Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Billy Joel song "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" was originally released on which studio album?

Answer: Turnstiles

"Turnstiles" was the follow-up album to "Streetlife Serenade," and preceded the multi-platinum album "The Stranger."
2. In what year was the album released that contained the studio version of the Billy Joel song "Say Goodbye to Hollywood"?

Answer: 1976

Joel recorded the album "Turnstiles" after returning to New York from California. In the "Songs in the Attic" liner notes, Joel says "I wasn't glad to leave, just anxious to return home."
3. What was the top U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart position reached by the studio version of Billy Joel's song "Say Goodbye to Hollywood?"

Answer: Did not make the Hot 100

At the time the song was released, Billy's highest charting song on the Hot 100 had been 1973's "Piano Man" (25). He later had number one hits with "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me" (1980), "Tell Her About It" (1983) and "We Didn't Start the Fire" (1989).
4. Billy Joel released a live version of "Say Goodbye to Hollywood." On what album did the live version first appear?

Answer: Songs in the Attic

According to the liner notes written by Joel, "Songs in the Attic" contained live versions of a selection of older songs "closer to the sound I had originally intended to capture."
5. What was the release date of the first album containing the live version of Billy Joel's "Say Goodbye to Hollywood?"

Answer: 1981

The song was recorded in June 1980 at the Milwaukee Arena in Milwaukee, WI. In the album liner notes, Joel says the song "was sort of a Phil Spector bon voyage bash to celebrate the good times."
6. What was the top U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart position reached by the live version of Billy Joel's song "Say Goodbye to Hollywood"?

Answer: 17

The live song charted much better than the original. At number 17, the song tied the top chart position of other Joel hits: "Movin' Out," "She's Always a Woman" and "Allentown."
7. According to the Billy Joel song "Say Goodbye to Hollywood," Bobby is driving his rent-a-car to a scene on which Boulevard?

Answer: Sunset

The other Boulevards are from the lyrics of "I Love L.A." by Randy Newman
8. From the singer's perspective in the Billy Joel song "Say Goodbye to Hollywood," Johnny no longer serves in what role?

Answer: fast gun

I'm not sure what the term "fast gun" refers to in the song, but there is a product called FastGun for sale on the Internet that is a Quick Lever Action Springload Turnbuckle for campers. Probably not what Joel was referring to.
9. Who performs the saxophone solo in both versions of Billy Joel's song "Say Goodbye to Hollywood"?

Answer: Richie Cannata

The others also play instruments in the band: Drums (DeVitto), bass (Stegmeyer) and guitar (Javors). Cannata left the band in 1981 and opened a sound studio on Long Island. He played with the Beach Boys in the 1990s and rejoined Joel for the concerts at Madison Square Garden that were recorded for the album "12 Gardens Live."
10. Which artist had a 2002 release entitled "Say Goodbye to Hollywood," which bears no resemblance to the Billy Joel song first released in the 1970's?

Answer: Eminem

Released on the album "The Eminem Show." "Without Me", another track from that album, was nominated for a Record of the Year Grammy, but lost to Jones' "Don't Know Why." "Without Me" was also nominated for Best Male Rap Solo Performance, but lost to Nelly for "Hot in Herre."
