons born to Earl and Kitty (maiden name Avery). His younger brother was Bruce. He grew up in the Gainesville, Florida area.

Answer: Elvis Presley

He met "The King" because his uncle was working on the set of an Elvis movie that was being shot near Ocala, FL. His uncle invited Tom to come and watch the shoot and while there met Elvis. The movie was "Follow That Dream".
Meeting Elvis sparked his musical interest but Petty said that seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan's show really fueled his desire to be in a band.
